PROVIDE BODY TREATMENT Most body electrical treatments are used as a part of a program designed specifically for clients to allow them to lose weight or reshape their body. Electrical equipment may be introduced: * When the client is trying to lose weight through a particular diet – the electrical equipment can increase the effectiveness of the diet. * To provide a variety of treatment to motivate and keep the client interested throughout the program. * When only specific areas need to be treated to enable localized reduction in size and shape. It must be stressed to the client that the use of electrical equipment alone is not enough to lose weight or shape the body. To benefit from the program effectively the client need: * To follow a well-balanced diet * To increase the amount of physical exercise * The application of appropriate body treatments The electrical treatments available are: * G5 * Vacuum massage * Direct high frequency * Indirect high frequency * Galvanic machine * Faradic machine * Steamer * Infrared lamp Manual treatments available include: * Full body massage * Back massage * Full body exfoliation * Full body brush G5 This machine has several different applicator heads. They are all used during treatment to achieve a deeper massage through the whole body: * Sponge heads are used for effleurage * Hard rubber heads are used for petrissage * Spiky brush heads are used to produce similar effects of tapotement Effects of G5 * Stimulates the circulation system, increasing blood supply to the area being treated, so providing nourishment to the skin and muscles and improving skin colour. * Improved lymphatic drainage assists in the reduction of cellulite. * Desquamates dead skin cells. * Relaxes tense muscles * Eases muscular pain. * Penetrates deep into the subcutaneous layer helping the dispersal of fatty tissue. * Motivates the client in their aim to reduce weight and improve their body shape. Advantages of G5 * Less personal than manual massage – ideal for male clients * Deeper massage than manual massage * Less tiring Vacuum massage The main purpose of this treatment is to increase the body’s circulation and lymphatic flow to remove waste products and excess fluid. It is normally used as part of treatments combined with manual massage. It is used for spot reduction on legs, back, arms, thighs and buttocks. Effects of vacuum suction: * Increase in circulation; dilates blood vessels and causes increase in blood flow to the skin * Increases nourishment in skin and muscles * Stimulates the lymphatic system * Reduces puffiness caused by fluid retention * Helps in the breakdown and removal f fatty cells * Aids in desquamation * Stimulates metabolism Direct high frequency Is an external application that produces a germicidal effect through ozone formation of the skin’s surface with the use of a glass electrode. The air sparks between the electrode and skin combines with oxygen. It is used for acne-type lesions using an argon (violet/blue) gas electrode for a sparking treatment. Oily skins with overall congestion uses neon (orange/red) gas electrode for drying and germicidal effect. Lighter movements of the electrode over the skin produces a stronger the germicidal effect. Effects of direct high frequency: * Disinfect skin * Drying and healing acne/seborrhea * Provides warming sensation to increase skin temperature Indirect high frequency Is the use of the current for relaxation and sedation. The current flows through the surface of the body i.e. the skin. When used with manual massage, an increase in the relaxation effect will be observed. Effects of Indirect High Frequency: * Stimulates blood lymphatic flow * Stimulates the heat in the tissue * Stimulates sebaceous secretion * Stimulates relaxation effect Indications for Use: * Aging and loose skin. * Post-operative skin conditions. * Recent scar tissue (between 4-9 months). * Clients who dislike firm pressure massage. Steamer Cleanses and opens the pores and allows impurities to be flushed away. Effects of steamers: * Softens congestions in the pores and comedones are removed easily * Stimulates the sudiferous glands to produce sweat leading to waste elimination * Softens dead skin cells aiding desquamation * Prepares the skin for further treatments Galvanic machine This machine aids in the removal of cellulite. It is applied locally on the specific areas that require treatment. The aim of the treatment is to soften stubborn areas of fat and disperse fluid retention in certain areas of the body and thus, removes the lumps and bumps that are typical with a cellulite condition. Effects of galvanic machine: * Stimulates circulation * Stimulates nerve endings in the skin * Softening of the tissues * Opening of the pores * Fluid movement Faradic machine The faradic treatment (EMS) can aid muscle tone without exercise by controlled stimulation of the sagging muscle groups.  