SHC33 Promote equality and inclusion Explain each of the terms showing understanding of the difference and meaning and give example that applies to your setting. Diversity Diversity is usually defined as having a mixture of people peacefully co-existing in a place, be it in a community or work place as perfect examples and no one is being discriminated based on one’s race, religion, sex, sexual preference and the like. It is that state of being able to recognize that everyone is different and that these differences should not matter in how we treat each other. Although the term is often used to refer to differences based on ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability, national origin and sexual orientation, diversity encompasses an infinite range of individuals' unique characteristics and experiences, including communication styles, physical characteristics such as height and weight, and speed of learning and comprehension. In my school we have lots of different cultures and we embrace them all and we promote diversity within the school by having events such as international snack attack, where people from different countries bring in foods for their country and we all try them. Equality Equality is about treating other people fairly and equally. Not treating people fairly will make them feel undervalued. Equality is supported by legislation that makes it illegal to discriminate, victimise or harass someone because of a real or believed difference. Legislation covers sex, sexual orientation, ethnic background, religion and belief, disability, and age Inclusion. Inclusion means giving children with special needs or children regardless of their sexual orientation, ethnic background, religion and belief, disability, and age and their parents or caregivers the same opportunities to learn, enjoy and participate as other families have. All children benefit from inclusion. Exposure to children with diverse skills and abilities at a young age provides a foundation for a lifetime of understanding and respecting differences. It promotes awareness of human differences and leads to greater acceptance. SHC33-1.2 Describe the potential effects of discrimination. Someone who faces discrimination can suffer from low self esteem, lack of confidence, insecurity, becoming withdrawn, depression/stress, anxiety, sudden change in behavior, lack of co-operation and learned helplessness. the social effects can be feeling isolated, having a lack of friends, becoming withdrawn and feel unrecognized as an individual, It can lead to missed opportunities that may affect a child’s experiences and development. SHC33-1.3 Explain how inclusive practice promotes equality and supports diversity. Inclusion is the opposite of discrimination, so schools should always aim for inclusion so children do not face any discrimination or prejudice. Working towards inclusion involves striving to ensure barriers are removed to make all children and families part of your setting and taking steps to open up equality of opportunity and promote positive attitudes to diversity. Identify legislation relating to equality, diversity and discrimination and explain how it applies to your practice. Most of the legislations covering the children’s laws and equality and inclusion are followed and practiced within my school. These include the children act 1999, United Nations convention on the rights of the child 1990, protection of children’s act 1999, sexual offences act 2003, special educational needs and disabilities act 2001, these are just some of the legislations that should be used within a school. They ensure that children are protected and have equal opportunities. Equality and diversity is accepted and practiced within my setting. Racism or discrimination of any form is not tolerated and attitudes or remarks of these manners are challenged regardless if it from a child or adult. My school and I believe that the world is diverse and we are all equally regardless of our differences. Children that maybe disabled or have special educational needs are to be fully supported and adaption’s made within our setting in order to have equal opportunities. The children’s act states no child should be discriminated against because of their background, religion, gender etc therefore to meet this law we ensure all staff and the school celebrates differences i.e. our role play area has a range of different dressing up equipment including clothes from different cultures also we ensure inclusive practice is used and that all the children have the same opportunity to learn, play and develop regardless of their culture or gender etc. this is done through effective planning. SHC33-3.3 Describe how to challenge discrimination in a way that promotes change. You should never ignore or excuse such discriminatory behaviour any more than you would ignore or excuse someone if they inflicted physical pain on someone else. Must be addressed because if you do not respond and just let the incident pass you are contributing to the person feeling that it is acceptable to speak or behave that way. To promote change you need to change people’s attitude toward other races, sexuality, religion etc. We try to educate our children in school about different culture, disabilities by doing things like having time so that children can share their experiences with each other, and encourage them to think of other people’s feelings and share different options with each other and also give them the opportunity to think about what it is like foe other people and ask them to think about themselves in other people shoes.
