My_Angel

My Angel. He scowled at him from across the room with a look of utter loathing upon his face. Katie quickly looked at her husband to see how he would react, but he had already turned away, his lips pursed, visibly upset. She turned back; overcome with relief, as she was sure her husband would react. But that sense of relief left her as quickly as it had come when she heard his voice. “Some people aren’t as they seem to be, don’t you think'” Katie’s husband fired at the guest, an evil smirk creeping up onto his lips. “I mean, they act in one way then later on reveal their true colours,” he finished off. Katie froze in her seat. Her father and husband were glaring at each other, sparks flying from their eyes. The guest was blabbering in the background, completely oblivious to the tension in the room. “Please, please don’t respond,” she thought desperately. Her head began to spin, mouth dry as she looked from one to the other. She gripped the couch, on the verge of tears, as she saw her father open his mouth to respond. “Oh... is that how you define a hypocrite' Well thanks for setting the perfect example,” he launched back across the room and with it a cold, piercing look that was sure to send a quiver up his spine. Katie never understood why her husband and father never liked each other. On the surface it was all smiles and hugs, but the important thing was what was inside their hearts. For these two men it was all hatred. From the corner of her eye she saw her husband shift in his seat and stiffen up. “HOW DARE...” he bellowed but the rest was lost in the air as her head was spinning so violently she felt nauseous. Heart racing, temperature rising, she instinctively placed her arms across the her stomach, trying to protect her unborn baby. She couldn’t take it, their bickering was overwhelming. She had to escape this torture cell that she was in. SHE WANTED OUT. All of a sudden, she found herself on her feet. “SHUT UP, JUST SHUT UP,” she heard someone scream before realising that it was her own voice. “I can’t stand this anymore. You’re so arrogant, the both of you. You don’t care about how I feel. You don’t care about this baby inside of me.” She stopped to regain her breath and wipe away the tears that were gushing down. There was a deadly silence around her but she couldn’t stop there. “You don’t seem bothered that this baby isn’t going to survive after birth. All you want to do is argue, argue, and argue. GET OVER YOURSELVES FOR ONCE IN YOU LIVES.” “I’M ALL ALONE.” She stormed out and slammed the door behind her, determined to shut out everything that had just happened, but painful thoughts were flooding into her head, adding to the agony in her heart. “Why me' What have I done to deserve this' Why is everyone turning against me when I need them the most'” She crossed through the long, dark corridor into an equally dark room and slumped onto the bed. “What do I do' How can I live when two of the most important people in my life have come to blows' Is this how life is supposed to be' Does everyone suffer like I’ve suffered' Was there any point of living this cruel life'” She wondered, trying to find the answers to all her questions. Wiping the tears from her eyes, she peered around and stared at herself in the mirror. “Yes. There is someone who is worth this suffering. Someone who feeds from me, who I protect, who is a part of me. Someone who would die without my constant care. My baby. My Angel. That was all I had to live for. My baby was the reason I continued to put up with this life, the only reason that I had not given in, all just to see her...” The memories of the past week surged back into her head. She tried to block them out but it was becoming more painful with every passing second. The hospital, the doctor, the reports telling her that her angel that she had her heart set upon for so long, was going to survive for only two hours after birth. Two hours. That’s all she had been given. A few days ago, she couldn’t believe it. She didn’t want to believe it. But now, she had promised herself that she would do as much as possible in the two hours she had. It was not what she had dreamed about, not what she wished for day after day. But she was going to take what she was given. “I promise you Angel, I’ll make you happy in the time we have together,” Katie muttered softly as she caressed her stomach. “I will look after you, even if the world doesn’t care about us. I won’t let them take you away from me, I’ll hold onto you for…” but she couldn’t bring myself to finish off the sentence. “It’s just me and you now, Angel. All alone, with no one to bother us.” She relaxed as the gentle words, said goodbye to her soft pink lips, and the capacity of her pure heart was filled with love and tenderness. “Just me and my Angel.”
