Running head: My Professional Ethics My Professional Ethics Point of View Sue Hoppler RN Grand Canyon University As a nurse I have taken the oath of “I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.” (Florence Nightingale, nursingword.com) As a Christian I believe in the basic principles of honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, compassion and care. I try to make these the principles of my life and therefore the principles of my nursing. My passion is in my belief system that truth is the driving force. It is what guides me and motivates me to make decisions. It helps me decide what I feel is right and wrong, am I going to follow this policy to the letter' It also helps me decide what to do in certain situations. My passion is also the desire to truly make a difference. I am passionate about taking care of other human beings and making a difference in my patients’ lives, I also strive to make a difference in my facility, There is no greater drive then the one God has given us to bring healing and comfort to our family, patients and staff. Motivation is what moves us in our actions. The definition of motivation is to give reason, incentive, enthusiasm or interest that causes a specific action or behavior. Motivation is present in every aspect of life. We are motivated in the simple things in life, eating is motivated by hunger and sleep is motivated by exhaustion. Motivation can be anything from reward to Coercion (Pan, 2008). Motivation is what propels us forward into action. I am motivated by compassion and wanting to do my best. My education and knowledge motivates me also, I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others in the form of teaching. It is this passion and motivation that compels me to go to work everyday and do the best job I can with honesty and integrity and come home at night and feel good about my day. Inspiration is that very thing which makes you chases your dreams. It’s that blissful and exciting feeling you get when your heart glides and your soul is moved (Twain, 2008). My inspiration comes from my faith and my family. My faith in God knowing someone is watching over me and he will supply me with what I need. My family is my greatest inspiration. They inspire me to be an honest, caring and compassionate person. Their love and comfort makes me want to be the best I can be and share my abilities with others. Loyalty is defined faithfulness to commitments or obligations (Dictionary.com). My loyalty is to my higher calling. My God lets me know when its time to act time to move and which way to go. He also gives me the guidance to make the right decisions and has cultivated my nursing intuitiveness. In my personal life my loyalty is to my family, they support my decisions and me regardless if they are in agreement. They give me the strength to get through all the stressful situations because I know they will always be there for me. In nursing my loyalty is to my patients. Patients expect to be treated safely and receive the appropriate care when they are hospitalized. I am responsible to see that my patients are provided that. It is through my loyalty to my profession that I do my best to make sure they receive it. It is one of the few things we can do is protect our patients. A person with moral value has both consistent action and a morally- appropriate desire (Burkhardt, pg. 41). In doing the right thing morally you can find understanding in nursing. When following policies and procedures you can find fairness and equality in the delivery of care and justice to fit the appropriate situation. In order for my patients and families to have the best experience I must have focal values, compassion, disconcertment, trustworthiness, and integrity. I thank God I have found a profession where I can be the person I want to be. References Burkhardt, M. A. and Nathaniel, A. K. (2008). Ethics and Issues in Contemporary Nursing (3rd ed.).
