Week 2 Assignment: Prison Term Policy Recommendation Proposal Robin Wilke CJA/314 March 4, 2013 Judy Brandeis Prison Term Policy Recommendation Proposal The information in this paper is designed to state the many reasons as to why sanctions are made and the reasons for enforcing them. Regardless of whether the reasoning is apart from the attitudes of the readers and government officials, one's personal opinions on what is needed to be done in order to reduce the amount of armed robberies needs to be told. The definition of robbery: consists of one or more people taking valuables or personals items with force and without permission from the owner. Before making any suggestions one needs to come to a realization that this new proposed bill may not lesson these crimes. Criminals will always find ways to carry out their crimes. An alternative could be to administer better programs to the criminal justice system. In order to deter crime, one needs to get a better understanding of why the crimes are being committed. Although Criminologists will never find all the causes of why crimes are committed they would be able to narrow it down. One can also take it upon themselves to look up information from the Unified Crime Report System (UCRS), the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and other criminal data sites from the United States. One could see the crime rates that we as a society are facing with today and how as a criminologist one can beat down crime in the United States. With doing research for this bill it has come to my attention that there are more armed robberies than any other crimes committed in the United States. If one were to look at different ways to deter robbery we would be able to address them accordingly. Also by looking at previous years on how the United States has dealt with these crimes and compared them to how it is being dealt with today. With each state, the punishment for robbery is different and has their own laws as to how they handle this type of crime. Robbery is considered a violent offense across the whole country. The manner in which a criminal is sentenced can make a world of difference. For example: in New York City a person that is caught and charged with a class b felony for armed robbery can face up to five years in jail, but when comparing this to the State of Georgia a criminal may spend up to 20 years in jail without the option parole unless he or she has completed the minimum of 10 years. One must also take look at the different classes of robbery. A simple robbery charge would consist of taking someone else belongings without the use of a weapon. Armed robbery is when a weapon is used and aggravated robbery is by force or intimidation with the use of a deadly weapon. Criminals that commit the act of robbery will either face imprisonment, probation, and fines. One also has to take in account the person criminal record. If a person is a career criminal and has faced two or more robbery charges then he or she will be the best candidate for a doubled sentence. The reason I am making this recommendation is because it is obvious that he or she has not learned their lesson from their last sentence and feel that causing pain and suffering to another brings them pleasure. Another reason for my recommendation is to keep these particular criminals off the street and from harming future citizens. I believe all the states should be allowed to charge them double time if the criminals carry repetitive sentences. The criminal justice system should also institute a form of rehabilitation for first time offenders for armed robbery. If the offender has a drug addiction they will be introduced to the drug rehabilitation program. The criminal justice system can also introduce them to educational training, work experience, counseling, and other programs that helps inmates give back to society. My recommendation for such programs is because inmates that commit crimes should know that he or she will be penalized by the criminal justice system. However, in order for the sentence or punishment to be carried out the offender must complete all necessary steps that comply with the criminal justice programs. Other methods that can be used to control crime is placing police officers in designated areas, known as hot spots, and installing cameras to roam the streets. This will help to deter criminals from committing acts like armed robbery. I also believe that there are many ways that one can go about sentencing these criminals for robbery. I think that we need throw away the traditional ways and look ahead to keep inmates in prison for committing these heinous crimes. By keeping these criminals in prison it will make society feel safer. We should also look into building bigger prisons when the new bill is implemented. However, when this new change comes into effect, the criminal justice system will be better prepared in how to handle criminals that commit crimes of armed robbery. I think that my superior would appreciate the decisions that I have made. I think it would make my superior rethink the alternative options the legislature has when trying to make laws to help society safer and better. With all the decisions taken into consideration, I am sure the state legislature will make the best decision for the future of the residents who reside here. I would also indicate that I am all for double sentencing for armed robbery convicts that have committed the act more than once.
