Determining your Prefect Position Leadership style is a essential factor to motive and maintain employees’ productiveity. Leaders establish direction by developing a vision of the future; then they align people by communicating this vision and inspiring them to overcome hurdles" (Robbins & Judge, 2006, p.2) Leader of a team should be able to create a vision for other to follow, commendate corporate values and ethics and improve the team’s effectiveness and efficiency. Good leaders are able to motivate employees and build up a better working environment for the team. As the leader of a team, manager’s leadership style has a great deal of influence on the team’s effectiveness. The method a manager leading and treating the employees will determine how employees feel about he or her. Employees who respect and trust their leader are more likely willing to listen and be motivated. Leadership Style Strengths and Weaknesses According to the Leadership and Team Skills Assessments, I has to maintain a better balance between concern of people and task. In the leadership style assessment, I got a score of five (5) and two (2) in concern of people section and concern of task respectively, which means I trend to be more task-oriented. There are chances that I would be actocratic, therefore I will need to concern more regarding employees. In the How charismatic I am assessment, I got over sixteen (16) points in most sections, including management of attention, meaning, trust, self, risk and feeling, which means I am able to demonstrate charismatic leader behaviors. In the Do I trust others assessment, I was tested as a person with high-faith in people, which means I can be people-oriented. So I will need to focus more on concern of employees. In the How good I am at disciplining others and How good am I at building and leading a team assessments, I got relatively high score, that I have skills at disciplining employees and am capable of building and leading a team. Compared and Contrasted Leadership Theories There are different leadership theories. I am going to compare and contrast the Trait Theories and Behavioral Theories. Trait Theories “The trait theories of leadership focus on personal characteristics of the leader.” (Robbins & Judge, 2006) So people would describle the leaders with certain wordings, such as charismatic, enthusiastic, or courageous. “Traits can predict leadership” (Robbins & Judge, 2006), which means people considering a person as leader only based on his or her trait. However, it is not necessary that the person is a effective leader. Behavioral Theories Behavioral Theories bascially means people exhibiting leaders by their behaviors. If a person fulfilled a list of requirements and characters of a leader’s role, then he or she would be idenified as a leader. Base on the above information, two theories shared a relatively simailar concept, which the conclusion is mainly according to people’s observation. This can be very personal and subjective. However, the “observation object” of these two theories are different. Personal Leadership Style Model I am what is considered a participative leader. My leadership style included others in the decision making process. This leadership style shows a open-minded working environment so employees are encouraged to express their ideas and feelings. Participative leadership style leaders also trend to empower employees more, which employees can make decisions to certain extent by themselves. This process greatly helps leaders to gain employees’ respect. Moreover, participative leaders also pay efforts to motive employees, not only achieving team goals but developing employees’ potentials. “Measure of leader effectiveness is the extent to which the leader’s organizational unit performs its task successfully and attains its goals" (Yuki, 2006). One’s Effective Position There was a manager I known of, he has a controlling style of leadership. He could not empowered his employees because he thought that his ideas, methods and experience are the best for the team. He could not trust his employees. So there was no ideas from employees, they could just follow his order. Although his team finished every task assigned on time, but the turnover rate was the highest in the corporation. And the company actually lost a lot of capable employees because they felt that they could not use or develop their knowledge and skills under this type of leadership. Summary As a leader, managers not only need to understand their employees, but also need to understand their own leadership style, strengths and weaknesses.
