Being professional is an important part of everyday life. Unfortunately, many people do not know what the definition of professional behavior is, much less how to incorporate it into their everyday lives. Technically speaking, professional behavior is characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of one's profession. Although every situation that one is faced with is different, there are general guidelines which ensure that professional behavior is maintained. People exhibiting professional behavior are always polite, considerate, articulate, and remain calm and rational under any circumstances. An example of professional behavior in action which brought me about this determination is simple and started one busy night shift at a workplace years back in a nursing home with about 400 patients and dividing in four floors, which are, Alzheimer’s unit, dementia, psyches, and assistant care unit. Tired by the heavy workload, I went to the break room for a few minutes of rest. When I walked in, I saw a co-worker which is a 15 years graduate LPN in the break room trying to hide something in her jacket pocket while she was getting supplies and agitated at the same time. I did not pay attention to that incident, dismissing it as an illusion caused by my tiredness. During the next couple of months, I happened to see the same nurse and strangely enough she always seemed to be hiding something. I had an excellent friendship with her for years; I tried to find out if she needed help with anything that might be bothering her. The truth was indeed bizarre, when she confided in me that she was having narcotics pills taking from the clients’ medication due to her situation at home. If a nurse is accused of stealing drugs, the fact that she was caught taking a patient’s drugs is no defense to the defamatory statement. In addition, Sexual Harassment is another way to conduct yourself in a way that is not inappropriate, maintain a professional relationship with the client. Do not make any sexual advances with any of the patients or touch the client inappropriately. You cannot disclose Client’s personal information to anyone else. Do not discuss any of the client’s personal information to anyone else that it does not concern, including your family, friends, or even other co-workers who are not working with the patient. And avoid talking in hallways or outside client rooms -Don’t talk about the clients’ condition in the hallways or in front of them in their rooms. Do not assume that the client’s visitors or guests know anything about the clients’ conditions so it would be best if you kept any of this information to yourself.
