TITLE: ANALYTICAL FACTSHEET ON PREJUDICE & DISCRIMINATION ON WORKPLACE DISCRIMINATION SECTION I - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY First of all there is a law against discrimination against age and gender if you feel that you have been discriminated against one of those areas. I urged everybody to bring that matter up to the person you interviewed with or lawyer that stand for the employee. There are also outstanding people who represent the employee or the lawyer that stand for the company. Whenever you find that you have been discriminated against age or gender. Please make sure that you have a case that is valid. You have furnished with or supported by documents, everything that is spoken to you about. Make sure you have a case that you have the documents or references supplied about what you want to claim and this is a very sensitive issue. Company should be aware of the law that protects people against age discrimination and gender discrimination. SECTION II - THE ISSUES AND WHO ARE INVOLVED I am writing about workplace discrimination. Workplace discrimination is a biased or unequal treatment of a person or persons in the workplace based upon their age, gender, race, ethnic origin, pregnancy, impairment, or medical condition impairment, or medical status. Workplace discrimination can also be in a form of discrimination in hiring, opportunity, commission, promotion and compensation. It includes various types of harassment. Discrimination is not tolerable in this day but unluckily workplace discrimination may occur with intention or without intention, because of prejudice or the lack of knowledge or education. Discrimination is alive not only in our workplaces but it can also happen even in schools and communities. I have chosen this particular area because everyone may be facing discrimination at work every day, if you happen to be the wrong race, the wrong gender, the wrong age or even if you are pregnant. Those people who have impairment, or medical condition impairment, or medical condition face tremendous discrimination due to their condition. While the workplace should be free of discrimination, but often it is not. We all know that it is biased and still discrimination carry on. Feelings of discrimination can be subjective. Many cases of workplace discrimination go unreported every day. Many people do not raise up with complaints as they fear that their employer or the person who is discriminating against them will take revenge and harass them. Stereotype is an oversimplified view held to categorize traits to an entire group. When we stereotype a group of people, we describe all of the individuals within that group as having the same feature. Common stereotype in the workplace are age stereotype, gender stereotype, medical or disability stereotype and race or religious Beliefs stereotype. SECTION III - WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR US TO DISCUSS' Age discrimination The law prohibits discriminating against someone in the workplace based on his or her age. I want to give a short introductory by saying there are particular type of jobs that require certain human labor and the employer may discriminate base on the truth that the person is physically impaired to do the task. Sometimes a job may require you to lift heavy objects, so if the job description is restricting you base upon your age, or your ability to perform some physical act. The employer can then choose not to hire you based on your inability to perform a specific task. But unfair treatment of a person based on age is not justified according to the law. Gender discrimination Gender discrimination can occur in a workplace which is typically dominated by either males or females. When the employer hires a worker, they may have preferences for a certain sex. Stereotyping a group of people based on their gender is a matter that needs to be brought to attention. A female can be as equally competent as a male. A certain job example would be doing electrical work on the power line. It might appear that this job is better suited for men, but there are actually women who are trained for this kind of work. SECTION IV - WHERE CAN WE START TO FIX THE PROBLEM' Age discrimination There is going to be a job shortage or employee shortage. Combining the post secondary, diploma, degree and post-graduate together, our projections show a job shortage of about 350,000 positions until 2009 ("Manpower challenges to," 2004). Having skill, ability and positive attitude, I encourage everybody to express in your interviews that you are proficient, flexible, willing to learn and will perform well. You will follow orders and communicate well and you are a team player. By doing that you impress the employer with the skill you bring, the value you bring, and then hoping that will overcome any age discrimination in workplace. But I do believe in the future, the employer will seek qualified workers with sufficient experience that will be needed in the workplace. Gender discrimination As years pass, you might remember a female teacher. As time passes by there have been excellent male teachers who would have worked in a vibrant class setting. We want to ensure that there is no stereotyping based on gender. There is the emergence of male nurses unlike in the past where the typical nurse was female. The employer should hire people based on their abilities and not be prejudiced about their gender. Everyone should be given an equal opportunity.
