Chosen To Be
Surrounded in a city where crime rates are high and crime is all you witness, it is unbearable to get away from crime. Sometimes people intend to do crime because that is all they see their whole life and they do not think it is wrong because everyone does it, like Buchanan (author of the essay How People Turn Monstrous) says “Can a person be guilty of a crime if almost everyone, except a few heroic types, would have done the same thing'” (385). If a person is raised in a violent family and sees everything, then most likely when he grows up he will commit similar actions. Criminals are not always as they seem, sometimes criminals react to situations using emotions, sometimes criminals have no choice because they are desperate and forced to the lifestyle, and sometimes attention and peer pressure can lead to these criminals doing dangerous actions and committing crimes; but to every single problem/situation there is always a solution that exists.
In this world, people tend to handle emotion differently and sometimes some cannot handle it, which leads some people to become a criminal and do a felony because they are jealous and/or want revenge. Having lots of enemies, people that treat you with no respect, and being humiliated by others makes people get angry and sometimes people cannot handle their stress so they end up dangerously attacking, raping, and/or murdering a victim. When people have revenge on others it makes the criminal feel much better because they think they got even with the person who they attacked, and it lowers the stress. People who cannot control their emotions will likely think of getting revenge and that leads these criminals into committing crime. Like in the essay Revenge the motive for rape, murder by Sharifah Mahsinah Abdullah says “What is even more shocking is that the man is believed to have raped and murdered Nurul Anira Che Rosik simply because he wanted revenge against her mother for "repeatedly humiliating him in public"(17). Also some criminals cannot control their emotion of jealousy and that can make these criminals get angry because they get jealous of the luxuries that others have or jealous of their love relationship and that leads them into robbing store and committing crimes such as murder, rape, and attack people in dangerous ways. Like the author of the essay Jealousy led to attack by Kolberg, Adam says “A 38-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 months jail for taking a brick to the head of her partner and aunt, after discovering them in bed together.” (4). Jealousy and not controlling your emotions can become a very big reason to why people commit crimes, and though it makes the criminal feel better; it will affect them in many ways like serving a prison term, and loosing friends and family members.
When people have the lack of discipline and where people are brought up can lead to no choice, but to commit crimes; because they are forced to the lifestyle of criminals and cannot escape it. Those who are in struggling families and do not make enough to support themselves end up having to commit crimes because they think they have no other choice and are desperate. Like in the essay Poor are driven to acts of Desperation by Renu [no last name given] he states that “It is myopic to presume that under-privileged people are less principled than the average wage earner. It is undeniable that they are driven by circumstances and need, not greed, to commit crimes of desperation.”(19). People who are desperate are likely to commit crimes such as stealing and robbing local stores. Knowing they are desperate and have a family to look out for and cannot think of a solution but to rob a place or steal is reasons why these individuals engage in criminal activities instead of living a fair and honorable life because they are forced to the lifestyle.
Pressure can lead to people engaging in crime and knowing that you can make more friends doing crimes and get attention of people can make them [criminals] feel better. Lots of times, people who are not popular end up joining gangs or eventually doing bitter crimes to get noticed by other and to protect themselves. Peer pressure can cause a lot of stress and that is a big reason why people chose crime over the normal life. Stress from parents, family, jobs, and peer groups can make these individuals do crime, like in the essay Man lured back to Crime by Watkins, Emily where a man was forced to do crime to pay back his uncle because he was in debt from him [uncle]. Individuals can hold only some amount of stress but eventually people break and cannot handle the stress, so they do not know what to do; eventually they try to take the easy way out by committing crimes. Not having help from adults, and having relationship problems can get stress and anger out which can lead to people hurting themselves and even others in many ways.
Although there are enormous amounts of reasons why people commit crimes there are always solutions. One solution is to better control emotions, as young kids grow up, have them learn to control emotions and to learn self respect and especially to respect others. Teaching kids while they are in elementary schools, to respect and control emotions, and to never be desperate enough to hurt others, because there is always a way but you have to figure it out. Also if a person still cannot handle their emotions then they can take an anger management class or therapy, and learn different types of styles to keep themselves in control and to know how to calm themselves down.
A solution to controlling stress and handling peer pressure would be, to be proud of who you are and do not care about how people judge you. If you cannot control stress then you can always go to a stress relieving class and learn to take control of your stress. While as peer pressure, have schools teach kids to learn how to get away from peer pressure, and to have lessons on ignoring peer pressure while they are young and teach them to get out of positions where they would have difficulty getting out off, especially positions that involve loosing friends. Another solution is to talk to find an adult/parent who is willing to help you out of any problems and to make sure to ask them for help whenever it is necessary.
Solutions to desperation can be getting more finances to the poor and to make minimum wages higher so people have enough to support their families and have extra in case of emergencies. Having more finances to help out the poor would keep crime rates lower because less people would be desperate and they would not have to sacrifice hurting others to help their own family. Another way is to have better education in the poorer schools and to teach them better and make sure they learn to do the best in life and not go towards the bad side. Other ways to make sure people do not commit crimes are to raise the penalty of pity thefts, like if a person gets caught stealing instead of a one year sentence have a three to five year sentence that will scare people from doing crimes.
Committing crime can relieve all your worries and make you feel as if you are gone away from your problems. Typically it does not mean that is the only way to get away from your problems and it can cause a lot more problems such as getting arrested and given a death penalty. These individuals who chose crime over any other solution will come to know that there is more problems caused in committing crimes because if you are relieved from money problems, then you will have another problem and so on, eventually you will get caught and have no way out but to go to jail and spend your life in jail thinking about what you could have done differently.
