The NPHC
And It’s Founders
We have all heard of the NPHC right' But for those of you who haven’t I will be giving a brief history of it and its founder the “Divine Nine”. The agenda of this speech is to inform you of the NPHC, how its founder came together, and who are the founders.
First, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, also known as the NPHC, is an organization collaborated of nine historic African American greek letter Fraternities and Sororities. The organizations are simply known collectively as the “Divine Nine”. On May 10, 1930 the NPHC was formed as a permanent organization on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, D.C. Even though it was formed in Washington the NPHC was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois in 1937. The NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives various activities and functions.
Established in an age when racial segregation and disenfranchisement plagued African Americans, the rise of each fraternity and sorority that makes up the NPHC, bore witness to the fact that despite hardship African Americans refused to accede to a status of inferiority. “Unanimity of thoughts and actions as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organization.” this is the stated purpose and mission written in 1930. This statement was written by the first five fraternities and sororities that came together on the night of May 10.
The five founders of the NPHC were: Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta, the others didn’t join until years later. Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma both joined in 1931 and Sigma Gamma Rho in 1937. The council was completed in 1997 when the fraternity of Iota Phi Theta was organized. In 1992, the first permanent national office for the NPHC was established in Bloomington, Indiana on the campus of Indiana University. Even before the organization of the NPHC, fraternities and sororities were already being organized.
The two fraternities that help found the NPHC were Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi. Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on January 5, 1911 by Elder Watson Diggs, John Milton Lee, Bryon Kenneth Armstrong, Guy Levi Grant, Ezra D. Alexander, Henry T. Asher, Marcus Peter Blakemore, Paul W. Caine, Edward Giles Irvin, and George Wesley Edmonds. Kappa Alpha Psi goes by three different names: Nupes, Kappas, and Pretty Boys their colors are crimson and cream. Omega Psi Phi founded on November 17, 1911 by Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. They go by five different names Omegas, Sons of Blood and Thunder, Omega men, Da Bruhz, and Q Dogs and their colors are royal purple and old gold.
The three sororities were Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta. Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on January 15, 1908 by Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lille Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe, and Mary Taylor. Alpha Kappa Alpha colors are salmon pink and apple green and are known as AKA’s. Delta Sigma Theta founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 students, who had been initiated into Kappa Alpha Kappa earlier. The seven most important out of the 22 were Mrya Davis Hemmings, Ethel Cuff Black, Edith Motte Young, Jessie McGuire Dent, Winona Alexander, Frederica Chase Dodd, and Pauline Minor, known as Deltas or DST their colors are crimson and cream. Zeta Phi Beta was the last of the organization that made up the original five. It was founded on January 16, 1920 by Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie, and Pearl Neal. Their colors are royal blue and white, they also go by Zetas and Sisters of the Dove.
Lets recap what we've talked about the NPHC was founded on May 10, 1930 by five fraternities and sororities Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta. The other fraternities and sororities are Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Iota Phi Theta.
