The struggle to attain greater military power over an opposing force has many negative impacts on a community, which results in conflicts and battles in order to ascertain the dominance over another community, force or individuals. This leaves one side to withhold the power and the other side being powerless in stopping them, which is exemplified by the newspaper article Six soldiers among ten dead in Iraq. In this article, it illustrates that the terrorists are taking desperate measures to ascertain greater military power over the Iraq army. This consequently results in many soldiers and policemen being killed to establish fear and intimidation within the Iraqi army by the terrorists, in an attempt to persuade Iraq to surrender through violent malicious intentions. It is shown that military power can lead to greed and selfishness for power, which push the terrorists to cause harm, to intimidate and to bring about fear to their victims in order to portray themselves as formidable and powerful. It is epitomised that power can have both negative or positive effects on individuals or a community.
However, having total military power over a community is portrayed as being difficult to attain. This act of gaining complete military power over another force is exemplified in the article. However, the terrorists in the article are conveyed as being militarily powerful through their brutal and ruthless violent attacks on the Iraqi army. This evokes fear and intimidation, which helps them to attain full military power over the Iraqi army. However, it is evidently shown that despite the aggression shown by the terrorists, they do not fully attain military dominance over the Iraqi army.
The idea of struggling to attain greater political or military power is evident throughout both texts Six soldiers among ten dead in Iraq and A Hard God. In A Hard God, the struggle to attain political power is exemplified through the violent acts of physical power, which results in Martin being pushed off an edge of a dam by a group of communists, which shows their desperate measures that they take to ascertain their influence amongst its community. This struggle for political power renders the communist party politically powerless as they perform desperate measures to maintain their influence within its community. Similarly, the struggle for the terrorists to overpower the Iraqi army renders them physically and militarily powerless, which compels them to take desperate measures in order to ascertain their dominance over the Iraqi army, resulting in violent deaths and destruction.
The emotive language that is cleverly employed by the composer expresses the harsh invectives showing the negative effects that military power can have on humans. Phrases such as “shot dead” and “killed in a terrorist attack” bring about fear and intimidation within the reader, (connoting) which connotes some of the detrimental effects that military power can have on a community. From the effects of emotive language, a fearful and a concerned tone is established that conveys the negative impacts that military power can have on humans. From the emotive language, a fearful tone is established within the responder, connoting some of the detrimental effects of greed for military power. This can lead to many communities or individuals to be rendered powerless as a consequence. As a result of the fearful tone, emotional appeal is created within the responder, as words such as “terrorist attack” and “deadliest attack” brings about negative but powerful connotations of how military power can be manipulated.
Throughout the article, authorities are employed to show that military power can have adverse effects on humanity, but it also shows (also showing) the positive effects that military power can have throughout a community. Throughout the article, ruthless and violent acts of military power is portrayed as depraved but however, it can also be portrayed as being the security for many communities making them feel safer. Peace-keeping authorities such as “Lieutenant Colonel WalidSulaiman Al- heeti” show how military power can not only be a negative influence on a community, but it is shown to provide security and become a refuge for some communities. It is evidently shown that being militarily powerful not only has deleterious effects on humanity, but it is also shown that it can be a refuge in times of war in a country.
