Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts Paper There are several concepts related to organizations. All organizations have a culture that gives a frame work to the values within the organization. There are also organizational behaviors that can be observed within an organization that give hints to how the individuals within the organization act. These organizations also strive for diversity within their workforce in order to expand their potential for skilled workers. However none of this could be done within any organization without communication between groups and individuals. The organizational culture and behavior are present in every organization, even my own. Organizational Culture In the internal environment of organizations, the shared beliefs and values that influence the behavior of organizational members create what is called the organizational culture (Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). When observing an organization with a strong culture it will be noticed that the organization has a clear vision of the future, and that vision is supported by beliefs and values that are developed and well communicated. These organizations are usually orientated around high performance and emphasize on teamwork. The leaders of these organizations with strong organizational cultures usually encourage risk taking and strive for innovation. Organizational Behavior Organizational behavior is the study of individuals and groups within an organization (Schermerhorn, Jr., Hunt, & Osborn, 2008). When observed, these organizational behaviors can offer valuable insights into an organization. The academic discipline that studies organizational behavior strives to understand individual and group behavior, interpersonal processes, and organizational dynamics. The goal in studying these behaviors is to improve the performance of the organization and the individuals within it. By studying, learning, and understanding organizational behaviors individuals can understand themselves and others better and how work related knowledge can expand their potential for career success. Diversity Within the workforce diversity is described as the individual differences based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and able-bodiedness. An organization with a positive culture strives to take advantage of diversity by utilizing the talents, ideas, and creative potential of all of its members. It is well understood in American society that workforce diversity is growing as the trends in demographic diversity continue to spread. As diversity continues to expand it will be a challenge to have respect and a sense of multiculturalism grow with it. Communication Communication is the process of sending and receiving symbols in a message with attached meaning. To have proper communication a specific process must be done. First a source of the information that is to be communicated must encode an intended meaning into a message. Next, a receiver must receive the message and decode its meaning. Then the receiver can give feedback to the source that the message was received and understood, but this is not always needed. This seems like a simple process but unfortunately noise can get in the way of good communication. Noise is any disturbance that disrupts the effectiveness of communication and interferes with the transference of messages within the communication process. Communication is used to change the attitudes, knowledge, or behavior of the receiver. Culture and Behavior of My Organization The culture at my organization is team orientated. Everyone works together to get jobs done. If someone is struggling to get a specific task done then others will step in to help so that the whole project does not fall behind. The organizational behavior at my organization can sometimes be selfish and off task but is never bad enough to cause alarm. The organization can sometimes seem like it is split into different groups and those groups act in different ways. These groups sometimes comment on the other groups and make remarks about how they would do something differently if they were in charge. However, the overall groups of employees are well behaved and can communicate well with each other when the mood is right. Conclusion These concepts define an organizations ability to compete in today’s world. The values within the organization are developed by the organizational culture. Observers can also get an idea of how the individuals within the organization act by observing the organizational behaviors of the groups. Diversity within the workforce is an important part of any organizations ability to adapt and expand. One of the most important concepts for an organization is its communication, because without good communication nothing else can happen. My organization uses communication to develop its organizational culture and behavior. References Schermerhorn, Jr., J. R., Hunt, J. G., & Osborn, R. N. (2008). Organizational behavior (10th ed.).
