"When people abuse their power. The others who have been over powered feel powerless" This is shown throughout 1984, boy in striped pajamas and a newspaper article based on a current problem in our society today. In 1984, George Orwell shows many examples of how people abuse their power, and make the people who have been overpowered feel powerless. In the scene I have chosem, Winston has been tortured for weeks by O'brien, and by the end of it he feels weak and insignificant. Similary in Boy in striped pajamas The German Government puts Jews in a concentration camp, this is a form of torture leaving them feeling powerless, and in the end the German government end up killing many of the Jews. In the nespaper article the bigger business are dominating the smaller business by lowring the milk prices, leaving the farmers in a tough situation. This makes the farmers feel samll and powerless. In 1984 O'brien says to winston "Power is inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing." O'Brien believes that having power over someone else lets you control what that person thinks, and believes, as they feel weak and useless. O'brien believes the best way to gain that power is by torturing them, or inflicting pain to completely break them down. In the boy in striped pajamas the German government believe that putting Jews into concentration camps, making them work and making them live in poor conditions gives them complete power over them, and they can control their minds. In this poster I have used black to represent evil In the scene that I have chosen for boy in striped pajams, Bruno the main character decides to give up the power he has, he does this by taking off his clothes and replacing them with the striped pajamas the Jewish people at the concentration camp wear. Through The use of salience we are drawn to the fence. The fence plays a significance role in this movie. On one side of the fence you are powerful, but once youre on the other side you are completely powerless. In this shot we have the two boys, one that has power and the other who doesn’t, looking at eahother. In this image from the scene the directorh as used an eye level angle, giving us the feeling that at this point in time of the movie neither one tem feels as if the other has more or less power then the other, but the feel as if they are equal. They have also use close up during the scene on both characters giving us an idea of the emotions on their faces, during the scene the responder can tell they are both anxious and worried In the extract from 1984 O'brien asks a number rhetorical questions to Winston, as if Winston was doubting the power that O'Brien or the Party have over the people. The use of these rhetorical questions, emphasizes to Winston that the party has complete power over all people - obrien asks " But what of it' Do you suppose it is beyond us to produce a duel system of astronomy'" When o'biren says this to winston, wisnotn realises that the party have more power then h eoriginally thought. "...crushed him like a bludgeon" Through the use of simile we get the idea that Obrien makes Winston feel weak and powerless. We get an image of winston being crushed by O'Brien as he realises how much power the party has. similar in the newspaper article, when the farmers have been over poered by the samller companines they feel the same way is Winston does. The farmers feel as if the have been over powered byt the big companies, woolworths and coles. 'three years later you want to slash your wrist….theyve screwed the backside out of you" through the use of hyberbole we know the farmers are fustrated by the power the big companies have over them As you can see when people abuse their power. Those who have been overpowered feel powerless. In the three texts, O'brien, German Government and Big compaines such as woolworths and coles have all abused their power. They have over powered Jewish people, Winston or small business leaving them feeling powerless.
