Week 2 Assignment: Prejudice and Discrimination in South Africa Deborah Frederick SOC/120 July 15, 2012 Judith Levin Week 2 Assignment: Prejudice and Discrimination in South Africa South Africa is mostly comprised of Ethnic Africans, which makes up makeup 79% of the total population, of these the Zulu and Xhosa make up the two largest groups. The other 21% of the population are split up as follows: Whites 9.6% (Dutch and English), mixed ancestary 9%, Asians 2% (Indians and Malaysians), and the other .4% of the population is undocumented. Forth percent of the South African population live in rural areas. There are 11 official languages of South Africa: English, Zulu, Venda, Tswana, Xhosa, Pedi, Tsonga, Swazi, Bdebele, Afrikaans, Sotho. All of these languages are considered Bantu. Many South Africans speak English as a second language. (“South Africa: ETHNIC groups MEDICAL care POLITICAL parties VITAL statistics,” 1999).  A strong academic paragraph must have five to seven sentences. You need an introductory sentence, three detail sentences and a strong conclusion/transition sentence. Sixty-eight percent of the religious groups are considered Christians. These religious groups break down into the Luthern, Dutch Reform, Catholic, and Anglican denominations. Education in South Africa has come a long way since the fall of the apartheid. Education is mandatory for 10 years beginning at the age of 7-years-old and can be in any of the country’s languages. (Aliprandini, 2011).  Private schools are available if one is able to afford it. This paragraph requires stronger development. While health care has improved in South Africa, there are still many illnesses that are predominant in the poorer classes of the ethnic African, in these classes infant mortality is still high and life expectancy is low. Many of the illnesses that affect the lower classes are malaria, measles, TB, and HIV/AIDS. There are more than 20,000 plants that have been identified in South Africa and there is only 1% of forest area in the total region. There are also many different species of wildlife that exist in South Africa: of these are the elephants, baboons, monkeys, lions, zebras, and the white rhinocerous, just to name a few. The economy of South Africa still has a long way to go and still has many problems to tend to. The unemployment rate is 23.3% and the average income is $10,700 USD per year. Only 12% of land is farmable and the major crops are wheat, corn, vegetables, citrus fruits, and grapes. South Africa was divided into four racial categories: Africans, Whites, Coloreds, and Asians, up until 1991 and still think of themselves that way even today. The ethnic groups are broken down as suck; Whites 14%, Coloreds 9%, Asians 2%, and Africans 75%. Even though the schools are now desegregated in South Africa, restructuring of the school system still has a long way to go. The distinction between race and ethnicity has been a common debate among many different people and cultures however, they are defined as such: race is defined as a group of people based on their geographic history, nationality, or history that they have in common. Ethnicity is defined as a group of people who have a common culture, religion, linguistic, or territorial traits, physical or genetic traits. The apartheid laws were introduced in 1948 which allowed racial discrimination to be legal. This affected the South Africans in that Whites and non-Whites could not inter-marry. The African National Congress and the Pan-African Congress fought apartheid through guerilla warfare and sabotage after being forced underground in the early 1960’s.  (Kruger, 2012).  The Population Registration Act was induced into law in 1950 thereby making it mandatory for all residents of South Africa to be racially classified. The original intention of the apartheid was for the Whites to maintain domination. (Seekings, 2008).  Some of the effects of discrimination can be seen in residential areas where there has been little or no racial integration. The only real form of inter-racial interaction comes in the form of schools for middle-class children. The situation in South Africa, the apartheid, and the down fall of the apartheid has caused many people to change their cultures and their way of living, leading to a new culture of people that changes with every passing day. Despite all of the prejudice and discrimination that this country has had to tolerate over the decades there are many wonderful tourism sites to see and places to experience what one cannot in any other country. The top 8 sites to visit and experience are: 1. The Num-Num Trail 2. Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge 3. Grape-Escapes in the Winelands 4. Soweto Township Tours 5. The Wild Coast in South Africa 6. The Blyde River Canyon Reserve 7. African-inspired Treatments 8. Traditional African Food Please remember to include in-text citations in your writing. The Num-Num Trail was designed by South African trail experts in 2010 and is rapidly becoming a great spot to visit for both locals and international hikers. This trail is a 5 day journey that is 36.5km or 22.63 miles, approximately. During this 5 day journey one experience various landscapes such as gorges, mountains, streams, grasslands, waterfalls, and indigenous forest. Camping consist of indoor and outdoor braai or grilling areas, hot water, and shared ablutions or washing facilities. During this hike you travel the Bladdernut Trail, Milkplum Path, Pom-Pom Way, then back to Pongola Express Camp to pick up your vehicle and be on your way to the next great adventure of Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge. Hainertsburg, which is located in the Magoebakloof region, features the Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge. This lodge, also known as “The Garden of Eden”, is the place to visit for business men and women or anyone else who needs to de-stress. This lodge is situated on the Drakensberg escarpment and features views of the Lowveld and other areas. Once one has had the opportunity to de-stress and get back to basics it is off to the Grape-escapes in the Winelands. This adventure offers hands-on entertainment, or should I say feet-on entertainment. Tourists are encouraged to roll up their trouser legs and go grape stomping to their hearts content. Grape-escapes also offers horseback riding to the Breede River or one can ride to the highest point that overlooks the Robertson Valley. It also offers tractor rides for the children and a place to create your own verjuice and vinegar and spitbraai (barbeque). After barbequing and relaxing, the next place to visit would be the Soweto Township Tour. This tour is specifically set up to allow tourists to experience the South African struggle for freedom. This tour explains the history of the South African struggles, the vibrant social scene, and the exciting nightlife, after which it is off to the next adventure of the Wild Coast in South Africa. The Wild Coast stretches from the Mtamuwna River to the Great Kei River. This area is most known for its’ Ancient forests that features cycads, yellowwood trees, bird and animal life. After exploring the Wild Coast it is off to the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. The nature reserve features 2,500m of red sandstone and geological sites. This canyon is the 3rd largest on Earth. Once through exploring the many different places it is time to relax at one of the African-inspired treatment spas. The top three treatment spas are the Falaza, the Fordoun, and the Manguanani. These spas feature more than `120 healing plants, therapy rooms, consulting rooms, massage rooms, and Body Exfoliation. Now that one is relaxed and well pamplered it is off to experience the delicious traditional African foods. Traditional African food is prepared over an open fire or inside a three-legged pot. Most traditional African meals feature meat, a starch, which can be potatoes or rice, and vegetables, which include but are not limited to beetroot, carrots, cabbage, or pumpkin. South African dishes typically include morogo, chakalaka, tripe, and amadumbe. These are just a few of the many attractions that exist in South Africa and a must see for those able to visit this beautiful country.
