The fight for Abortion: Pro-Choice My Body My Decision.
Abortion is a highly debated issue in the United States today, as well as in 1971 with the famous Roe vs. Wade case that struck the United States Government. This issue is an arising debate that keeps coming up in presidential elections, in the news mass media, and in women’s everyday lives. Abortion is a major issue that cannot be taken lightly because it revolves around women’s lives and their bodies. “Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion of a fetus or embryo from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death” (Hoffer) Women, who have been victims of rape, cannot afford a child at the time, and not ready to be a parent, and many other reasons as well, should have the right to an abortion. “Nearly all abortions take place in the first trimester, when a fetus cannot exist independent of the mother. As it is attached by the placenta and umbilical cord, its health is dependent on her health, and cannot be regarded as a separate entity as it cannot exist outside the whom” (Randy 1). Women should have the right to choose when to have an abortion is she is a victim of being rape, living in poverty, and if she is not ready to become a mother, because it is their body.
Pro-Choice is favoring or supporting the legal right of women and girls to choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy to term (Romulus). Women should have the right to choose whether or not she should have an abortion, or if she should keep the child. "It is the status of the fetus that appears to be at the center of the controversy. In the first trimester of pregnancy, an embryo is clearly pre-human; only the mystical notions of religious dogma treat this clump of cells as constituting a person. And, with this infliction of religious beliefs on others, as mentioned earlier, begins the slippery slope to infringing on others religious freedom” (Hoffer). When it comes down to if a woman should have a child or if she should keep the chil because of a health. Sometimes people fail to realize the condition of the mother. People try to find what’s best for the child, instead of asking the mother what is best for her. The right to choose goes along with the first Amendment in the United States Constitution “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” (1 Amendment). This is saying everyone has the freedom of speech; therefore women have the right to choose if she would like to have an abortion or keep her child, or for her to be Pro-choice or Pro-Life.
Having the power to choose for her own body. Relates with women who have been victims of being raped, or a forceful sexual act. “Rape, forcing a women made pregnant by this violent act would cause future harm to the victim. Often a woman is too afraid to speak up or unaware she is pregnant, thus the morning after pill is ineffective in these situations” (Randy 5). When a woman has been raped or has been forced in a sexual act, a woman’s mind is disturb. She is still in shock of what has happened. Most women often think about or say I may never be a victim of being raped until it actually happens to her. Her body has been tampered with in a way that she is not pleased with. After she was raped or forced into a sexual act, she finds out that she is pregnant with someone else’s child. Women in this case should have the right to choose to have an abortion or keep the child. She would not want to be in a predicament where the child would remind her of being raped or forced into a sexual act. If a woman decides to keep her child after her horrible circumstance and she tells her child “your father raped me and I do not know who he is”. Telling those words to a child can be hard for her and heartbroken to the child at the same time.
Being Pro-Choice in the case of living in poverty is not a decent condition for a woman. Therefore she would not want to bring her child up in a poor condition. A poor mother not being able to provide food, clothes, and proper care for her child. In a situation like poverty a woman is not able to keep her child she must have the right to choose to have an abortion. A woman must have this right because she is doing the child a favor and herself because if she cannot provide for her child in the proper way, child protective services would dismiss the child from her care. If she chooses to have an abortion, she will not have to worry about negative situations that can happen to her or her child. It’s just like if a person is at a pet store and he or she see a puppy he or she cannot take the puppy home. If he or she knows he or she cannot afford to give it the proper care. The same care conditions go for a child who has not been born. If a woman feels she is not able to take care of the child, why would she bring the child in the world'
There are many women who find themselves not ready to be a parent with pro-choice you can have that right to terminate or keep a child. “Teenagers who become mothers have grim prospects for future. They are much more likely to leave school; receive inadequate prenatal care; rely on public assistance to raise a child, develop health problems, or end up divorced” (Randy 9). There are several cases when a woman is not ready to be a parent. Certain situations may occur where she has no control over. “Women who take contraception, pregnancy can still occur because the contraception is only 99.99% accurate. Women that are taking the pill because she does not want to bare child; an ends up pregnant must have the right to an abortion” (Hoffer). A woman must have the right to choose to have an abortion due to the contraception that she was taking was not effective enough for her body. Another situation that can occur is a woman can be intoxicated and she is not in the right state of mind to make accurate decisions. She makes a decision that is beyond her control, then after she finds out she is pregnant. Women must have the right to choose to have an abortion because at the time her actions were far beyond her control. And she was not in the right state of mind to make a decision so delicate as to have sexual relations with another person. In the case she ends up pregnant and she was not ready to become a mother due to her actions and not being in the right state of mind because alcohol was involved, she should have a choice if she wants to have an abortion.
“Abortion is a safe medical procedure. The vast majority of women are 88% who have an abortion do so in their first trimester. Medical abortions have less than 0.5% risk of serious complications and do not affect a women’s health or future ability to become pregnant or give birth” (Randy 4). Unsafe abortions have killed many people. Unsafe abortions were illegal and harmful because the person giving the abortion was not giving a safe procedure. Abortions that are not being cared for properly can not only kill a child but a woman. An abortion can be a safe procedure if women have the right to an abortion no matter the circumstance. If women have the right to choose to have an abortion she will not have to worry about “back alley abortions” (Brown pp105) that are not safe which may damage a women’s body or even result in her death. If a woman has the right to pro-choice she would not have to worry about a procedure going wrong because the procedure will be legal and safe.
Women in all places go through a lot of negative situations. Some women go through a little to nothing, and some are more than others. Women in the early 1900’s did not have the right or choice to voice their opinions on abortion matters that they felt women needed to speak on, or hear the matter of. Now is the time for women to have the pervilage to speak up. Women should have the right to choose to have an abortion because it is her body. Now is the time change for women to be pro-choice and voice her opinion when it comes to her own body. Pro-Choice is the best answer because it is her body and her choice. Women must have the choice to have an abortion when victim of being raped, living in poverty, and when a women is not ready to become a mother, because it is her body. Giving the choice for women to choose her own decision rather it be right or wrong applies to the first amendment of the United States Constitution, freedom of speech. Women make their own choices. It is her body, choice and own decision.
