Assignment 4.1
Review what your role, responsibilities and boundaries would be as a teacher in terms of the teaching/training cycle.
Working as an IT Trainer within an NHS organisation is similar to working in a further education environment. Course delivery and preparation is very similar to that of main stream teaching. My role is governed by local and national role based responsibilities, encompassing many different aspects such as Health & Safety of my learners through to the structured delivery and assessment of the material delivered on the courses I am responsible for.
The national framework that all NSH Learning & Development is based upon is known as the “Education, Training and Development” (ETD) standards and they are laid out over eight ETD Standards. The eight standards are encompassed in the Training Lifecycle as shown in the diagram below:
NHS – ETD Standards Lifecycle
NHS Connecting for Health Website
http://www.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/systemsandservices/etd/standards
We do use local variations to the national Connecting for Health standards to help us design and deliver courses to our Trust and PCT colleagues. However all our material is prepared, designed, and delivered strictly to comply with the ETD Standards.
This includes the layout of all documentation, handouts and workbooks and also all of our course files that contain all of our lesson plans, course outline, delivery schedule and sign off forms from our customers approving our courses before they are finally delivered to the learner.
The eight standards that cover the preparation/design, facilitation/delivery, and assessment of all NHS learning and development across all disciplines include:
* ETD standard one: training strategy
* ETD standard two: training plan
* ETD standard three: training needs analysis
* ETD standard four: training service administration
* ETD standard five: materials design & development
* ETD standard six: evaluation and assessment
* ETD standard seven: trainer
* ETD standard eight: training facilities
ETD standards have been in place within our organisation for many years, and as mentioned above we have brought all of our local procedures and the formatting of our documents, lesson plans and teaching aids into line with ETD standards.
My specific role as a trainer is to ensure that the learner is able to achieve the objective by the end of the training session. I have a responsibility to adapt my training to suit all the learners differing learning styles. In an average group of eight learners there will be a broad spectrum of learners from Kinaesthetic to Aural and Visual. Lesson delivery is structured and where a learner may be suffering, we utilise the “buddy” system pairing up learners, one learner that is striving ahead and understands the subject well, with another learner who may be struggling by using this direct peer support method enables the lesson to be delivered within the time frame and ensures that all the learners have understood the subject and have achieved the learning objective.
Within my role there are a certain amount of boundaries, these are put in place by the trust our parent organisation, and also we have local boundaries laid down as working practices and guidelines within the IT Training department. General boundaries include treating the learners with the upmost respect, however learners who choose not to participate fully in the lesson will be asked to actively take part or to leave the session and will be reported to their line manager. This is similar to how students and learners are supported in the FE environment. Students not wishing to actively take part would be asked to leave the lesson so as not to impede upon the learning experience of the other students.
In summary the roles and responsibilities of an IT Trainer are wide and varied, with regard to the Health and Safety of the learners this includes the learning environment, heating, lighting, ventilation, trailing cables etc. Ensuring that the training room is both clean and tidy is the first responsibility also highlighting any repairs or maintenance issues to the estates department as soon as possible so as to not cause the training rooms to be out of action for any reason.
Other health and safety issues include the DSE (display screen equipment) checklists to ensure that all of the IT equipment being used for training is in full working order, and that the desks used in the training room are at an appropriate height and that the chairs are height adjustable and are in full working order.
These are all additional responsibilities in addition to those already outlined above regarding the ETD standards of training delivery.
Day to day training delivery encompasses all of the above, and it is the responsibility of all members of the IT Training team to comply with all the roles and responsibilities expected of them including the reporting of any incidents, and the accurate record keeping of all the training delivered and the feedback evaluation sheets completed by the learners.
I enjoy my role as an IT Trainer although I am new to the role, I am still understanding all of my roles and responsibilities and of course I am still finding my feet. However I am a conscientious individual who understands that I am responsible for the effective learning of those learners who attend my training courses. Achieving the learning objectives is the primary aim and understanding and implementing all of the ETD standards is not only my job but my main role and responsibility.
