Promote communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings Unit 4227-051 1.1 Identify the different reasons people communicate. People communicate in different ways and for different reasons, it is a way of making contact and being understood by others. The main two ways of communicating are verbal communication through speaking and non-verbal communication through body language. Within a Y.P care setting people communicate to make and develop relationships, give and receive information, express needs and feelings, affirming one another and to share thoughts and ideas. 1.2 Explain how communication affects relationships in the work setting. Having the ability to communicate well with others will help everyone to work effectively, it is important to remember that listening is a major part of a two way process. Before you begin to try and communicate gain the other person’s attention, get your reason for communicating across clearly and remember that each person you speak to will need a different approach as you wouldn’t speak to another care worker the same way you would a Y.P who may be in trouble. Listen to what they have to say carefully showing empathy and give a summary of what they have said to show you understand. Work well as part of a team, don’t keep your thoughts and ideas to yourself, share any ideas with other team members as this may help them work better with a Y.P. If you have a new Y.P join you, think how they may be feeling entering a new environment, take time to give them a warm welcome and that you are there to support them as much as possible as first impressions always count if they feel safe and welcome by you they are more likely going to open up to you.
