Person centred care and values. What is meant by person centred values' Person centred values and care is when services are designed to meet the needs of the individual. It enables individuals to plan and set a direction for their life. Why it is important to promote person centred care and values: It is important to promote person centred care when working in a social care setting to help build up a relationship between the care staff and the residents. Residents have regular care staff and the staff will get to know what the residents like and don’t like. The emphasis is always on the person as an individual. They get treated with dignity and respect. The residents get to keep their independence and get to live their life the way they want to. What is meant by the term consent in an adult social care setting Consent in an adult social care setting is where the individual is involved in decision making. They must be fully informed about and understand the potential benefits and the risk of their choice of care. Gaining consent in a social care setting Social workers must gain the consent of the individual when providing care and support so that dignity is maintained. The individual can keep their independence. It shows that they are valued and will make them feel good and in control. It is important that we gain consent so that all needs are met. A social worker might gain consent from an individual by verbally or written confirmation, by asking questions by giving choices. If a social worker is unable to get consent due to the individual not being able to express themselves due to mental illness or lack of mental capacity or because they are terminally ill then consent may be obtained by asking their family or next of kin. If the individual has got the mental capacity to speak for themselves but they refuse then the worker could try to encourage them and let them know the benefits of allowing the worker to assist them.
