Prenatal and Postpartum Memo Deborah Roberts University of Phoenix/Axia College Online Human and Growth and Development PSY 280 Stephanie Lyncheski October 13, 2012 Prenatal and Postpartum Memo Memo Pregnant and Postpartum Women Women who are pregnant or have just given birth should take care of their health. This consists of getting plenty of exercise, eating healthy, being free of stress, and getting enough rest. This is for the health of the mother and the growth of the child during the pregnancy and after the birth of the child. During the changes of the woman during and after the birth of the baby I have prepared a list that will positively affect the development of the child and mother. Diet during the pregnancy and birth of the child is important. In the sixth month of pregnancy a woman should eat several small meals during the day (approximately five). Your diet should consist of foods that are high in protein, iron, vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates. It should be low in sugar, salt, and caffeine. Alcoholic drinks should be avoided, as should drugs not prescribed by your physician. Proper nutrition should be introduced to the child at the start of life. Regular exercise is essential to the health of the mother and child during the pregnancy and after the birth of the child. The best time to do the exercising is in the morning. Walking is one of the best ways to get endurance. When doing exercises you should focus on posture, abdominal strength, flexibility and cardiovascular and pelvic strengthening. The exercises will help with the delivery of you baby and help you return to pre-pregnancy weight faster. Doing this after the birth of your baby you will be able to show your child as they grow how to be healthy. When you are in you sixth month of pregnancy you may feel like you have a lot of energy. You may have what is known as “Nesting”, which is where you start setting up for the arrival of my newborn. But you must get as much rest as possible. Your baby is growing and it may be harder to sleep at night due to the increasing size of your belly. You may have frequent urination, leg cramping and changes in your metabolism can cause you not to get the sleep you need. You may try eating a meal three hours before bed, walking to relieve stress, and avoid long naps during the day. After your baby is born try to get a sleeping schedule setup for you and the baby. Ask your partner to help with the nightly feedings so that you are able to get some sleep. If breast feeding your baby pump so that your partner will be able to help with the late night feeding.
