Introduction to Criminal Justice
CCJ 1024
Intensive Probation Supervision(IPS): is a type of probation where intermediate
Sanction involving small probation caseloads and strict monitoring on a daily or weekly basis. (Siegel&Worrall, p. 449) IPS is a highly structed program similar to house arrest and the defendant must comply with strict terms of the probation. Eligibility for the IPS program they may differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Defendants must live within the county and be willing to abide by the terms of IPS. Generally, offenders who have committed prior felonies or who have previously been on probation or parole are all candidates for IPS. Most jurisdictions allows the defendants to transition through three phases. The total time period ranges from nine to twenty-four months, depending on the compliance of the defendants and on the jurisdiction. Terms of probation such as you must obey all laws, report to your probation officer as directed, pay your court fees, and also you will need to abide by all the curfew limits and do not leave home without permission from your probation officer. House Arrest a form of supervision that requires the defendant a strict limitations on
Doing things, but also put the offender on a designated time in his or her home. House arrest is also an alternative to either jail, prison, or juvenile detention. (Siegel&Worrall) & (self). Although home confinement existed as far back as 1900 modern day house arrest which electronically monitored by law enforcement dates back to 1983. (ehow). When an offender is order to home confinement traveling is prohibited and when and if traveling is granted it’s usually to and from work. (self). Authorities are able to monitor people on house arrest through electronic monitoring device attached to them usually around ankles. This device alerts authorities whether it’s tampered with or whether an offender travels a certain distance away from their required limit (ehow) & (self). The goals of house arrest is just the same as prison or jail it reduces the probability of defendants committing any new crimes.
Electronic Monitoring is a device that keeps of a persons activities. Different
Types of electronic monitoring devices are GPS Active tracking Tether, GPS Passive Tracking Tether, Breathalyzer Monitor, Ignition Interlock, Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM). Electronic Monitoring to me is just another way the law enforcement, probation/ parole officers can keep an close eye on the defendants. House arrest is not always effective to me or it is not always a good example of electronic monitoring because it doesn’t comply with the rules of electronic monitoring meaning if the offender is ordered not to drink smoke or whatever else how will they know when he/ she has broken the rules of electronic monitoring. (self). Electronic Monitoring is just another alternative to incarceration or it will just be another way to prevent overcrowding in the jails and to cut back on costs.