It can aid body toning during weight loss, to achieve greater results. It can achieve excellent results on problem areas where cellulite occurs, such as thighs and abdomen. It is also good for stretch marks associated with childbirth. The toning treatments can lift and firm the body muscles improving the overall body shape. The skin texture and condition is improved by the increased lymphatic drainage. Effects of EMS: * Improves tone by shortening muscles * Contraction of muscles creates pressure on blood and lymph vessels improving flow * Increased blood flow increases supply of nutrients and oxygen for cellular regeneration * Increased lymph flow increases toxin removal * Improves skin texture Infrared lamp The lamp produces a narrow band of infrared rays that increases blood circulation to specific areas of the body. Heat therapy is one of most effective treatments for sore muscles. Infrared heat radiates heat directly on sore muscles without manipulating the surrounding air. Infrared warmth penetrates deep into skin, improving blood circulation. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 1 Determine the client’s requirements: Kerry is in her 40s and her muscle tone is not as good as it used to be especially around her upper arms, stomach and upper legs. Her main concerns are the cellulite that collects on her upper thighs and around her hips. She also wants her upper arm to tone up more. Analyze client characteristics: Kerry exercises regularly and eats quite a healthy diet. Sometimes she misses doing her regular exercise and only does light walks when she can. Kerry is reasonably fit. Kerry understands that the electrical treatments in combination with the manual treatments are designed specifically to allow weight loss or reshaping of her body. It is does not however replace normal physical exercise. Identify contraindications: During assessment of Kerry’s client card, no contraindications that may interfere with the electrical treatments were found. All jewellery was removed. Develop treatment details: As was stated earlier Kerry wanted her cellulite from her hips, arms and upper legs to be less obvious. I suggested for the first week that we use the Faradic machine wherein it will specifically tone up her muscle by controlled stimulation by a series of contractions on the target areas. The thighs are followed by the hip, arm and stomach areas. These stimulation and contractions is similar to the action of exercising the muscles manually but in targeted spots. I then followed up the treatment with the galvanic machine wherein it will specifically breakdown the collection of cellulite (fatty cells) and to enable it to be easily dispersed. Thus, the appearance of lumps and bumps is significantly diminished. To finish off the treatment, a manual massage with indirect high frequency (increases the overall effect of the manual massage) was performed on Kerry. Not only will the manual massage help Kerry to relax and recover from the electrical treatments, it will also aid in the dispersion of cellulite cells and elimination of toxins away from the system. How the client felt during the treatment: All throughout the treatment, I kept a constant check on how Kerry felt. Any discomfort experienced was dealt with immediately (feeling cold, machine voltage too much). Kerry had no trouble with the Faradic machine. With the Galvanic machine, Kerry was able to sustain the maximum setting. After the electrical treatments, Kerry appreciated the relaxing effects of the manual massage and at some stage during the massage, Kerry dozed off. How the client felt after the treatment: The Faradic machine made Kerry feel that she’s already done her gym work for the day. Kerry said that there was a slight discomfort from the galvanic machine when it was switched to the positive pole but otherwise it wasn’t too bad. She said it wasn’t her favourite machine but would like to keep with the treatment if it would help lessen her cellulite. Kerry also said that she felt so relaxed after the massage. Home care advice given: I advised Kerry to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her. I also advised her to drink plenty of water especially straight after the treatment and all throughout the day. Reflective practice: The Infrared lamp (effects and actions discussed above) would have been ideal to provide warmth on the areas being treated. Since other students were using it with their clients it was not possible to do this at this time. Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Kerry allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Kerry was satisfied with the first session and is looking forward to the next treatment. Client comfort and requirements were achieved in a professional manner. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 2 Develop treatment details: For this week, I started with the G5 machine on Kerry. This machine achieves a deeper massage throughout the whole body and penetrates deep into the subcutaneous layer helping the dispersal of fatty tissue. The attachments include: (a) sponge heads are used for effleurage, (b) hard rubber heads are used for petrissage, and (c) spiky brush heads are used to produce similar effects of tapotement. The G5 stimulates the circulation system, increase blood supply to the area being treated thus, providing nourishment to the skin and muscles and improving skin colour. It also has the effect of improving the lymphatic drainage to assist in the reduction of cellulite, desquamate dead skin cells, relaxes tense muscles, and eases muscular pain. I also used the Infrared lamp on the areas being treated. Following the G5 machine, vacuum suction was performed. The main purpose of the vacuum machine is to increase the body’s