“New Teachers and Help Aids”
Axia University of Phoenix
As many new teachers start their first years it is a new thing to them and not what they had expected it was best quoted by Betty Ried “Teaching is like getting into the Army. You don't know what you're in for until you get into the classroom.” (Ried 2008) Betty Ried was thankful for the options that they still give first year teachers so they can go forward and help the students through the years of schooling. It is best for the children to learn in a great environment where the teacher is confident and able to give all they can to the students. If a teacher is not as confident as they should be the students could lose respect for them or not feel like they cannot learn from them. It is not a good environment for the student or the teachers.
There is a lot of stress and frustration when you think that things will go one way with way you planned on teaching your class then how can turn out. With knowing you have options to broaden your experience is a great tool for the new year teachers. The few options that they offer is the Mentoring Programs where they are mentored by experienced teachers and see how they teach the students so it is a little hands on learning while watching someone who has many years of teaching. Another option is an induction program where first and second year are evaluated and supported by the districts to help improve or help new teachers out so they work together to make the district better. The difference on how these two programs work on making education better for the students is great thing to have.
Mentoring and Induction are two great programs on helping teachers reach their potential that will keep schools productive also a great experience for the students. The programs are close to being effective to have help from a veteran teacher and having their help to see how they taught their class with the outcomes can help any new teacher take notes and make it into their own way and how it would flow better in the classroom with the students. A good way to explain how mentoring could help is said by Thomas "With teaching, you never know what's going to happen. You handle between 26 and 30 kids on any given day. There are things kids say that will floor you. They will astound you. There will be a day when a kid struggles to learn . . . then the fireworks go off. They get it. To be able to be a part of that, there's no other job like it." (Riel 2008) He best explains how things are different everyday because no student or experience is the same. For the induction this is great for teachers that are new because they are watched with how they teach the students and interact with them also the district and other teachers help the new teacher succeed and not fail.
To be a first year teacher you need support from the district, other teachers and school to let you know what is happening and if you are struggling and how to help them push through. As a support that they do with the programs is give feedback and advice, they let the new teachers know that they have been there and understand how they are feeling with this try and show the support that they are there for them. To ask questions of things that they are not sure of and how to do it better and take what they say and try to see how they can make it work also do the best they can.
As many of new teachers end up getting overwhelmed with how things were different from what they thought it is always great to have a professional that can take them under their wing and share their experience with the new teachers. As a professional I would take on a mentoring program to try and help the new teachers succeed and feel like they can do it even though it seems to be overwhelming and guide them the best I could without feeling like I was telling them what to do. I would allow them to ask all the questions that they need to ask to get an understanding also let them sit back and observe on how I teach the classroom and show them that even with a teacher who has been doing this for say ten years still have their issues they have to deal with. As in issues that can happen is students seem to be more out spoken and louder than the day before where they seem to be more defiant and show how I would handle the students without feeling like it can’t be done and overwhelming. As doing so having this first year teacher sitting with me more than day would show it is never the same day in and day out it is how you handle yourself with the students.
As looking up these programs that are offered to the new teachers to help out there is a lot of great opportunities offered in them. The programs give a lot of hope to new teachers to feel like they can go forward and show they can be a teacher that they always wanted to be. With some of the program there are some things that are not offered that should be like the mentoring how they only do a few a year what about the teachers that wanted to do the program but did not get picked cause all the positions were filled, if they had more veteran teachers that would love to help out with new teachers they should allow that so more new teachers could have that opportunity. I seem like it is a great program and could show the progress that is needed not from sitting in school and learning but from first hand on how a teacher works and what needs to be done. As for the other program they do a lot with observing and evaluating also bringing in the district to make things better, in some way on how they are so overbearing on new teachers which is understandable cause of the protection of the students if they could work with the new teachers it would take some stress of the teacher on feeling like they are judged.
As a new teacher is will always be difficult to make your first year what you wanted it to be without anything to go wrong it is best to take it one day at a time and learn from the mistakes that happen and take any advice even if you feel like you don’t need it. Teaching is a blessing and privilege and should be looked at it in that way.
