Proper Parenting and Why it is Important
Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Parents share a heartfelt relationship with their children; they also serve as healthy role models. Proper parenting means learning successful parenting skills. There are many different ways parents can show that they are properly raising their children, but one of the most important aspects of proper parenting is showing good judgment. Proper parenting can also mean being able to provide emotional security and guidance for children which will help them in their adulthood.
Proper parenting skills start with good judgment. Judgment develops from experience. Good judgment develops from bad experiences. People in general aren’t born making wise decisions, it is the bad decisions a person makes which teaches them what to do and what not to do. Parents have to know when to say no their children and when to give in to their wants. When you make good choices your children see this and will learn to make good judgments on their own.
Developing a child’s emotional security is another important aspect of proper parenting. Emotional security starts at birth and continues into adulthood. Children learn to feel secure or insecure depending on the relationships they have with their parents or caregivers. Emotional security is psychological in a sense. When a child feels insecure he or she will regress by doing things they’ve outgrown such as wetting the bed, sucking their thumb, or hugging a bear or pillow pretending it is a person. Children who feel secure grow up to be very sociable with high self-esteem and they adapt well in society. The feeling of safety and security should come from a mother and father, and not objects such as a bear or blanket.
Guidance is teaching a child everything he or she needs to know in order to transition from childhood to adulthood. Positive guidance is to further build a child’s self-esteem and not self-destruct it. Guidance means providing a good education, social limits, punishment and consequences for children so that they may learn to become a responsible adult. In order to understand what proper guidance is the parent must learn successful parenting skills. Children must understand that receiving a good education is necessary to make it through life. While a parent can provide some learning experience for the child, a teacher can also provide the same affect. Getting a good education and developing relationships with teachers and other students also helps with a child’s communication skills. A good level of communication between a child and parent will help aid in a better understanding of each other. Parents should be in full control of their child’s social life. Providing social limits, whether it being going outside to play, hanging out with friends, and television should be limited. Children in today’s society rely heavily on social media and television as a source of entertainment. Parents should make sure their children are doing something educational at least twice a week so that they don’t lose their educational focus. A punishment allows children to take responsibility for any misbehavior. Consequences aren’t meant to harm a child but simply to reinforce rules that were broken.
Learning the skills necessary for proper parenting is important especially in today’s society where kids are practically raising themselves. Parents allow kids to sit in front of the TV and watch educational programs to teach themselves. Parents in today’s society also send their children to school to learn and don’t reinforce what their kids are learning outside of the classrooms. Proper parenting is important because it provides some guidance for first time parents who don’t want to raise their children the way they were. Effective parenting depends on understanding each child and the way they act at different ages.
