My Career Choice
By choosing the Human Services field it became very rewarding for me. First of all, I had a chance to learn about myself, mentally, spiritually and physically. I personally found out through trail and error that it was important that I work on my inner self. Dealing with my repressed issue – negative childhood memories. To be productive and of maximum service for another person in any field, I would advise everyone to truly self-diagnose themselves, those who are willing and able. By doing this I am now a better person, I have peace, serenity, compassion and love for others and myself. The Human Services field is not easy, there are many burned out employees. In this field we must take time out, vacations and always self evaluate ourselves to resolve our own issues.
I talked to several people in this field, counselors, caseworkers, nurses, psychiatrist, psychologists and administrators. I learned a great deal from these dedicated hard working professionals. From observing and sitting in with counselors and caseworkers I learned different approaches, techniques and skills. I admire Carl Roger’s Humanistic Theory of unconditional positive regard. I love the holistic approach in this field. I am concerned that the whole person should be treated. From the doctor’s I learned how important it is to deal with my own issues first. Management taught me that in order to make money in this field I will have to earn my B.A., Masters, and a Ph.D. Now would you agree that nothing is impossible with hard work and determination' How far will I go, right now my main concerns are getting my Alcohol/Drug Certificate then my A.A. From there my plans are to transfer to a university.
I have been in the Human Services field about ten years. From working at the V.A. Hospital in Customer Service, by visiting patients’ bedside or communicating with people inside and outside of the hospital. Also helping the nurses in Intensive Care Units and on different wards. I managed a Recovery Home dealing with 40 to 60 individuals who had substance abuse problems. In this particular job I got burned out quickly. The reason that happed was because I had unresolved issues. I worked as a supervisor for Volunteers of America Drop In Center. From the moment I got to work, I was dealing with 200 to 500 individuals, from homeless, mentally ill, runaways, addicts and different cultures. Now I have increased knowledge in this field, and I am learning more each day. To help someone in his or her time of difficulty is very rewarding for me. I have had plenty of jobs to make ends meet, but nothing ever fulfilling until I got into Human Services.
Helping those who are less fortunate and those who need assistance is the most gratifying feeling in the world. To give someone hope with just kind words and understanding means so much. It saddens me to see someone suffering, if I can help in any way, than I am your man. What helps me the most is believing in a powerful good spirit who I choose to call “FATHER ALL MIGHTY”, my Lord and Savior, who I know gives me hope, love, patience, mercy and compassion to serve and do HIS will. I know everyone doesn’t believe as I do and I will never try to convince them. My career was set before I was born; it just took me a little longer to find out. When I did, I knew this was my calling or purpose to serve others. To write about my career and the direction I am going in, helps me see clearly my visions and goals that I am willing to work on and achieve. The more I learn in this field the more skills and techniques I can apply.
My future is committed to serve in the Human Services field. Whichever capacities I serve in I pledge to do my best. I found my purpose in life by giving myself to others. If I chose to change my career, Dr. Blum, you will be the first to know. At this point my focus is on helping others. I am really not placing a monetary value on my choice of career, but on an inner peaceful soul. I ask myself this, am I satisfied with my life, do I have what I want in life' To be honest no, I would like to have more financial security for retirement. I am not looking forward to that time, but planning it for my family and me. I cannot stop the aging process, but I can enjoy life one day at a time. I would like to thank the Health Care Providers for their time and patience; Exodus Recovery Inc., Brotman Memorial Hospital, Rochester Foundation, SCHARP Oasis House, L.A City College, and Volunteers of America Corp.
