Eavan Cuddy Professor Lenson Comp-lit 131 10/19/2010 My failed meeting with Mustapha Mond A meeting with Mustapha Mond would for me be frustrating as my emotional response to the way he runs his society would be critical and judgemental An interaction with Mustapha would go something along these lines. “I have to ask why would you want this society it seems there are better options than this “ I said with some apprehension “ cant you see how flawed this all is the world you have created is like a glass half full, a mute world.” “Yes but you can just look at all the possible good” said Mind “You have to see what this world provides which is stability the world may not be perfect for everyone yet it works and we have a calm peaceful society.” “But its not right” I said with concerned and some agitation “The world needs to be flawed to be real this is a hollow drugged out world with everyone just wants gratification the only deep thinkers out there have been separated from the rest of the world like they have some infection.” “ It all works for the best as the intellectual have their freedom to be part of more intelligent circles and can be involved in the more civilized pursuits they crave” Mond spoke with a tone of a zealous teacher “The people in this world need to be not very bright so they will not be annoyed by their place in society. This ensures happiness in for the gammas. If they had more intellectual thinking they would not be so happy with their place in society would they. There has to be inequality for the World State to work.” “Yeah sadly equality never really exist anywhere” I realized he had a point there but it was more of a reluctant acceptance. “No world will ever have a society where everyone is equal. No one would be able to do the crap jobs in the worlds. Its not right but everyone is equal is just a pipe dream. You realize that you’re just more honest about that fact.” “ I am not a fan of this either but unfortunately it is one of those hard realities of life everyone has to accept yet so many live I denial of the whole thing” Mond look grim and seemed to warm up with me a bit after we came to an agreement on something other than a argument on the moral reasons of his society “ This world is not all perfect but it is the most stabile.” “But it feels so empty there is no emotion no passion for anything people are just out for their own gratification. There is no connection amongst others can you see why that could change and be more helpful to society'” “Relationships produce emotional and therefore social instability, strife, and unhappiness. While it is easy to think of ways that relationships make people happy it’s also easy to see where it can all go wrong. Too much passion can be dangerous for people and their actions can be led to unstableness for some citizens.” “But isn’t family supposed to stabilize you'” I shot back with a bit of skepticism “ Emotions can make the world more whole and I understand how it does not fit in your society but honestly your society is just mainly creating infantile people who only want a fix for their happiness.” “You’re missing the point” Mond always seemed so calm even when I tried to poke at what I saw as the flaws in his society. Mond had seemed to be aware of what this world has created and was content with his choices “Another thing I am not fond of in your society is it seems just to be based off consumerism. That is not great way to base society off of and in my opinion it is a little self-serving. Can you see there is a massive flaw in that everything needs to be new in your society otherwise they have to dispose of it.” “ I get what your saying but you have to see it from a different point of view society is stable this way as it is everyone has found happiness in this way the world is ok in this way yet you seem to want a world that is emotional but there are flaws in that as this world everyone can be happy and safe. Your world would only be chaos and there will be more problems that cant be solve as easily as they would be in mine.” “Your world is a sedated mess and that is the big problem with it” is as finally angered yet as usual he seemed calm as ever I wanted to show him what the world could be like if he would just open his eyes and listen to someone but himself “ Do you honestly have strong convictions in what you are doing'” “I do I know its hard to believe in what I am doing and that this system is wrong but it’s the best solution to the worlds problems. Society runs more smoothly this way I am giving these people the happiness they crave and shutting out the negative emotions. No one in this society is miserable I don’t give them the choice all they know is the bliss of the life they know now.” Mond look like he had given this speech before and it seemed that he was set t follow this path and I realized I would have no shot of swaying his opinion my way. “You are a complex man” I said, “You have seen the depths of both worlds but I can’t understand why you did not want to go into to exile'” “I thought my place was here” Mond stares at me, which is very unsettling “I wanted to help people by giving them happiness. To live on one of the islands was tempting I will admit yet I know my place is here where I am doing my duties for the people.” “But is it not also kind of appealing for having the power'” I asked knowing I might for once provoke an emotional response. “ You run the world and you make most of the decisions. That was not appealing to you at all'” “I did not look at it that way I thought I was better suited here. That is where the world needed me. I feel we have reached an impasse in our discussion its time we say goodbye.” I left here as I began unsatisfied and melancholy on the whole system.
