The New (Disturbia) vs. The Old (Rear Window)
In the movie Rear Window directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and Disturbia directed by DJ Caruso, these movies both share in common spying. This puts the characters in other people’s business which you should not be involved in or snooping. Rear Window was produced in 1954, and Disturbia was produced in 2007. The movie Disturbia is alike the movie Rear Window in ways of similarities and differences.
In the movie Rear Window the main character is L.B Jefferies which many people call him Jeff he’s in his older ages, and he has a cast on his leg, because he was getting an action shot on a racetrack, and he is restricted to the view of his back window of his apartment in his wheelchair. Jeff has girlfriend and her name is, Lisa Freemont, and the woman that takes care of him during his injury is his nurse Stella. Jeff gets into other people’s business and looks at what everyone else is doing, pretty much being nosey and getting his nose into things he shouldn’t be getting himself into. Jeff gets so into one of his neighbors business that he ends up solving and finding out that Lars Thorwald killed his wife Emma Thorwald. By doing this he put himself into danger and also put others around him involved in the relevance of the murder in danger too.
In the movie Disturbia Kale is the main character, he is a teenager, and Kale has a ankle bracelet on his ankle. Kale is limited to where he can go, he is on house arrest pretty much for punching his Spanish teacher in the face in class during class. Kale spies on his new neighbor, Ashley, the children across the street, and also Mr. Turner. The main person he is concerned about and is a bit fishy about is Mr. Turner, which is the neighbor that Kale tries to convince to his best friend Ronnie, and Ashley that Turner is a serial killer and that he is the one that is wanted on the news. Kale while finally figuring out the truth that Turner is a serial killer put his mom and friends in danger of Mr. Turner in the end.
In the movies Disturbia and Rear Window the director made the main characters Kale and L.B Jefferies limited to their space of where they could go. Kale had an ankle bracelet on his ankle and the ankle bracelet made him limited to where he could go, he had a set area where he could go around which was his house. Kale could go nowhere else outside the set boundary or else the cops would be notified to get Kale and Kale would get into more trouble. The other main character L.B Jefferies was limited to his space he was stuck in his apartment with a full leg cast, because he broke his leg. Jefferies was in his wheelchair and had vision out the back window of his apartment, to watch as he pleased on anyone he wanted.
Alfred Hitchcock put a female character named Lisa Freemont in his film of Rear Window, and Lisa was blonde and was also very attractive. This was a female usually blonde and also attractive was in most of Hitchcock’s films. In DJ Caruso’s film Disturbia he used Ashley a blonde teenager that was attractive and about Kales age. In Rear Window Lisa was Jeff’s girlfriend, but to Jeff Lisa was too perfect, she was too good for him and Jeff did not have any problem with speaking to girls or with them really. But In Disturbia Kale did not have a girlfriend, but when Ashley came to his front door he was not really used to talking to her, he was kind of shocked and did not really know what to say, then later in the movie Kale ends up getting Ashley. Between the two main characters Kale knows what he wants; he wanted Ashley and ended up getting her. Then Jefferies does not quite know what he wants, he has his girlfriend Lisa, but he says she is too good and too perfect for him, but yet they both are together and cannot get used to each other’s ways of living life.
In both movies, the Female character’s get caught face to face by the killer. In Disturbia Ashley was following Turner in the market, and looses him. Ashley leaves and when driving in the parking garage stops her car quick and stares face to face with the killer. Turner got into Ashley’s car and turned it off and said to her that he liked his privacy to be kept to himself and that it is for himself only, and that pretty much they all should stop spying on him. In Rear Window, Lisa was caught in Thorwalds’ apartment face to face, and she was grabbed by him. Lisa was talking to Thorwald and could not get out in time so she was caught dead in her steps by him in his apartment. Both movies put the female character face to face caught in their steps doing something they should not have been doing.
The movie Rear Window ends with Thorwald being caught, and with the main character sitting in his wheelchair with both of his legs broken instead of one. With him is also his girlfriend Lisa sitting on the bed reading a book. This ending was kind of a not happy ending because instead of Jefferies with only one week left with his cast on, it left him with both legs broken and multiple weeks left with his legs in casts. Alfred Hitchcock believed in punishment for those who spied and peeked in other people’s business. So therefore Hitchcock made the ending a punishment for Jefferies by both legs broken. In Disturbia it was a happy ending because Kale got the killer revealed and saved his mother, and no one was hurt at the end. Kale was happy at the end with his girlfriend Ashley giving her a kiss and being rewarded by getting his ankle bracelet off early.
The movies Rear Window and Disturbia share similarities and differences throughout the movie. Both movies have the main character that is restricted from the places they are allowed and able to go to. The main character spies and gets them self into other people’s lives and they find out stuff that they never should have seen or known. This puts the main character along with the other characters in a situation that is not good, and it puts their lives possibly in danger by the killer. These two movies play a great role of what could happen to you if you spy on other people and see something you never should have seen.
