Q1. What are person centred values' Person-Centred Values in care is an approach that respects and values the uniqueness of the individual, and seeks to maintain or if required, restore their individuality. This is done by creating an environment that promotes the personal worth, uniqueness, and social confidence of the individual as well as respect, independence and hope. Q2. Explain why person centred values must influence all aspects of health and social care. Person-centred care values must influence all aspects of health and social care work. Health and social care should be based on person-centred values, and should be individualised as this is a law requirement (Human Rights Act 1998, Health and Social care Act 2012, Codes of practice for Social Care Workers, etc). If person-centre values that underpin all work in the health and social care sector are followed as they should be then all individuals should feel that and health and social workers ensure that: • the individual is supported in accessing their rights • the individual is treated has an individual • the individual is supported to exercise choice • ensure the individual have privacy if they want it • support the individual to be as independent as possible • treat all individuals with dignity and respect To ensure the above is followed will influence all aspect of health and social care it is important to ensure that all individuals are treated as such and person- centred care should ensure this. Q3. What is consent' In law, voluntary agreement with an action proposed by another. Consent is an act of reason; the person giving consent must be of sufficient mental capacity and be in possession of all essential information in order to give valid consent. A person who is an infant, is mentally incompetent, or is under the influence of drugs is incapable of giving consent. Consent must also be free of coercion or fraud. Q4. What factors might influence an individual’s capability to express consent' The term “consent capacity” describes an adult’s ability to understand information relevant to making an informed, voluntary decision. A wide variety of diseases, disorders, conditions, and injuries can affect a person’s ability to understand such information. Informed consent is a phrase often used in law to indicate that the consent a person gives meets certain minimum standards. In order to give informed consent, the individual concerned must have adequate reasoning faculties and be in possession of all relevant facts at the time consent is given. Impairments to reasoning and judgment which may make it impossible for someone to give informed consent include such factors as basic intellectual or emotional immaturity, high levels of stress such as PTSD or as severe mental retardation, severe mental illness, intoxication, severe sleep deprivation, Alzheimer's disease, or being in a coma. Q5. What would you do if you could not establish consent' If an elderly person, or anyone else for that matter, cannot give consent, either because they cannot communicate or because they cannot understand the question, the next of kin is usually asked. The exact order is determined by state law so varies somewhat but is usually spouses, then parents, then children. An acquaintance who states that they have knowledge of the persons wishes often can also give consent. If there is so one identified that can give consent the treating staff can act in what they reasonably believe to be the patient's best interest in emergencies. If all of the above fails the courts appoint a guardian. Q6. Write a reflective account relating to applying active participation to meet individual’s needs. It also means involving them in all aspects of their care ie making choices, identifying their own care needs, deciding their own and others roles etc. By supporting them to do this you are applying active participation to meet individual needs. eg through care planning, risk assessments, arranging activities and monitoring them etc. Q7. Explain how you would support an individual to question or challenge decisions concerning them. That depends on the mental capacity of the individual you want to support. First, you must obtain their permission and then you must get them to express as exactly as possible what help they reckon they need. Then you can offer further information, suggestions, and a plan to challenge such decisions. You could offer to be their spokesperson if they weren't confident enough to speak out, or to accompany them to any hearing or appointment. However, if the person is mentally impaired, you would have to get their signed permission to speak and act on their behalf before any health or social care workers would listen to you. Because of issues of confidentiality, you either have to be next of kin, or obtain powers of attorney or guardianship.
