Running Head: ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS Organizational Behavior Analysis: FMC Corporation Introduction & Background FMC Corporation is working in the field of manufacturing, as a world class business organization. The company operates its business, all over the globe, with the help of its sub- units, which are located at different places of the world. Two of the well -known business units of the company are the Green River and Aberdeen. Both the units of the FMC Corporation operate in different fields. The Green River unit operates in manufacturing of the chemical substances; while the Aberdeen Unit operates in the manufacturing of equipments used in defense industries. Although, both the units are operating in the best possible manner, but in the Green River unit of the company, there are several problems in the organizational behavior. The Site Manager of the unit, Kenneth Dailey wants to have some effective recommendations to solve the problems of the unit (FMC Corporation. 2008). Organizational Analysis By a deep analysis of the ‘organizational behavior’ of both the units, of the organization, it is observed that the workers at the Aberdeen unit are having a better work environment than that of the Green River unit. The employees of the Green River unit are not satisfied with the management practices of the company. There are three main problems in the organizational behavior of the Green River unit, which are leadership, communication and work groups or team. Work Groups or Teams: The work groups or teams are the basic requirement of the all the business units in the present business scenario. There are several plants of the Green River unit at which different human resources work. Due to the work division, the formation of ‘work groups’ and ‘team’ are not possible in the unit. This reduces the productivity of the company, as well as, provides de-motivation to the employees. Communication: Proper communication channel is the key of the business success of a company. At Green River unit the communication is very ineffective. The Management has no interaction with the employees. The communication is only in downward direction. Employees are not free to express their problems. They work at dangerous sites; but there are no means of conveying messages, if they find themselves in trouble. This makes them dissatisfied. On the other hand, at Aberdeen unit, there is a two- way communications (FMC Corporation. 2008). Leadership: Leadership is the most important organizational practice, which moulds the work behavior of the employee in positive direction and inspires them to work. The leaders at the Green River unit are autocratic in nature. They don’t allow the workers to take part in the decision making. The Management decision is ultimate, whether that is in favor of employees or not. While at the Aberdeen unit, the Management, as well as, the employees both takes part in decision making to make it suitable for all. Alternatives & Recommendations The given organizational problems of the Green River Unit can be resolved with the help of some effective recommendations. In this series, for the management of the proper work groups or teams, the management of the unit should provide the training to the employees in groups, so that, any of them may be able to work in any group. There should be a common approach, which should be followed by all the team members, equally. The organizations should try to maintain proper work groups, which can provide supportive work environment for the employees. In order to make the communication proper, the Management should make improvements in its communication process. There should be a ‘two- way’ communications in the unit. The communication channel should have some effective traits such as clarity, proper timing, integrity etc. (Harris & Hartman, 2001).This should also be oral, as well as, written. The leadership style of the management of the unit should be participative; rather than autocratic. With this, the Management would have good suggestion from the employees in the decision making process and thus, the employees can have favorable practices in their favor. Implementation of the Contingency Plan The recommendations suggested to be implemented in the organizational behavior of the Green River unit can be effectively implemented in the unit with the help of an effective contingency plan. The given contingency plan of the company consists of various phases. According to this plan, there should be some effective changes in the overall organizational process of the company. The company should change the organizational culture according to the favorability of the employees. In addition to this, the organizational development should be done from, time to time. The job designing of the employees should be done according to their skills. In addition to this, the assigning of the jobs should also be done according to the related area of the workers. For effective productivity, the Management should arrange seminars and meetings, from time to time, to have a better understanding of the employees’ personal and work related problems. With the given measures of the implementation plan, the company can have the resolution of its problems up to a certain limit and can have effective level of productivity. References FMC Corporation.
