In my family it was just a little different growing up in Reading, PA. Everything we had it felt like more than what anyone else had, but in reality we did have much. I don’t know if you ever seen or heard of Oakdale homes own by Oakdale Mills in Jamestown NC. I would love to take you there sometime. Well most of the homes seem like they were build in a day, but our home seem like it was build in five hours literally. We had a room called the backroom and a middle room mommy and daddy room and a front with kitchen, but it was home. I can say this in growing up I never really live in the projects even though we didn’t have much and I thought the projects was the worst but it wasn’t. So my mind set of how I perceived things were a little different growing up. I never really looked at black or white or Indians, Latinos, Hispanic differently because they were all in my neighborhood. As a kid everything I did involve either a white kid or Spanish kid. In football I was a running back my friend Scotty was the quarterback who happen to be white, but he was the best quarterback in all of football because we never lost a game. I guess you could say I see culture and family a little different than some people see it. I enjoyed the football team and basketball team it was more than just a family to me. It was also about growing up learning each other culture and how things were done. Some of us did more than just play sports together we shared our value and our beliefs together. Some things we talked about were positive and some were negative. For instance, my friend Carlos was Hispanic and his mother believe that we should never wear hats in the house and always come to the table dressed up. I mean a nice shirt and pants sometimes a necktie on before you eat. I thought this was a little crazy, but it was how Mrs. Hector did things at their home and I respected that as a child. I guess you could say they had culture sensitivity. In any case we had fun growing up. As of now I am the youngest of seven children five brothers and one sister who’s older than all of us. It was fun growing up among the trees my brothers and sister I call the trees because they were much bigger than me. Christmas was my biggest time of the year with my family we shared gifts we ate, and immediately after we would all come together and watch its A Wonder Life with stars like James Stewart, and Drew Barrymore’s father Lionel Barrymore. During the time of thanksgiving I never really look at it the way my parents did they gave food to the needy. I thought thanksgiving was a time to enjoy your family. I mean I loved the fact that each year someone different in my family would cut the turkey and say grace. However, as the years progressed and we all gotten older and thanksgiving became the biggest time of the year for me. It was a time where my parents and I would go out with boxes of food and give to those that need it most. I felt so moved by my parents doing this every year and now it’s become a part of my life. So now every year I reach out to those that are in need. Over the years I can truly say that I have learned a lot from my childhood to my adulthood through different family cultures.