circulation and lymphatic flow to remove waste products and excess fluid. It is normally used in combination with the manual massage which in this treatment was performed. How the client felt during the treatment: All throughout the treatment, I kept a constant check on how Kerry felt. Any discomfort experienced was dealt with immediately (feeling cold, machine voltage too much). Kerry had no trouble with the G5 machine. After the electrical treatments, Kerry appreciated the relaxing effects of the manual massage. How the client felt after the treatment: Kerry liked the deeper massage action of the G5. Kerry also said that she felt so relaxed after the manual massage. Home care advice given: I advised Kerry to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her. I also advised her to drink plenty of water. Reflective practice: The Infrared lamp (effects and actions discussed above) was ideal in providing warmth on the areas being treated. Overall conclusion: Kerry records her food consumption efficiently which further down the track will show very good benefits. Her food consumption is reasonably healthy. The treatments performed on Kerry allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Kerry was satisfied with this session and is looking forward to the next treatment. Client comfort and requirements were achieved in a professional manner. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 3 Develop treatment details: For this week, I started with the galvanic machine. The upper thighs were done first followed with the hip and stomach areas. The G5 machine followed. I also used the Infrared lamp on the areas being treated. Following the G5 machine, vacuum suction was performed to flush out the toxins. To finish off the treatment program, a manual massage with indirect high frequency was performed on Kerry. How the client felt after the treatment: Kerry at this stage is familiar with the effects and feel of the machines. Kerry also said that she felt so relaxed after the manual massage. Home care advice given: I advised Kerry to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her. I also advised her to drink plenty of water. Reflective practice: Treatments were performed professionally and with great care for the client’s requirements and comfort. Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Kerry allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Skin appearance and condition had improved. Kerry said that her cellulite seem to be lessening from what she can observe. Kerry was satisfied with this session and is looking forward to the next treatment. Kerry continues to eat healthy and is recording her food consumption very well. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 4 Develop treatment details: Kerry was unable to attend this week. This week I would have used the Faradic machine on her thighs followed by the hip, arm and stomach areas. I would then follow up the treatment with the galvanic machine. To finish off the treatment, a manual massage with indirect high frequency in conjunction with the vacuum suction would be performed on Kerry. The manual massage would help Kerry to relax and recover from the electrical treatments. How the client felt during the treatment: All throughout the treatment, I would have kept a constant check on how Kerry felt. Any discomfort experienced would be dealt with immediately (feeling cold, machine voltage too much). After the electrical treatments, Kerry would have appreciated the relaxing effects of the manual massage. How the client felt after the treatment: N/A Home care advice given: I would have advised Kerry to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her. I would also advise her to drink plenty of water. Reflective practice: N/A Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Kerry would have allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Client comfort and requirements would have been achieved in a professional manner. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 5 Due to Kerry finding work at this stage I now have a new client - Gemma. Determine the client’s requirements: Gemma has similar concerns to Kerry. She wanted her cellulite from her upper thighs to be treated and tone up her hips and stomach areas. Analyze client characteristics: Gemma is in her 30s and keeps reasonably fit by going to the gym as often as she can. She has healthy eating habits. Gemma understands that the electrical treatments in combination with the manual treatments are designed specifically to allow weight loss or reshaping of her body. It is does not however replace normal physical exercise. Identify contraindications: During assessment of Gemma’s client card, no contraindications that may interfere with the electrical treatments were found. All jewellery were removed. Develop treatment details: For this week I used the Faradic machine on Gemma’s thighs followed by the hip and stomach areas. I then followed up the treatment with the galvanic machine. To finish off the treatment, a manual massage with indirect high frequency was performed on Gemma. The manual massage helped Gemma to relax recover from the electrical treatments. How the client felt during the treatment: All throughout the treatment, I kept a constant check on how Gemma felt. Any discomfort experienced