Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart. Kahlil Gibran
There is a time in everybody’s life when they look in the mirror and feel ugly. It might be that they are aging, that they are still being plagued by teenage acne, or the fact that they absolutely hate the size of their thighs.
Let’s face it, in today’s body obsessed society nobody is satisfied with anything short of perfection. The media has created an unrealistic image of beauty that everyone is forced to abide to. The perfect woman must be skinny, have no cellulite, have amazing hair and they must have an impeccably pretty face with a tanned and flawless skin to match.
Why has our society become so wrapped around physical appearance, and not care about what’s inside'
Marilyn Monroe once said "Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
Such a profound statement made by one of Hollywood’s most legendary beauty’s.
But, although she seemed so beautiful, even Marilyn Monroe had everything on the outside but, came to her untimely death fighting her demons on the inside.
The media preaches inner beauty is important, then turns around and tells us to go under the knife to find it. "Beauty on the inside is far more inferior than beauty on the outside!" That is The famous-clichéd cry, then the cameras cut to before-and-after pictures of a makeover – as if something from a bottle can reach a person’s soul.
Does inner beauty really exist among all this superficial paranoia'
On 11 April 2009, a nervous, unattractive, frumpish 48 year old woman stepped on the terrifying stage of Britain’s got talent. Everybody, judging Susan Boyle by her outer appearance, expected yet another wannabe singer to make a fool of herself. Despite the audience's initial cynical attitude, for most of them that was one on of the "biggest wake-up calls ever" they had ever received. Boyle stunned the audience with her powerful, angelic, voice. The utter shock on Simon’ Cowell’s face was absolutely priceless.
Almost 2 years later, instead of her small abode lifestyle, Boyle is living the dream
Her first album, I Dreamed a Dream, in only six weeks of sales, became the biggest selling album in the world for 2009, selling 9 million copies. In September 2010, Boyle was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as having had the fastest selling debut album by a female artist in the UK, the most successful first week sales of a debut album in the UK, and was also awarded the record for being the oldest person to reach number one with a debut album in the UK.
If physical
If therefore, as societies’ standards of beauty are so unattainable, perhaps it is time to consider the true essence of beauty, which doesn’t rely on punishing beauty treatments, cosmetic procedures or masks of makeup. Perhaps it is time to consider that beauty really does come from within.
Inner beauty is character: integrity and maturity, graciousness in a messy situation, bravery in desperate times, and selflessness in a world of selfish people. The woman who exudes inner beauty is the woman who is in total possession of herself, yet lives outside of her body when she is with other people, with no thought of what other people might be thinking of her.
Women like Mother Teresa and Princess Diana were esteemed and loved for their inner beauty. Mother Teresa’s wrinkled face did not hide the beauty within, evident through her care for the poorest of the poor in Calcutta. The world recognized her worth with a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
We considered Princess Diana to be a beauty from the first pop of the paparazzi flashbulb, but the tilt of her head (humility), her soft-spoken speech (gentility), and her charitable heart convinced the world of her inner beauty.
So, what's a true beauty'
Beauty is the combination of all the qualities of a person or thing that delight the senses and mind. It's not purely about physical beauty because it's a relative thing. Someone says that I'm beauty, perhaps another says not. That's relative. Be who you are. Be guided by your inner soul rather than blindly following trends and blind performance. Choose products for your style and need like makeup, personal care, apparel, or another things on what gives you inner joy.
However, even with the best will in the world, nobody is ever going to achieve this state of being. Even the most beautiful supermodel or celebrity in the world will undoubtedly have their hang-ups.
And feel the confidence within. While you can fake it for a while, unless you feel confident in your own skin, it will not give you long-term happiness.
