Observation
4/20/2012
Lounging around the house it gave me opportunity to observe my house hold surroundings. On a typical day I interact with my daughter and my family members. The first thing my daughter knows to do when she get home is her homework. My past use of nonverbal communication encourages my daughter to begin her homework. This is a routine that has been in the working since she began elementary school. Once my daughter has completed her homework for the evening, I check over it with her for errors. While going over homework we are going through Knapp’s Model of interaction stages for coming together. By displaying the skills properly, we achieve greater connection and better understanding between us to. Before my evening is over my sister stops over for a while. We set down and tell each other about how our day either at class or work went. We are demonstrating interpersonal communication. We are using a variety of interpersonal communication; including feedback, purpose and effect, and a sender. Before I end my night I check my e-mail from my instructors. E-mail communication is asynchronous, meaning that it does not take places in real time. My final moments while woken at home, I engage in impression management. I play through a list of affinity-seeking strategies. I try and plan out my next day with better interactions that can improve me.
Working an eight hour shift i encounter different situations. I have a mentoring relationship with my director of nursing (Doc). Having a healthy relationship with a higher power colleague like DOC can help me advance myself in the health field. I work as an Aid for a nursing home. Ageism against the younger generation is a continuous battle between employees and residents. Elderly people feel that all younger people are destroying their mind because of the technology advancement. I personally do not agree, but just because I disagree doesn’t mean I can’t voice my opinion. My response will reflexes on how assertive my message was. Either my message is confirmation or disconfirmation to the other party. Hopefully the message was confirmation, this way I can receive a response back and input from the conversation. Lastly, on the job I encounter individuals with mental or health defects. I try and keep communication the same as a health human and stray from ableism. Avoiding talking about the person with a disability in the third person. Don’t assume that people who have a disability are intellectually impaired. These are just some techniques I use while encountering the less unfortunate.
I set down in the lunch room after class to observe people communicating to others. I watched as a student and teacher showed eye contact the whole time they discussed papers. Eye communication insures attentions from both parties and regulates the conversation. Glancing Back down to write notes I notice my personal distance among myself and others. Your personal distance ranges from 18 inches to 4 feet. This phase is the extent to which you can physically get your hands on things. To the right of me I had a couple that was chatting next to me. I couldn’t make out clearly what they were arguing about but I could make out her body gesture. Her body language told me she was unhappy by her arms being folding towards her chest. She also stops responding back to the young man. I wanted to reach out to her and show empathizes. Now, becoming hungry while I waited for my next class to begin I observed lateral communication. The workers from subway were communicating among the other workers within the cafeteria. Good relationship and meaningful communication between workers are among the main sources of workers satisfaction.
