Analysis of the Skills and Qualities of the Administrator with Personal Insights The three years of working with the Program Development Manager make it easier for me to process the skills and qualities of a respectable administrator coupled by the granted opportunity to have her interviewed by myself. Her thoughts are priceless as they are encouraging and moving. No wonder I am set to interview two more nursing administrators on the coming weeks in order to get their thoughts on matters related to the ones I discussed below. There is no question that an effective administrator should be motivated to do the daring tasks she faces every working day, every hour and minute. Having observed and interviewed a person who selflessly works hard, being almost always the last person to leave the office way beyond the working hours, should strengthen my concept that motivation reflects an action word. Motivation according to her is dependent on how much one loves and values her work. Working for her is like a hobby, which she gives valuable time and energy in order to excel on such craft. It also helps to be surrounded by people you enjoy working with and nothing can compare to being able to contribute one’s strength and expertise towards the improvement of a unit and the whole community in general. Undeniably, it is from being motivated where her natural way of exuding leadership skills is rooted. She is somebody who is outspoken, creative, influential, a good decision-maker, and has a strong personal drive to lead. Also, her very notable trait of looking as tough as nails and stress-proof demeanor are admirable. According to her a leader should be flexible, that one can be a standout whether she is a clinician, educator, manager or researcher. These traits no matter how natural for her are not something she is born with but a product of time and experience. She elaborated that working with great minds takes its toll positively on her. Her first unit manager for example taught her valuable work habits that prove to be significant in the person that she is right now. Also worth mentioning is the opportunity she has to work with the current health secretary, Dr. Ona which proved to be favorable. Mistakes should not be horrifying at all and the courage to stand with your convictions and decisions is crucial in a manager. Many times, an attitude of not taking NO as an answer spells what the future holds. These are just a few traits/lessons from the X number of years/ experience she had that contributes to her outcome-oriented leadership and decision-making skills. Handling conflicts in the workplace can effectively be combated with a belief that everything can be resolved for as long as there is communication. It is helpful to be in a neutral position as a mediator and be keen on finding the small window of understanding where two opposing parties can agree upon. The feasibility of having the conflict resolved depends on the readiness of the parties involved and how well the mediator can focus on finding a solution to the problem and not letting it escalate to something else which doesn’t help in conflict resolution. According to her, it doesn’t matter whether it is a vertical or horizontal conflict in nature as long us you can communicate effectively then one can expect a conflict resolution coming. Although it is hard to talk about finances and entrepreneurial concerns, she welcomed the issues head-on with a baseline thought on providing services. In a managerial level, it is important to note that everything comes with a cost and risk. Stuffs that come in and out of a unit have a price, and being able to balance expenses and revenues will be highly dependent on a good plan. Managing resources including human resource and material resources are very important to consider in managerial planning. It is not really as easy to manage as to talk about concepts related to it but taking it from a person who learned from the University of Life, it is encouraging to muster the courage to face and choose the hard experiences if you have an end goal of improving yourself on matters related to finance and marketing. To be successful, one should not forget to look at how the people you are managing develop because of you; more so, since they will be a good barometer for evaluating how the process of you managing them help them become better individuals who can take your place in the future. Investing on people is crucial in the success of a business. In terms of technology utilization in decision making process, there is no doubt Fresenius is on top of its game on this matter. Being a global company that has tremendous market in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific region, being able to connect each other is crucial. An intranet or own website prove to be useful in updates and events that happen from its numerous branches internationally. Locally, Fresenius has tapped services like yahoogroups to connect all of their employees from different regions of the country. Updates are made and concerns can be raised so that timely action can be made. The company is also equipped with high-tech rooms which can be used for meetings not to mention that the whole institution is a wi-fi zone with computers and library area where important documents and literatures are placed. Lastly, on matters of involvement in policy Ms. Orioste doesn’t shy away from various ways she is involved. In terms of the company, she is hands-on in formulating guidelines that put direction to the company. Privacy issues may not allow us to further elaborate on this but it is undoubtedly noteworthy to say that nurse managers should be adept in policy-making. On a much bigger perspective, talking about her being a board member of the Renal Nurses Association of the Philippines (RENAP), formulating guidelines for the organization includes interagency involvement as DOH and PHILHEALTH and other agencies take part. In the future, she is optimistic that policy-making related to our profession will extend to the Senate.
