Penitentiary and Models of the American Prison
Penitentiary and Models of the American Prison
There were so many different ideas what a penitentiary should be like by so many different people throughout the years, but for the most part it was intended to be a secular and spiritual environment. It is supposed to teach a prisoner to reflect on what they have done and have remorse of what they did and maybe feel compassing for what they have done in return maybe turn them into better citizens if they were to be released back in to the civil life. It also was supposed to be more of a humane punishment and not so much a physical punishment; it should have been a more of a certain punishment and common punishment for all the serious criminals.
In my option the principal goal for the penitentiaries was in hope to maybe rehabilitate a criminal from committing crimes into becoming a more productive citizen, to help these criminals to try to turn their life around and stop committing crimes and have some remorse for their actions and become better citizens. This should be the time for them to turn their life around and find their new spiritual begging, and take a better path in life. The penitentiary is a place for the criminals that have proven that they do not want to follow any of the rules in society; they have chosen to life our side any rules and have to live with the choices they have made in life. The principal goal of the penitentiary was to achieve the kind of spiritual transformation in a criminal being that was associated with the religious beings of the medieval monastery
There was a big difference in the two models in the American prisons, the Eastern State: Pennsylvania model was a more organized prison that housed the prisoners all in separated individual sells. Because of having all the prisoners a part from each other and no physical contact the prison was more orderly, quiet and was more controlled. The Pennsylvania model was a penitentiary to have the criminal reflect on the crime they committed and maybe with being in solitary confinement they would focus on the reflection and remorse of the crimes they committed, that is why they neither did put them to work because it was thought it would keep them from focusing on the reflection and remorse of their crimes. The only thing that wasn’t good about the Pennsylvania model is that they had to have more guards to control all the prisoners because they all had to be feed individually took more time so the more guards were needed to ensure all prisoners were all feed Around the same time. The one thing that was not a good factor was that the Pennsylvania model does costs more to build the prison due to all the prisoners getting their own cell.
The Auburn model was just a little more cost effective the Pennsylvania model it was cheaper to build this prison because you efficiently use more of the space within the walls, you are housing more than one prisoner in one cell you have a dining facility to feed all the prisoners all at the same time, this in retrospect was more cost efficient, while you did not need all the guards that the Pennsylvania model needs, and it was cheaper to build the Auburn model was more efficient all around. They tried to keep the prisoners in confinement by not letting them talk to other prisoners kept the prisoners more compliant, while enforced labor was a tool for the prison to profit and teach a prisoner the value of hard work and this was their way of rehabilitation.
As for which one was considered to be the winning model would be the Auburn model because they believed that solitary confinement was the cause of some prisoners to suffer from psychologically problems. It was believed that solitary confinement was a cruel and inhumane punishment, but most of all keeping a growing criminal population in solitary confinement was expensive to keep prisoners looked in solitary confinement and being in solitary confinement meant that they could only do individual handwork which they could not profit from as they could with a congregate prisons, which could make better profit by being able to make bigger things because they had more criminals working together.
