Part A 1:
Briefly describe where you see yourself professionally in three years time. Briefly outline what characteristics attracted you to this career path. Identify and discuss three short term goals that need to be achieved for your three year plan to be successful.
In the three years after graduation, I plan to be an operation room nurse with comprehensive surgeries knowledge and professional operational assistant skills. First of all, I am a male nurse, there are many obstruction for male nurses to work in a ward, such as helping female patients shower, changing women’s clothes. Many ladies think they do not have privacy if a male nurse looks after them. Even some patients will reject male nurses to do anything for them. Therefore, most of wards’ nursing jobs are not suitable for male nurses. But the nursing job in operation room is busy and complicated. Many surgeries require physical condition and skills. So it will be a fantastic challenge for a man to complete. I have been an operation room nurse in China for two years. I still remember the first time when I stepped into the theatre. It was a very strict and cool place. I still remember the first operation which I took part in. The patient was a cooperative female, she was very kind and nice. When I helped the doctors to cut her left hand’s skin, I felt unbelievable nervous, but she told me to relax and have a deep breath. Then I begin to love this job. The reason is that we can release their pain or illness immediately, we have the highway to help them and the effect can be very positive. In the operation room, we can witness the birth of life, also we must accept the end of life. It makes me love my current life more than before. I can’t forget that we meet these patients who are very anxious, worry and nervous in every morning. So I always tell myself to give best service to the patients. Operation room nurses use their smile to every patient, which will release the anxiety of the patients. There are three goals which I want to complete in three years. Firstly, I must work in TSSU (Theatre sterile supplement unit) for one year. TSSU is a dispensable department of operation room. Know the daily work of TSSU and learn about the fundamental knowledge of the Aseptic technique. This kind of knowledge includes management of surgical instruments, a variety of sterilization monitoring and coordination of the supply capacity of each operating room. Which I should do in the first year is to have the ability to supply the normal and special instruments to every operation room and each surgery. Also I should study the surgeries’ procedures and provide the correct instruments to these operations. In this year, another important point is to learn the professional words of surgeries, because I’m an international student and many operating words can’t be touched in class. Therefore, first year is a accumulating experience year, it’s a preparation for second year. In the second year, I plan to be a general surgical nurse to learn the basing of corporation of operation. It includes various surgeries’ process, aseptic technique and managements of normal operating room apparatuses. In the third year, I think I will start to assist a few more complicated operations, such as brain surgeries, cardiac surgeries and bone surgeries. Because these surgeries need more special instruments and tools and their processes are more sophisticated and lengthy. It will increase my surgical assistant technology and predictability. Most of the best surgical nurses have the comprehensive techniques of every part of the operation. So I will practice more in three years to achieve the goal.
Part A 2:
1) Three most relevant skills or attributes of a graduate nurse/midwife that are specific to my three year goal.
a. Management of Operation Room: (1) ensure patient safety and the highest quality of care; (2) provide surgeons with appropriate access to the OR; (3) maximize the efficiency of operating room utilization, staff, and materials to reduce costs; (4) decrease patient delays; (5) enhance satisfaction among patients, staff, and physicians.
b. Fundamental Operation skill: (1) dress in appropriate attire; (2) sterilize operation room; (3) setup operation room equipment; (3) prepare operating instruments and supplies
c. Operation Assistance: (1) familiar with operating procedures (2) help surgeon and handover instruments correctly (3) count every instruments before and after operation
2) Provide rationales and discuss why each of these skills/attributes are specifically relevant to your three year goal.
a. Operating room management is the science of how to run an operating room suite. It focuses on maximizing operational efficiency at the facility to maximize the number of surgical cases that can be done on a given day while minimizing the required resources and related costs. Also nurse should provide the highest service to patients, make patients comfortable, no anxious, worry and scare. For example, what is the number of required anaesthetists or the scrub nurses that are needed next week to accommodate the expected workload or how can we minimize the cost of drugs used in the operating room' Strategic operating room management deals with long-term decision-making. Typically, operating room management in profit-oriented health care systems emphasizes strategic thinking whereas in countries with publicly funded health care, the focus is on operational decisions. Make sure that every instrument is proper to use and staff can use them properly and easily.
b. Fundamental operating room skills must be carefully and consistently applied in order to assure a safe and ever ready medical environment. Operating room specialists, usually the circulator and the scrub, utilize their skills and coordinate their activities throughout a surgical procedure. Specialists provide assistance to operating surgeons, doctors and nurses by constantly supplying and retrieving items such as sponges, needles and instruments, as needed. The operating room specialist must always wear the appropriate attire in order to avoid possible contamination. A surgical hat and mask as well as a scrub suit must be worn at all times. The surgical hat prevents hair from falling onto instruments and into the patient’s wounds. The surgical mask prevents germs from escaping into the atmosphere and affecting both the patient and staff. Without such protection, individuals can fall prey to such diseases as hepatitis B virus. Sterilization is a top priority for an operation room. After washing his own hands, an operating room specialist must perform a systematic cleaning of every object. This involves damp dusting furniture and other facilities with a disinfectant solution. In the process of sterilization, an operating room specialist must start from the tallest cabinet to the shortest tables. This method helps airborne microorganism become settled. In addition, the specialist must wet vacuum the entire floor, arranging the furniture during the process. All operation equipment must not only work properly but also stabilized and positioned for the patients in order to avoid wasted time in life and death emergency situation. This means the room technician must check and prepare the overhead lights, the operating table and the suction machine for proper functioning. In addition, the cabinets must be checked for adequate supplies. If supplies are low, the cabinet must be restocked in time to meet the demands of emergencies. Usually operation specialists will seek to have prior knowledge of upcoming surgeries. Access to surgical instruments and supplies must be at hand for doctors and nurses performing surgeries. This includes preparing the operation table with all of the necessary cutting, dissecting and stitching instruments as well as sponges and needles. The absence of these supplies when needed could prove fatal to the patient undergoing surgery. Therefore, the operating room technician must be well aware of scheduled operations in order to meet the demands of this critical activity.
c. Operating assistance is a current level to determine a operation room nurse whether he/she has done a fantastic job. Every surgical nurse has to explain the procedures of the operation which he has taken part in. This is a based knowledge of an OR nurse. After knowing the processes of the surgery, nurse can help the surgeons properly. Why should nurse do this' Because it can reduce the time of an operation. As well as it can reduce the rate of infection and bleeding and give patient the least damage. In addition, counting instruments is another importance for operation room nurses to remember impressively. Avoiding anything which should not be in the patient’s body is left in the client’s wound. If it happens, it will cause another operation for patient to get it out. So before an operation and shut wounds, after the surgery, nurses should check that there is nothing in the patient’s body, which should not be there.
These three skills are vital for operation room to remember. In my three years after graduation, these skills must be used in my operation assistant’s life every day. It can help me not do mistake, not do anything hurt patients. Even in the third year, I can try to apply the manager job of an operation room because of these three fantastic skills.
