James Kinyanjui En 100-05 Amber Walker 02/16/2011 THE FLYING MACHINE It has been half an hour staring at this unbelievably beautiful piece of art before my eyes!! “Whoever thought of this let alone making it must have been a genius,” I think to myself. I marvel at the professional and wonderful curvature of its magnificent structure. It almost resembles a giant white dove. It seems impossible, to me, that this enormous bird can even move. The paint is shiny with high gloss, looks so new, no scratches, chips or fading. All glass is completely clear with no scratches! It seems so smooth with a silver finish and it really looks valuable, almost untouchable. The tail rises above from behind like a tower casting a shadow over a wide area. The wings, which one would easily confuse for a two hundred meters running track project from the mainframe with a slight backward tilt giving it the perfect shape of a bird. On them are attached four round-shaped large objects which hang below like fruits, I immediately presumed these are engines' From a distance, I can tell they are so big that a man can fit in comfortably while standing. “What could be possibly supporting all these'” I ask myself. As I look beneath, I can’t believe what I am seeing at this point! I count the wheels one by one and count a total of twenty two wheels! Judging from the proportionality of the truck parked beside, they seem to be bigger than the truck!!The axle rises from the wheels and holds the gigantic body frame. I wonder of which material it is made of! My attention shifts to a yellow flickering light in a rapid rhythm on the tip of the wing. I notice a similar one on the very top of the tail only this one is blue in color. The two flicker in sequence as though dancing to a beat. Small windows line up the whole body like small unending holes. As I look around, I notice so many people wearing green helmets and orange aprons around this great art. Every one of them seems to be busy working. I especially notice a small tanker beneath the wing with the words TRANS JETFUEL LTD. Inscribed on it. The men are trying to attach the pipe to the wing and on the rear another tanker is there with a pipe attached to the rear end. The noise the two trucks are producing is too loud, I can’t help asking myself how this people work with all that and they seem to have no any form of protection for their ears. I also notice that attached to the front set of wheels, is a small vehicle very low to the ground as if it has no wheels at all. I immediately brush out the imagination that this vehicle is meant to pull this giant, it seems quite impossible to me. On the right side somewhere near the rear is a flight of stairs attached to its body. It looks so high; I estimate it to be four stories high! It takes me a while to realize that attached to them are not only wheels but a customized vehicle. I can’t wait to go inside! “We are going inside gentlemen!” Our guide says as if he has been reading my mind all along. As we go up the stairs am certain am in for more surprises. As we enter inside a fresh wave of fragrance with the smell of crisp apples with a hint of cinnamon spice hits us and I can’t help taking three long breaths! The temperature inside is just perfect and the air notably fresh. The interior is nothing I have seen before! It’s no match for any luxury hotel I know of! The seats are white and clean made of leather. The leg space is big enough to fit in another seat but this is first class, we are informed. The cabin is painted cream with perfect lighting. There is a fourteen inch screen fitted for each passenger and with a touch of button on the armrest, the screen disappears. Another button on the left inclines the seat making it a bed that is big enough for two. At this juncture I can’t believe what I am looking at! A flight of stairs leading to an upper deck!!!This thing is just too big. I notice the thin coat of gold lining the rails and it’s just amazingly beautiful!!The whole staircase seems to have been made of gold and silver! We go upstairs and beautiful illuminated signs reading different directions hang above. The upper deck, we are informed, is the economy and though it’s not as elegant as the previous, it’s well above anything you would call standard. The seats arranged in a fashionable way, it looks like a long single cabin train! On my right I read a sign reading 'restroom' and decide to pop in. The restroom facilities are no different from what you would find in a 5 star hotel! It is big enough and the bathroom facilities are just amazing. I count five bath tabs and a sauna on-board too! A narrow door by the staircase leads us to the gym! A fully equipped gym and the size of an average gym complete with treadmills, home gyms, elliptical, bikes, rowers just to mention but a few. Everything seems to be new and shiny. An elevator is at the corner for easier access from the lower deck. I notice that all the doors are golden in color with the instruction “PUSH THE BLUE BUTTON TO OPEN” and a picture illustrating the same below the words. As we make our way towards the front, I can hear a faint sound and feel a slight vibration on the floor! I decide to peep through a window and immediately notice a jet of dark smoke coming out of the engines. “That explains the vibrations and the sound,” I think to myself. When the cockpit door is opened we all gasp in surprise! The setting looks like some kind of a video game! Millions, I guess, of flickering lights in all colors, screens showing different graphs and buttons seem to flood every part of the cockpit. On the front panel are two 'joysticks' each on the left and right hand side. I can hear virtually thousands of beeps simultaneously with every pushed button. I ask the guide if I can just feel one of the 'joysticks' and he tells me to go ahead. He informs us that that is what pilots use to move the rear part of the tail which he calls 'rudder’. I hold it and move it slightly but to my surprise, I hardly use any energy to move it! It just needs a slight touch and moves smoothly along! I can’t believe our tour has ended! I wish they could let me play with the 'joystick' longer, is the wish that I take home. Our national carrier, Kenya Airways always rewards bright high school aviation students and being chosen on the 1st November,2009 for the tour of the world’s largest and technologically advanced airliner, the airline’s first and only Airbus A380 will remain a treasured experience in my life, being the first one of all high school aviation students in our country!!
