Psychology and Health 2 Summarizing the Multi-factorial approach to health. To sum up the Multi-factorial model to health approach method, or M model, one can say that it is a health holistic approach to individuals and their health care and health care concerns and needs. For example; the case of a patient suffering from serious and long-term migraine headaches. Such health problems were discussed in the text. What the Multi-factorial approach to health will do in such cases will be to, first, approach the problem with the belief that the patient’s good health is a function of multiple different factors working simultaneously in the life of the patient. In the case of such a patient, an example of one M model approach could include the following: • Preventive therapy sessions • Managing migraine triggers • Aborting migraine attacks • Pain management Consequently then, the M model practitioner will take into account the patients biological details such as their genetics, immune system, and chronic pain. For example, loud noises trigger headaches in the patient. Therefore, we can say that the jobsite’s ambience be a cause of some of the patient’s migraines (imagine the patient who works in a foundry or somewhere else with loud noise). Environmental factors such as pollution and job hazards will also be taken into account, as well as psychological factors like anger, personality, and stress levels. Furthermore, Psychology and Health 3 even sociocultural and cultural factors will be taken into account such as the patient’s family size and health care access ability. The M model’s advocates believe that by practicing this information and observation gathering process, they will be in a better position to treat their patient’s psychological issues. Furthermore, they believe they will also be able to generate better results from the patient in terms of benefiting holistically from the treatment of the M model practitioner. Last, to summarize once again, the M model believes that understanding all of the above-mentioned factors in a patient’s life, that is, his or her genetic make-up, environmental history, can be the best early diagnosis tool for understanding and treating patients. How does the Multi-factorial approach to health relate to the diagnosis of illnesses' The Multi-factorial approach to health relates to the diagnosis of illnesses in patients in two key ways. First, it recognizes that the individual is a whole being, made up of distinctive emotional, physical, and mental components, which all work, often together, to express the health of the individual. This recognition allows M model practitioners to gain the most health relevant information on their patient as possible. This information can be used to diagnose illnesses with increased specificity as well as to prescribe treatments will be more effective because of the superior diagnoses methods used by the M model and its practitioners. Clearly then, the Multi-factorial approach to health relates to the diagnoses of illness by providing a more specific, or accurate diagnoses. Taking into account the patient’s biological Psychology and Health 4 details such as his or her genetics, immune system, and chronic pain as well as acknowledging the patient’s environmental factors such as pollution and job hazards. Psychological factors like anger, personality, and stress levels, is yet further explanation of how the M model approach to health relates to the diagnoses of illnesses in patients by M model practitioners. Two of the health problems that are discussed in the text include; Several health problems are discussed in the text. Stress and migraine headaches are two particular health problems included in the text. These two health problems I am familiar with. I do not like either of them because they both are difficult health problems to deal with unless one is aware of how to deal with them, and the different forms they take when ailing an individual- especially stress. Stress is a broad category health problem. Like a catalyst, it is a launching board for a whole host of other health problems that can come about in an individual’s life based on stress. To me, this is the most dangerous health problem caused by stress. It can weaken a person’s immune system, change his or her physical appearance (gray hair, age facial lines, atrophy muscles, wrinkle foreheads, and more), and seriously alter their behavior. Again, like a gateway drug or chemical catalyst, stress can lead to the most dangerous illness called depression. Along with depression, there are hosts of other diseases, which stress can bring about, or exacerbate. It is for this reason that I chose to write about stress. It is a broad disease that manifests itself often in other diseases, which come about because the person is suffering from stress, a weakened immune system, sadness, a low spiritual energy level, etc. Psychology and Health 4 Migraine headaches are complicated as well but not as amorphous and broad in category. However, it is interesting to note that one of the possible triggers of a migraine headache in some individuals who suffer from them is stress. Migraine headaches are defined as a neurological syndrome characterized by altered bodily perceptions, severe headaches, and nausea (medical-dictionary. Migraine+headache). Migraine headaches are intense. The often debilitate the victim and cause them not to go to work, school, or whatever daily function they would normally have engaged in (ibid). Migraine headaches are a big health problem to me because they are not only extremely painful for the victim, but for those around them as well. In addition, migraines affect as many as 24 million people in the United States alone (ibid). There are a large number of people who suffer from the pain of these types of headaches as well as the lost work, poor job performance, direct medical costs, poor academic performance, and more. In conclusion, stress and migraine headaches are two health problems that psychology has played a role in understanding and managing (Nevid, 2005). Stress is such a broad category that the study of it became an important task to psychologists (ibid). The same goes for most diseases and illnesses but stress, being a ‘gateway’ to many other illnesses must constantly be studied and better understood because of how many people are affected by it, and the numerous other illnesses it can lead to, or bring about. In the same light, psychologists continuously try better to understand and manage migraine headaches, and how they affect individual patients who suffer from migraine headaches.
