Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility is a promise or an obligation to oneself. It means that you stop putting the blame on others and admitting and accepting responsibility for your own actions. In this essay, I will define the meaning of personal responsibility and how it will guide me in becoming a successful college student, and I will describe a plan that will allow me to be successful during my education. This planning should help me to alleviate stress and frustration and allow me to become a better organized student.
My definition of Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility means taking accountability for one’s actions, and accepting the consequences that result from those actions. To me, personal responsibility is when you stop blaming other individuals and start blaming yourself and see what you need to do to correct the issue while understanding what you do impacts others. You should know when you are wrong and take full responsibility for your actions. Everyone makes human errors in life, so learning to take responsibility for your own actions is detrimental in growing up and throughout your education. Personal responsibility also is the freedom to make your own choices in life so to be accountable is crucial as you are setting a career path for the future. “Part of every student’s education is learning the importance of personal responsibility and how strong character is built through a code of conduct.”
(http://www.nhaschools.com/schools/ajbrown/Our-Commitment/Student-Responsibility/Pages/Student-Responsibility.aspx) A study done by the Association of American Colleges and Universities provided information that students and faculty members in several different colleges agree that personal and social responsibility should be a primary focus in the classroom. (Antonaros,M., Antonaros, M., Barnhardt, C., Holsapple, M., Moronski, K., Vergoth, V., & Association of American Colleges and Universities, W. C. (2008). After reading this article, I never realized the impact that personal responsibility would have during my educational experience here at the University of Phoenix.
Personal Responsibility and Organization for College Success
Personal responsibility actually begins during the adolescent years when I was given advice by my parents. They gave me advice on how to handle myself in school and what was necessary to continue my education. “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands” (retrieved from

To be a responsible University of Phoenix college student, organization will be necessary for my success in school. With organization skills, I will become more proficient, and productive in my school assignments. These skills may include preparation of assignments, prioritizing workload, and scheduling of my free time. Without organization, I might become more stressed, more frustrated. I should get organized by using calendars for listing assignments and essay due dates. This will assist me in becoming a responsible student and getting the work done in a timely fashion. If I am not organized, the assignments will become messy and I will under achieve.
Time Management
I will need to balance my time wisely between school, work, and my home life. There is so many ways to acquire time management assistance, so seeking that might be a good tool. While balancing school, a job, and a household, time will be a major factor so knowing how to rearrange a schedule to suit me will be essential as my time differs from other individuals. Using time management is most important as I have a very busy schedule and need to know how to fit it all in to a twenty hour day. Work is demanding at times, and my education will be demanding as well if I wish to succeed. Attendance both in school and in the workplace will still be extremely important to me. There has to be a balance between the two. As I juggle between a forty to sixty hour work week, and still spend sufficient time for my school studies, assignments, and readings will be crucial in my preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility. Taking the time to read materials for assignments and answer discussion questions on the material read will be very time consuming as there is much to read in only a short time. Reading a chapter or two every night will be a good study habit to get into so when I am ready to answer the discussion questions the information is fresh in my head.
Setting Academic and Personal Goals
Setting goals can be an asset when trying to achieve an objective. As a current student, I might want to use goals to obtain better grades to graduate with high honors or just to create a schedule that I can feel comfortable with. College success is extremely important to me, as I want to br able to identify my goals for attaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at University of Phoenix. I want to graduate with high honors, not just pass. I want to say “I received my degree with a 3.8 GPA. If I do not complete the assignments, and retain the information I should have learned; I will not succeed and my expectations for the future will fail or be poor.
My Preliminary Plan to be Personally Responsible
Setting goals and the management of my time will be the biggest part of my plan. I intend to use my daily planner and the syllabus for my daily assignments. My planner will keep me on track of due dates, work schedules, appointments, and meetings and will help to keep me on schedule and accomplish my goals. I plan to initiate assignments in separate sessions, meaning I will break them down so I have time to think about the assignment and add to it if need be. I do not want to cram all in one day as taking the time to write down my thoughts and opinions will be very helpful. If I stay focused and maintain good study habits I can achieve my goals, learn to effectively read and practice good note and test techniques, complete timely assignments, and mainly, organization of my study area, desk, or office. No one ever said it would be easy, but these are my choices, and mine alone.
Conclusion
To become the successful student I want to be, I must adhere to my preliminary plan. I want to become a successful businesswoman and be recognized for my success in the business world. I believe if I can build this plan, I can stay motivated in my personal, educational, and professional life. I should become a more responsible person overall with more organization and less stress and frustration in my life.
