When a woman becomes pregnant naturally, this is known as natural conception. Naturally conceiving a baby is an amazingly complex series of events and requires natural fertilization. once a couple decide they want a baby, it is best they true during the stage of ovulation.( when one or more eggs are released from one of your ovaries) every time a couple make love, the man releases semen containing millions of sperm cells into the woman. At the same time, an egg will be released from the ovary and begin its journey along the fallopian tube. The fallopian (fah-loh-pee-un) tubes are the site where eggs and the sperm meet at fertilization, and where the first divisions of the newly formed embryo take place. A new genetic individual is formed and a potential new life has begun! After fertilization the single cell begins to grow and divide as it continues to travel along the fallopian tube to the uterus. By the time it reaches the uterus it is a small ball of cells, and cell divisions take place. After nine months a fully formed baby human being is ready to emerge and take place in the world. However, this is not the case for some people. For an increasing number of couples, the months without a positive pregnancy test turn into years. Which is extremely distressing for couples wanting children. Some couples are just unable to bear children for a wide variety of possible reasons. Including: • Males with low sperm counts • Males with impotence • Females who cannot ovulate normally • Females with blocked Fallopian tubes. Reproductive technologies have been developed to help overcome these situations. One of the most common of these new technologies is in-vitro fertilization. IVF offers a way of overcoming infertility for women whose Fallopian tubes are blocked, twisted or damaged beyond repair, where neither eggs nor sperm can travel along the tubes. The treatment combines the egg and sperm outside the body, and returns the developing embryo to the uterus, bypassing the need for the fallopian tubes. Usually 2 or 3 healthy embryos are introduced into the woman’s uterus for implantations. This procedure is very expensive and using only one embryo could mean a high risk of failure and having to repeat the procedure. Introducing more than 1 embryo increases the likelihood that at least one will implant successfully. Any healthy embryos that are not implanted can be frozen and used later if another procedure is needed. for • One of the many positive points on IVF is that it enables couples who would otherwise be unable to have children to have a family and bring happiness to couples. Ivf brings Joy and great satisfaction to many lives. • Embryos that are visibly not healthy in early the stages of development can be eliminated from consideration for implantation. This would reduce the difficult and distressing feelings of both parents while the embryo implanted into the mothers tummy does not succeed. • Genetic screening is possible on embryos before implanting them into the mothers uterus. This enables the doctors to eliminate the chance of passing on genetic diseases and it also enables them to recognize, using genetic screening, the most healthiest and finest embryos to implant into the mother. This also decreases the increasing demand of couples genetically engineering and designing their children to the best of human kind. It is better to use money on techniques and procedures that will have greater benefits. For example, - ivf includes genetic engineering and also potentionally creating lives for couples who are unable to conceive naturally. Whereas genetic engineering on its own is not as beneficial. • IVF technology will advance and lead to further benefits in reproductive biology. It will open many doors for scientists and doctors. To many other possible technologies that are yet to be discovered. AGAINST: However there are some points and views that go against what i have just been talking to you about. • Embryos that are produced during culturing but are not implanted are either frozen or destroyed. This is an extremely miserable and guilty act for parents. These embryos that are being destroyed are potential human lives. 99% of embryos are being destroyed for the best of embryos. Where’s the morality in this' Since when was killing human lives okay. There is no greater sin than to kill. There is no difference in abortion and destroying potential lives. They are both equally corrupt acts. • there are complex legal issues concerning the use of those frozen embryos when couples split up. ( talk about article) • genetic screening of embryos could lead to society choosing desirable characteristics. They will forget the blessing they have had by being able to have a child under circumstances, and will be too busy focusing on choosing the characteristics they want. • IVF is extremely and in no doubt expensive. On average, for each IVF cycle, 7117 dollars is required. After parents putting this much money and hope into the IVF procedure and to receive negative feedback is an awfully distressing and painful feeling for parents. • From the first time IVF was discovered, IVF has been criticized for putting couples under tremendous strain. It can raise unrealistic hopes that end in cruel hurtful disappointment. It can be painful, physically and emotionally. Only 22% of ALL ivf treatments succeed, which means most couples who try it experience failure, often several times. This failure can lead to depression and put a heavy strain on relationships often causing breakups and divorces. • Multiple births and the problems associated with a multiple births are more likely with IVF than with natural conception. Due to more than 1 embryos being implanted into the woman’s uterus. Twins and triplets is not often what couples hope for. It can be distressing and too much to handle for them. RELIGIOUS After discussing al these points i thought id might like to discuss how couples that are not being able to conceive children and want to do IVF are affected by their religious beliefs. • The catholic views on IVF treatments are unacceptable because they separate the conception of a child from the sexual act between parents. Says popes of the catholic churches. • From a Muslim perspective, production of children is vitally important part of married life. Islamic teaching also states that for every illness there is a cure, so IVF is regarded as acceptable and right that an infertile couple should seek help. Islamic scholars accept the use of IVF but only if the eggs and sperm of the husband and wife concerned are used in the treatment. But use of donated eggs, sperm or embryos is completely unacceptable because it breaks the unity of the marriage bond. • Jewish people have the same approach to the use of IVF as Muslims have and that is the use of sperm and eggs that are used in the treatment belong to the parents only. • For Hindus, with their belief of reincarnation, treatments such as IVF raise may problems. Only a husband is allowed to touch his wife, so a doctor cannot interfere with the act of conception hence , making IVF unacceptable for Hindus.
