The sports minister branded footballers wages as ‘obscene’ the ‘Speak Sport’ radio show has invited listeners to offer their opinions on footballers wages.
A. Contribution that opposes footballers wages.
Hi to all on speak sport; I have been listening to your radio show for more than 6 months now. I felt dreadful once hearing some of the ridiculous comments defending footballers’ obscene wages. I think that Gerry Sutcliffe is perfectly right in his opinions. The country is currently in a recession; as a result 281,000 people are currently unemployed, whilst footballers are spending outrageous amounts on needless things. Are these managers out of their senses' It is atrocious the amount these men get paid, considering how little their jobs actually contribute to society. I would like to express my feelings on this controversial subject.
To begin with footballers earn on average £676,000 per year this amount is truly inexplicable. It was less than 20 years ago; our footballers earned roughly the same amount as skilled plumbers or electricians. I would like to mention how our country is in an economic crisis. In my child’s school there is a woman who was previously a head nurse in her old country and she is now a cleaner in our country. How can the government allow footballers to earn the shocking amounts when there are people who are finding It hard just to survive. They must take whatever job they can to support their families. Whist the recession is biting ever deeper into the United Kingdom, footballers wages seem to defy reality. The recession surely will not have an effect on footballer’s wages.
As well as this, I would like to compare a nurse’s wages to footballers. Obviously a nurse contributes much more to society than a footballer does. It defies logic that a premier league footballer can earn more in a single week than what an NHS nurse would be paid for up to 6 years of live saving work. Nurses take up huge risks with the job they do, and what do footballers do', they kick a ball around pointlessly. Nurses start their job at £19,000 a year, footballers earn this about in less than a week, and this is truly unfair. Excluding the fact that nurses have university debts to pay off too. These innocent people do not get enough credit for the life-striking work they do. They spend quality time saving the lives of people, not to mention the pressure they are in. Meanwhile footballers are spending extr ordinary amounts on lavish items. Managers and coaches are not even willing to respond to some of these stories. It was no surprise that one 3 players from the whole arsenal team contributed to the mayday nurse fund.
In addition to this, I have recently notices how footballers do not set a decent example of being to the public. Footballers may have a greater responsibility in being good role models than anyone else as they are incredibly idolised by youngsters. However footballers seem to do exactly the opposite such as mascherano who was fined £20,00 for using foul language on the pitch. I have only mentioned one footballer; there are many more who are similar. When footballers behave in such manners, it makes it so much more difficult for parents, schools, the police and the government to teach respect and discipline to young citizens if some of our children’s biggest role models are teaching them the complete opposite. It makes it incredibly hard to tackle anti-social behaviour. Footballers are also suspected to be abusive and intimidating once referees make decisions on the pitch, this is an issue, which occurs in every single match. I am certain that parents would not want to show their teenagers this as an example of being. Is this high salary a dangerous influence to the youth'
Moreover, most footballers are way too young to be in such major careers. For most people locked in a average career sort of life, getting decent money is what happens after you have worker hard and successfully for years. Yet these footballers are given money beyond anything we could ever hope for and they have never put in the years of graft. Somone opposing me would say that ‘ it takes years of training for footballers to become what they are’ although working class people have years of education and learning until they can find a decent job and salary. Most footballers are only half educated, for example Christiano Ronaldo was only educated till the eleventh grade.
As I keep stating how high these rum wages actually are, many could argue that it is you and I who pay for the pleasure of football in admission money, television licesnses, and sky subscription. What about those people who do not have the time to take an interest in football because they are too busy with their working life, to earn money to survive. These wages are just obscene and immoral. These wages make a mockery of ordinary hard-working people who earn low wages to service industries so that people like this can live off them.
Conclusively, I am outraged by the fact that ther are people out there who actually support footballers’ wages. It is these staggering amounts which stunn me because I see football as a reward, hobby, relaxation after a hard week of work. Millions around the worls are dying of starvation whilst foobtllaers enjoy spending thousands on needless items. I am definitely not sorry to say that obserd is the only adjective to describe footballers extremely high wages.
