Organizational Behavior and Communication Paper
Organization Behavior and Communication may vary in each company however the intended outcome is usually the same that is the need to have the employer and employee in line with the company's philosophy and mission. Walt Disney is a business leader in the business model of providing sound leadership and maintaining customer loyalty and its success is because of the employees buying into their philosophy. According to training manager Shelley Lauten, "Our philosophy, "Lauten said, is for every guest who walks through our doors to feel happiness. "The problem she added, is how to translate that to the company's 23,500 employees in Florida (Vaughan, Oct 31 page 11 ).
Walt Disney has been successful for over 100 years by promoting happiness to all of the universe. One way the company was able to get this point across was to create an environment which the employee be groomed on its philosophy through a training university. In reading the co-founders' biography Walt Disney eluded that he had a dream of how the company should be and he followed the dream no matter what risks were involved. Walt's training made sure every employee is made aware of and well-versed in the company's traditions. The overall culture of Walt Disney was to provide happiness to internal customers as well as external customers. Disney's espouse values are definitely aligned together with the enacted values because the culture, although rigid sustained an empire on employee camaraderie. A key part of employee training , Lauten said, consists of making sure that each new employee understands Disney's traditions because understanding contributes to pride (Vaughan, Oct 31 Page 11 ). From my work experience sometimes pride is frowned upon; however I believe differently. When a employee takes ownership in there job responsibilities, which to me is also taking on pride in his or her performance or tasks provides exceptional results for the company. Moreover, the employee feels good about his or her accomplishment. Disney in fact, is rated one of the top 10 employers to work before because of their ,"Happy" work environment. Disney holds it upper management accountable for its success but also rewards accordingly. For almost 15 years, thousands of business have learned Disney's philosophy on leadership, customer loyalty, business creativity and people management in seminars at Walt Disney World (Schneider, Dec 2000 ). Disney's training was so successful within the company culture that it could embark upon another streamline of business that was to offer up this services to other companies. People wanted to know how Disney was so successful and through Disney's costly training but worthwhile seminars' were able to experience the overall package firsthand. Outside managers who took the training not only received the rigid course training but could use the amusement park to get a first level experience of the customer. Sometimes employers' do not realize that customers are not only external, they are internal too and each individual should be treated the same whether he or she are paying for a service or providing a service. One member of training course believe in a religious tone in teachings of Disney's training that is true. Walt Disney 's core beliefs were that of Christian values that he was not of ashamed expressing. Disney's training and core values almost integrated the slogan in all society that is to "Go the extra mile for the customer".
Disney has a long history of success by implementing a strict but happy curriculum to the staff. It has a no nonsense approach however it is brought forward right away upon gaining employment with the company. Disney is one of those companies where you do not have to guess what your role is. You simply have to be in the business of making your life and other's life a happy experience. Every employee is a cast member.
Of course there are high standards to meet in most companies but everyone employee has a choice to adopt the organizational culture or to decide that it is really not something they would want to be a part of. We think this is fair said," Lauten said. "No matter where you work, you're held to the same standard." For example Disney had a dress code, no facial hair for men and no frosted hair on women. A person may take offense to such rules but given a broad perspective would find that these two requirements are minuscule in comparison to the over benefits available. Disney embodied its value of everyone experiencing happiness by way of training and execution of that same training. Disney not only talked the talked but also walked the walk for years and years to come.
