Organizational Behavior Terminology and Concepts Paper Management in its simplicity is the act of effectively motivating people whom may have different backgrounds, personalities, lifestyles and work ethics to work together towards accomplishing a common goal or project. The usage of management skills are not limited to just the business arena. The dynamics of management can be implemented in households, schools, classrooms and in recreation. Management encompasses four elements, which include planning, organizing, leading and controlling (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Organizational culture, organizational behavior, diversity and communication are also important successes within management. The process in which ideas and goals shared can be defined as planning. The skill to strategize plays a significant role in the world of management. Implementing systems and processes are important variables to the success of a manager. In my educational profession, I execute planning skills on a daily basis. My responsibility is to ensure student data accuracy and federal compliance. Developing and executing follow through as well as effective communication of these processes are the veins of the success of our schools because incompliance can be the determining factor to lose funding. Communication is key and vital to a thriving organization. Effective communication is an opportunity to share knowledge among individuals whether if the conversation is positive feedback or constructive criticism. I often refer to debates as heated fellowship, which helps lighten the situation and guide the discussion towards a more positive outcome. Several types of functions exist in the planning process such as strategic, tactical, operational and contingency. Strategic planning determines where an organization is going over the next year or more, Tactical Planning is the process of taking the strategic plan and breaking it down into specific, short-term actions and plans. Operational planning specifies short-term objectives and resources for each unit in the organization. A Contingency plan is a plan devised for a specific situation when things could go wrong. In the educational field, most if not all of these functions exist in the planning process of federal and compliance (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Organization is a good skill to possess and exhibit. The talent to orchestrate multiple tasks in a systematic way shows effectiveness, cohesiveness within an organization. By obtaining this particular attribute can promote the guaranteed success of an organization. The organization KIPP Houston Academy where I recently employ believes in their employees possessing organizational skills. In the world of KIPP there are numerous programs that go on simultaneously so it behooves the fellow KIPPsters to be well organized in efforts to be effective within the different programs that are offered. Also within the PEIMS department there are numerous areas in which the organization is to remain compliant as it relates to student data, economic status, LEP/ BIL/ESL programs, gifted and talented and At-risk population just to name a few. Each of these particular programs consists of different reportable elements and requires exceptional organizational skills to prepare. A manager possessing great leadership skills within an organization is a rare find in these times. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge and skills. The saying that leaders are not born but are made has some merit. A good leader is constantly perfecting their leadership skills and good leaders develop through a never-ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience. The founder of KIPP Houston, Mike Feinberg believes firmly in giving his campus leaders the power to lead. I think this is an awesome concept to learn outside the box. KIPP Houston has fourteen campuses and each campus looks completely different because of the power to lead. I believe this concept is great for school climate and culture. The students of KIPP benefits from the diversity because they can experience different styles of learning which will empower them to become life-long learners. The essential vigor that keeps an organization jointed is the establishment of control systems. Control can be considered as a process that directs the activities of individuals towards the achievement of organizational goals. Budgeting as a control mechanism can assure financial integrity, accountability and legal compliance. In the educational sector, Texas Education Agency also known as TEA placing control systems to enforce compliances as it relates to federal and state funding. An example of one of the many control systems that TEA has implemented is PID Enrollment Tracking or PET. The PET Submission is a report of student enrollment information for the current school year in which certain data is required for the submission. The report is due on a weekly basis to TEA to track students’ enrollment and withdraws within the state of Texas (Texas Education Agency, 2008). In conclusion, the roles of managers are constantly changes within the current times. The success of an organization is contingent on establishing and maintaining organizational culture, organizational behaviors, embracing diversity and communicating effectively. Practicing these functions effectively within an organization will ensure longevity.
