Personal Values Abstract My value system assists me in understanding and making decisions about issues that matter to me and sometimes, judge with preconceived notion because, as humans we tend to make conclusions we believe are correct. Personal values can also say a lot about a person’s up-bringing, in that people may judge others based on their notions and their behaviors to come to the conclusion about that person’s background. Social values may or may not be ethically agreeable by cultural standards because values are an individual’s perspective. What are Values' Values are convictions, ideas, and beliefs that represent what you stand for and these values have an important effect on your way of living. These values could have an impact on your personal views on people’s actions, religion, and your environment in a manner that could either be equal or different from the values of others. Personal values can range from your beliefs that are based on personal integrity, dedication, respect, courage, morals, learning, generosity, and many others that could embody an individual’s framework. My Personal Values I believe that my personal values identify the type of person I have become and that my beliefs and my actions are a by-product of the many people and experiences that have been extremely influential to my development. For instance, religion, family, friends, teachers, coworkers, and people in general, have all impacted my beliefs in a way that have molded me into a person of integrity, loyalty, and dedication. Personal values can also say a lot about a person’s up-bringing, in that people may judge others based on their notions and their behaviors to come to the conclusion about that person’s background. Social values may or may not be ethically agreeable by cultural standards because values are an individual’s perspective. My value system assists me in understanding and making decisions about issues that matter to me and sometimes, judge with preconceived notion because, as humans we tend to make conclusions we believe are correct. The results of my Ethics Awareness Inventory assessment describes me as an individual most closely aligned with “Obligation” and least aligned with “Equity”. Each one of us follows those values we find to be important to our daily living, and these values may or may not be acceptable agreed by others because we are expected to react and to behave in a manner that is approved, regardless of how we feel about a situation. Living and choosing you own set of values will help define and display your true moral fiber. Social Values Society also has some influence upon my beliefs in that I am expected to think and to behave in a certain way. Your personal principles are those ideas and beliefs that are important to you and have a huge impact in your actions towards people in any situation, and this is becomes a challenge when you choose to depart from your true beliefs in order to appeal to rules and expectations in society. By acknowledging and understanding society’s expectations, individuals can choose to develop their own ideas and beliefs that are based on these social values, or could choose those that are similar to their own in making life decisions. Organizational Values As members of an organization, we naturally bring our own bias, ideas, and behaviors to the organization For instance, throughout my military career I have always respected the opinions of my superiors and at times followed their instructions with some reservation but, did not hesitated to in stating my opinion if there was a situation that could endanger some one’s life or could be morally wrong, based on my standards. Because of these conflicting views, organizations establish their own policies and standards to ensure that everyone within the organization abides under organizational principles. Most organization values and mission statements are supported by standards and policies that are developed in accordance with governmental, judicial and common practice procedures that are there to provide good order and uniformity. Every organization has its own culture, which are a combination of organizational beliefs as well as the beliefs of each individual that is part of that organization. Location also has some influence on the type of culture present in that organization. For instance, a K-mart retail store in Michigan would have a different cultural environment compared to another K-mart store in the Virgin Islands, even though it is the same company with same organizational standards but, because of their location, their culture may be a little different. In the insurance industry we abide by a Code of Ethics which protects both the customer and employees, by providing guidelines of ethical behavior and measures to counteract any violations of these guidelines. Employees must be made aware of these standards through training or by communicating via any means available because non-compliance could jeopardize not only your own integrity and reputation, but that of the organization you represent. Conclusion Regardless of our upbringing, we all form our own sets of beliefs based on experiences and teachings and it is up to us to choose those beliefs that closely relate to the type of person we have or wish to become. We should also keep in mind that there will be many instances in were our beliefs will be challenged, criticized, or questioned depending on the situation and the beliefs of those involved. No matter what, you should remain true to yourself. References Pugh S., Dietz J., Brief A., Wiley J. (2008).