was dealt with immediately (feeling cold, machine voltage too much). Gemma had no trouble with the Faradic machine. With the Galvanic machine however, Gemma was only able to sustain the minimum setting. She experienced a slight discomfort when the machine was switched to the positive pole. After the electrical treatments, Gemma appreciated the relaxing effects of the manual massage and at some stage during the massage, Gemma fell asleep. How the client felt after the treatment: Gemma said that he Faradic machine made her feel that she’s already done her gym work for the day. Gemma said that there was a slight discomfort from the galvanic machine when it was switched to the positive pole but otherwise it wasn’t too bad. Gemma appreciated the manual massage. Home care advice given: I advised Gemma to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her and drink plenty of water. Since other students were using it with their clients it was not possible to do this at this time. Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Gemma allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Gemma was satisfied with the first session and is looking forward to the next treatment. Client comfort and requirements were achieved in a professional manner. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 6 Develop treatment details: For this week I used the G5 machine on Gemma to start off with. I then followed up the treatment with the galvanic machine first on her upper thighs and then her hips and stomach followed. This time Gemma was able to tolerate the median voltage of the machine. To finish off the treatment, a manual massage in conjunction with the vacuum suction was performed on Gemma. The manual massage helped Gemma to relax and recover from the electrical treatments. How the client felt during the treatment: All throughout the treatment, I kept a constant check on how Gemma felt. Any discomfort experienced was dealt with immediately (feeling cold, machine voltage too much). How the client felt after the treatment: Gemma said that there was a slight discomfort from the galvanic machine when it was switched to the positive pole but otherwise it wasn’t too bad. After the electrical treatments, Gemma appreciated the relaxing effects of the manual massage. Home care advice given: I advised Gemma to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her and drink plenty of water. Reflective practice: Overall the treatment went well. Gemma was satisfied with the treatments. She also said that since she started with the program she found that she was eating better and is able to actually observe what type of food she consumes throughout the day. Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Gemma allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Gemma was satisfied with the first session and is looking forward to the next treatment. Client comfort and requirements were achieved in a professional manner. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 7 Develop treatment details: For this week I started Gemma with an overall exfoliation. This exfoliation is an extra treat that was included in the treatment program. I then used the Faradic machine on her upper thighs and stomach. I then followed up the treatment with the galvanic machine. This time Gemma was able to tolerate the maximum voltage of the machine. Gemma appreciated the warming effect of the infrared lamp. How the client felt after the treatment: Gemma enjoyed the exfoliation and manual massage. She also liked the Faradic machine. Home care advice given: I advised Gemma to keep up her exercise regime. Fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her and drink plenty of water. Reflective practice: Overall the treatment went well. Gemma was satisfied with the treatments. Since her last visit, Gemma found that not only is she eating better she is also getting more motivation to increase her exercise regime. Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Gemma allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Gemma was satisfied with the session and is looking forward to the next treatment. Client comfort and requirements were achieved in a professional manner. TREATMENT PLAN WEEK 8 Develop treatment details: For this week I would have used the Faradic machine upon Gemma’s request. However, Gemma was unavailable today. I would then follow up the treatment with the G5 machine first on her upper thighs and then her hips and stomach followed. To finish off the treatment, a manual massage in conjunction with the vacuum suction was performed on Gemma. The manual massage helped Gemma to relax and recover from the electrical treatments. How the client felt during the treatment: N/A How the client felt after the treatment: N/A Home care advice given: I would have advised Gemma to keep up her exercise regime. I would also suggest that if she felt inclined, to continue to fill out the daily food consumption record that I have given her. Keep up with drinking plenty of water. Reflective practice: Circumstances that cannot be avoided had greatly interrupted the whole treatment program. In an ideal situation, a noticeable improvement would have been observed had my clients continuously received the treatments. Overall conclusion: The treatments performed on Gemma and Kerry would