a. Explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by a range of personal factors Children and young people development mostly if not decently is influenced by result of family, social-economic, psychological, and environmental, but most commonly involves an interaction among them all. Personal factors and conditions are those that make up the child's inner world, an understanding of life and the world as such, and his place in all this. Whether the world is something that is black and scary, from which should be avoided and must be over cautious or just vice versa, that the world is a friendly, that it can trust that we have the necessary and welcome. From birth child's self-esteem begins with what they receive from their parents, their home surroundings, and most importantly emotional status of mother. Inability to provide safe environment will affect child’s capability to engage in any social activities. Child's self-esteem is a reliable basis for healthy growth and development in all areas - social, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual. b. Explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by a range of external factors The external factors that affect a child's development are: technology, economy, and different vices 1. Technology can influence both ways. Special internet and TV. We are a screen and connection culture. The movie screen has been followed by the television screen, which became a computer screen, and is now downsized to a cell phone screen. Today, young people spend a large portion of their waking hours in front of one or another screen. Positive side of this is that in their homes, children and youth now have as immediate access to information as well as schools and libraries. Science, literature, history, drama and the arts are all at their fingertips. It also influences all the communication part. The Internet and cell phone have made communication with peer’s instant, possible at all times. Children grow up faster, technology smarter and way more independent from parents and adults in general. Of course other researchers show that as a result to Play indoors, one in three children are developmentally delayed at school entry, one in four obese, and one in six elementary aged have a diagnosed mental illness. 2. Economical factors, like money is important that Childs family or schools at this matter, would have necessary funds to support music lessons, art classes, children's clubs, athletic opportunities, or other extra-curricular activities that provide kids with opportunities for social development. . c. Explain how to monitor children and young people’s development using different methods To monitor physical, emotional, behavioral as well as speech and language difficulties I would have to mention both summative and formative methods. Formal testing - SATS. This would record a Childs academic intellectual development. And Formative methods: (different child observational methods) target child, tick box checklists, time sampling. All would be used in different settings and for different purposes. Teaching assistants may be asked to observe a child whose development is causing concern and feedback to the teacher. It is important to that such information would always be recorded that includes outcome of your findings. Feedbacks should be given to parents and the teacher, according to role of person making the observations. To complete the job, compared observation of SATS , any other testing results against the expected norms and milestones, expected development at certain age and use feedback from parents (any concerns shared at home) to then check with class teacher, who would discuss with SENCO in school. That would lead to discussion to look if any school action, school action plus and SEN interventions were required! All of this can be done any with permission of parents or guardians. With an older child (according to his age and understanding) you would need to involve them in any assessment of their development - so recording their feelings wishes and views. Check your observations different contexts (depending on which areas of their development you are looking at. For example: social developments observe in playground, in group and individual settings. It would be very important to take into account their culture background and are there any issues with that. A young person may have English as second language needs but these may not be creating delayed development if he or she may not be delayed in areas of their development such as when using their first language and vice verse. d. Explain the reasons why children and young people’s development may not follow the expected pattern Main reasons are THE Risk factors. Each child will develop at different rate, even though, unfortunately some families cannot promoting the development of child because of the conflict among the parents. Many times a single parent has difficulties in boosting a better development in children and young people. Environmental factors are playing big role in Childs development. If a child’s house is not maintained in a proper way it negatively affects their developments. If a house does not have proper heating condition and has dampness, it may cause illness to child. Negative experience in one of these circumstances one way or other will lead to locked brain development. If proper care is not taken, child will fail to meet expected development pattern. . e. Explain how disability may affect development Difficulties at birth, Hearing issues, etc., may lead to certain speech a communication problems later in Childs life. Child or younger person may not be able to participate at an optimal level in the benefits of the ordinary program of the school by reason of personal limitations attributable to sensory defects, mental retardation, communication disorders, neurological, orthopedic or physical impairment or behavioral disorders. f. Explain how multi agency teams work together to support speech, language and communication. The Every Child Matters: Multy agencies teams are all about different government services and agencies working together to meet needs of children and their parents. It includes Speech and Language Development, Auditory Department, SENCO, Health Visitor, Doctors and also CAF Common Assessment Framework. Everybody are teaming up, sharing information and are working together to help children and young people achieve in life. When it comes to supporting speech, language and communication skills NHS, Parent Partnership Service and Speech /Language Therapy Services comes in to determine Childs needs. They will decide the best approach and will provide consultation for parents and teachers. g. Explain how different types of transitions can affect children and young people’s development Children face transitions with a variety of experience, some positive some negative. They will nearly always be anxious. Faced with some unexpected transitions, like divorce or death, they may feel rejected or guilty, angry or unbearably sad. It can also express like sleeplessness -waking in the night, getting upset at bedtime, nightmares. In older children: self harm- cutting themselves, taking drugs, risky behavior (bets/dares), depression- lack of appetite, anorexia, bulimia tearfulness, sadness. Awareness of their experience and what might be going through their little heads, giving a sensitive response should help bring them through so that transition leads to a stronger, more confident and rounded individual. h. Explain ways in which children and young people can experience prejudice and discrimination Discrimination and prejudice is when someone is treated differently just because of who they are and where they come from. Prejudice- Prejudgment is a negative feeling or attitude towards other person, based on stereotypical assumptions, having no information or misinformation about them. It is making up our minds about something or someone before we have any personal experience about it or them. Prejudices may be influenced by our wish to conform and follow others, by our vulnerability, upbringing, family attitudes, and friends or by ignorance. Discrimination is a behavior or action based on prejudice. Discrimination is the final result when someone is treated badly because they are different. The term has legal status. It is referring to unfair treatment based on membership of a certain group, which is defined in terms of race, religion/belief, gender, sexuality, disability, low income etc. Children and young people may experience direct discrimination or indirect discrimination Children and young people mostly can experience it at schools, shops and playgrounds. i. Explain how to challenge discrimination. When discrimination happens it may be intentional, but it can also be cause of ignorance and lack of understanding. Children and young people should be educated about stereotypes and wary of judgment over others. They need to be taught to see other views and understand them. To be taught of different cultures to keep open mind and to learn from differences in people. Communication, tolerance and respect are the best way to overcome prejudice and discrimination. All of it starts at home and school. School policies must make it clear, that none of the harassment will be tolerated. Children should always report if they have come across any of these issues. Only by challenge of the situations changes can be made. j. Explain what is meant by inclusion and inclusive practices Inclusive practice is a process of identifying, understanding and breaking down barriers to participation and belonging. Inclusion is about ensuring that children and young people, whatever their background or situation, are able to participate fully in all aspects of the life of the school. Inclusive practices will ensure that everyone feels valued and has a sense of belonging. Inclusion is about providing the same opportunities and access to a high quality of education. In an inclusive environment there is recognition, acceptance and celebration of differences and similarities. An inclusive setting is one which uses a whole-school approach to learning. Barriers are recognized and strategies used to remove them. Where children experience difficulties such as special educational needs or disabilities, there is a an approach which focuses on what the child or young person can do rather than the difficulties they are experiencing k. Identify barriers to children and young people’s participation Barriers and challenges to disabled children and young people’s participation are following areas: training, support and resources; knowledge, understanding process, systems and structures. Identifying and recognizing the barriers and challenges provides a good basis for planning to further disabled children’s participation.
