Research Problem and Purpose
According to "United States Department Of Labor: Our Mission" (2012), they are designed “to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.” The purpose of this research is to identify and highlight areas of unethical issues in the workplace in regards to discrimination.
Finding a Solution
Equal pay and compensation discrimination have become a topic of concern in our country. People are getting paid less for doing the same job as someone who is a different gender, race, ethnicity, and lives in a different location. Research is needed to determine which factors affect who and how salary differs in these different categories. Diversity is in need of improvement and/or complete development and in turn improves equality among the employees to be treated fairly by work experience, years of experience, salary, and level of education. Not by color, age, nationality, and/or gender.
This department must evaluate different businesses to assure the rights of the American workers. The department has a dilemma with the disparity of wages between age, race, gender and location. A research study is necessary to analyses if the current wages are significantly different based on these elements. The research team developed question for this study.
Research Questions and Variables
1. What categories does the research team collect data from to reflect income based on age, race, gender and location'
2. How does experience and education affect the income in each category'
There are many variables that can factor into this study. The research team has identified the dependent variable as years of experience and education. If males with the same education as females make more in the work place, what is the reason for difference in income' The data in this research may not tell the whole story. We can look at the numbers but the problem is that we don't know if someone's income is higher because they have been there longer or maybe they work harder or put in more effort. We can only look at the numbers and decide if it shows a large difference between the different groups with income and assume that it is because of race or gender. To make the research effective we would have to find our details of each employee’s history and group them accordingly.
Research Design
The research team will be using the quantitative method for our research design because we are comparing the relationship between the different data collected. We are looking to figure out the difference between the level of experience and the salary depending on race, gender, equal pay, and locality; not to mention, the Federal Laws that protect compensation.
A descriptive study is best used for quantitative research. We need to collect data in large amounts. To get the best data to compare we would need to collect data responses. This gives us the ability to see a pattern in the different responses and accurately come up with a conclusion to our research. In this study we have to use three groups.
The subjects we will be using are race, gender, location and laws with an inclusive look at the underlying problems. The variable will be background education or years of experience. Correctional would not work in this study because the variable cannot be manipulated. Developmental research method would also not work in this case because we are not looking at the growth between any variables. The team has identified and included the levels of measurement in this study.
Sampling
Team D has chosen to use the Simple Random Sampling Method. This method comes from Probability sampling. “Probability sampling is a controlled, randomized procedure that assures that each population element is given a known, nonzero chance of selection.” (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). This is the best method for our research study because with simple random sampling, every element in the population has an equal chance of being selected. (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). In this study, our team will group the elements into a category. The categories will be gender, race, age, and location. Once the elements are grouped random sampling will be used to select the elements that will be evaluated. One the elements are chosen, income will be averaged for each category. Then the team will evaluate the results of the elements in each category to determine if experience is a determining variable in this study.
Team D believes that the appropriate sample size should be ten participants from each category. The categories are as follows: gender, location, age, and race. This would give us the adequate data we need to come up with a result without making the research expensive.
The statistical test we chose to use is ANOVA because it gives us the ability to compare the differences and relationships between numbers of groups. This works for our situation because we have a number of factors that we need to consider.
The team has decided that the best way if displaying the results is the boxplot presentation. This is because of the detail that the research involves and the different variables. A median value would work for this because once we gathered information we could come up with such a number. The results would be best displayed with the consideration of outliers because the data is not necessarily “cut and dry”.
Ethical Considerations
Gender inequity is the biased conduct of a perception based on gender. This kind of discrimination is particularly pandemic in the subject of employment, where promotion, occupation, salary and other benefits incline to be gender biased.
Women regarded as not as much “privileged" than men in educational and job-related opportunities. Males, on the other hand, are stereotyped as the "stronger minded" gender. In fact, many laws that exist today, particularly those that encompass the family, are supportive of women.
For the reason of gender issues, men and women both have received disparaging treatment within the workplace and society as a whole. Effects of gender discrimination include unemployment, low wages, insecurity and low self-esteem. A moral and preventative resolution is counteracting the incessant gender discrimination in the place of employment. The increasing number of employers has adopted a zero tolerance policy for any kind of gender discrimination. In the United States, the Equal Pay Act was included in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This prohibits any type of discrimination, including gender discrimination.
