What do managers do in terms of functions, roles, and skills'
Managers aim to achieve their goals through the use of other people. Their primary role is to make decisions, allocate resources, and delegate tasks to members of the organization. Managers main function is to coordinate activities within the organization via planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Managers start by establish a set of goal and developing a method for accomplishing these goals. Manager, then organize the established goals and assign members within the organization with the responsibility of accomplishing them, as well as to whom they report to. Furthermore, managers functions to lead and control by motivating employees and encouraging them that things are going the way they should via monitoring performance.
Managers also have to take upon some key roles such as being interpersonal, informational, and 'decisional.' Manager must know how to relate with other members of the organization and must be able to motivate the employees to be more productive. Managers must also be able to acquire and transmit information about the organization's plans and goals that will make the company successful. Manager role is also to make key decisions that will make the organization profitable and know when to exercise disciplinary or corrective action when faced with any deviations from company's protocol. These roles are easily achieved if the managers possess the necessary skills for efficient leadership. These skills include the appropriate technical skills, human skills, and conceptual skills. Being knowledgeable about their roles as manager, having the mental ability to solve complex situational problems, and knowing how to relate with other members in the organization will prove to be an asset in becoming an effective manager.
What is organizational behavior (OB)'
Organizational behavior is the field of study that assesses individual, group, and organizational structure and how they affect behaviors within an organization. The purpose of studying organizational behavior is to use information attained to improve the effectiveness of the organization. Studying organizational behavior will help managers understand better how members attitude and perception affect their behavior and the performance of the organization. Studying OB will help managers better adjust to workplace diversity and cope with the different cultures within the organization. For example in American culture, 'thumps up” represents good job, while in Iranian culture it is more of an insult. Studying OB will allow managers to understand workplace diversity, embrace it , and cope with the changing demographics. Studying OB will also enable the organization to be profitable by improving people skills and customer service. OB can also help mangers respond to globalization especially when faced with economic distress by perhaps moving jobs to countries with low labor cost