B. Contribution that supports footballers wages.
Hello there ‘Speak Sport’ I must say that I completely disapprove of the last caller, it stuns me that a person can feel so strongly about such a contraversial subject. Does this caller not realise that the average footballer retired at the age of 40' While ordinary working class citizens carry on their careers till 60. Footballers are jobless and can not keep living of their salary for the rest of their life. Especially non-premier legue players. The premiership player deserve these astronimical wages. I would like to express my views on this subject.
It is ironik that many citizens only tend to talk about how footballers wages are so high, yet I guarantee not any of these people would turn down a pay rise. Nobody ever mentions the extraordinary amounts that rockstars, actors, and singers earn each year. It is completely unfair to single out footballers. Some actors are paid £767, 000 a year, sompared to the average footballer’s wage this is exceedingly high. Jo wiley, from BBC radio 1, stated yesterday “ It is all jealousy, if you don’t like the prices don’t go to the games, give up your sky subscription, there will always be someone earning more thatn you, for doing what you percieve as less” I honestly do not feel hesitant to stand by Jo wiley, as what he say’s is the truth. If citizens do not like the high wages then why have sky subscription and watch the football matches'.
Secondly, I would like to mention that footballer’s are not only sports men, they are also entertainers, the best entertainers to millions around the world. They should most definitely be rewarded for their persevereance. They dedicate their entire lives to this sport to entertain fans around the world and yet there are people who crticize their work.It is these players who have dedicated their full lives to their job which involves harsh training and the maintenance of physical fitness through intense daily training so he has to be under the pressure of their trainer who requires them to be completely fit and train strictly. Those who accuse footballer’s of being over-paid have no ecperience about what the premier league revolves around. Footballers must fit their whole personal life around their career. Around 66% of the average footballer trains 7 days a week, it is complicated to fit a social, personal life around such a cruicial life. It is these men who devote almost everything to entertain us all, yet many have the nerve to oppose them.
I have come to notice that the games footballer’s play, are played at an extremely fast pace. The proffessionals playing are under such pressure exerted from their instructor that enthusiasm is common. Not only do footballer’s have pressure during games, they also have pressure from the audience, they have always to play correctly and not make any mistake so that the media and the public will not criticize them. A single error would represent a possible end of the career of that player. Newspapers, magazines, and the Internet always have something to say. No one realises how many articles are over-exaggerated and maybe even changed. The media manipulates what we read about and this taints our opinions. Ashley Cole sued two national newspapers for libel amid claims about the sexuality of two unnamed footballers. This player’s should earn exactly the amount they do, because of what they go through.
Finally, I find it irritating how people who diaprove of footballer’s wages never seem to see the positive side of high wages. Talent pays more than social position, the majority of footballer’s come from working class backgrounds and humble origins just like msot of us. Many opposing me would say “footballer’s earn vast amounts for playing a ninety minute game, whereas working class people like us work for 7 days a week,” I would argue against them by saying that is it not hard to understand that footballer’s train for seven days a week'. Physically exhausting hard work. Footballers must also keep a very healthy and nutritional diet, they can not ‘eat out’ or have ‘take away’ like many of us do on week-ends. They work just as hard as the rest of us, if not then more. In addition to this, we have to consider the fact that the age of retirement for a professional football player is of about 30-40 years (depending of the physical state of the player) which means that this person relies on the money he has gained in his short lifetime as a professional footballer therefore football players need the money for the future so they can sustain themselves and their future generations.
To conclude, footballers high wages should stay exactly the way they are. As it is these men who show children of the world that it is okay to dream and than hard work pays off. Years and years of training should most definitely be rewarded. I just hope that the listeners out there can see my perspective, most other businesses, organisations, are allowed to set their salaries for their own clubs, so why should footballers wages be any different'