have allowed the target areas to be treated and improved. Gemma from the occasions that she was treated was very satisfied with the sessions. This is the same in Kerry’s case. Client comfort and requirements were achieved in a professional manner. Majority of the aims of the treatment program were achieved such as: (a) general toning and relaxation, (b) good eating habits, (c) general wellbeing and weight loss, and (d) increased motivation to further improve her exercise regime. OUTCOME ANALYSIS: The aim of the treatments as was stated at the start would in an ideal situation have no problem of being achieved. The electrical treatments that were used as a part of this program treatment were designed specifically to allow clients to lose weight or reshape their body. With the faradic machine, the contraction range of the machine generates a dramatic form of exercise. This allows to correct and to shape the loose portion of the target area of the body. It will shape the curve of the waist, slim down the abdomen to allow a flat belly, firms up the upper arms and tightens the muscles of the hip, buttocks and upper legs. These effects would have been observed had my clients had a constant set of treatments. The galvanic machine aimed to aid the breakdown of stubborn hard fatty deposits and disperse the fluid that is retained in the target areas. This machine increases the circulation of the tissues leading to dispersal of toxins and excess fluids. This treatment should be performed for up to 3 times a week before a significant improvement can be seen. Circumstances that cannot be avoided did not make this possible for my clients. The G5 machine provided a deeper massage for my clients. It provided certain relief in certain areas. The vacuum suction increased lymphatic and circulatory movement thus, helped in the removal of toxins on the area. It also aided in desquamation, stimulation of glandular activity and improved the general texture of the skin. It is very soothing and relaxing. The indirect high frequency incorporated in the manual massage provided a deeper massage creating warmth in the area. It would have improved the skin, relaxed the tissues and helped increase poor or sluggish circulation to the area. Both Kerry and Gemma indicated that this is the best part of the treatment program. The overall electrical treatments had given Gemma and Kerry a whole new experience of body treatments available. That in an ideal situation, a visit to a salon of at least 3 times a week further increases the overall effects of the electrical treatments producing weight loss and overall body reshaping. Home care advice given: I advised Kerry to keep up her exercise regime. This involves vigorous walking everyday for at least half an hour. In most days, she gets to fit in an hour of walking. Kerry was also involved in a boot camp program. When she finished with the bootcamp program, she then continued with the walking regime. Sometimes she wasn’t able to do any exercise due to time restrictions but overall, she does pretty well. Gemma does a lot of gym exercises. She keeps herself fit and as can sometimes happen, she misses a few days here and there due to time restrictions like Kerry but overall, she does a good job of exercising regularly. Diet-wise, both Kerry and Gemma eats pretty healthy besides the occasional alcohol excesses, they both know that drinking plenty of water after these incidences will counteract some of the side-effects of too much alcohol. This includes overall dehydration and toxicity of the internal body circulation. I explained to both Kerry and Gemma the importance of having regular meals. That more frequent small meals throughout the day is more beneficial than having less number of meals in larger proportions. This is not a good way of getting the metabolism to work for you. Both Kerry and Gemma sometimes misses breakfast for one reason or another. I advised them that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Try not to miss any. Gemma indicated that since being on the program, she felt that she was eating more often and felt more energetic. She hardly misses any breakfast and she limits her alcohol intake during the weekends. She is also finding that she exercises more often and that she also had lost a little bit of weight while on the program. Kerry also indicated that she makes it a point not to miss breakfast. And although she hasn’t been able to exercise as much as she wanted to, she found that she has not gained any more weight than when she first started. Both clients indicated that since recording their food intake on a daily basis, they began to watch what they were eating. They began to realize that they are eating healthier. I then told them to keep up the good work. I have told both clients the importance of drinking plenty of water especially right after the treatments. They have been informed that toxic substances had been drained during the treatment therefore; this has to be get rid of. Drinking a lot of water will accomplish this. Drinking plenty of water will help: * rehydrate the body, * increase oxygen delivery to all body cells, * regularly removes toxins and wastes from the body, and * keep the body cool through perspiration. The recommended amount of water intake for an adult is at least eight to ten glasses a day.
