Where I live isn’t much of anything. The neighbors are great, but only amongst themselves. I sit in the sandbox making what I can out of the loose fragments, while the boys and girls play outside together in harmony. They run and fall and laugh and cry and they are all fond of these mixed feelings. The sandbox suits me. It’s itchy, annoying, gross and plain. Sand is whatever and sits there. It’s a depressing day, like every day, the sun only seems to shine every once in a while here in Seattle. This suits me as well. My so-called parents named me Calleo. They don’t praise me like they do my brothers. I don’t cause trouble like them. My brothers are arrogant, and that’s all you need to know about them. Nobody seems to understand me; who needs them.
School is just a phase of my life that I have to go through whether I like it or not. I walk there every morning. The bus wasn’t my friend. The students on the bus were egotistical and into themselves. They weren’t attentive of their surrounding and didn’t care of what others thought about them; took no one into consideration. Jerks. My classes through the day weren’t much different. I liked to sit in the front when there was a free seat, but the back was fine. I pay attention better anyways. It worked.
There only seemed to be one thing, and one thing only that I enjoyed about my school days. Adair was the one who pleased me. She was lovely with her flowing, long, dark hair along with her dusky complexion. Her brown eyes were the first thing that caught mine. They were irresistible. Unfavorably, Demi holds her heart. Damieon was his name, but he preferred Demi. He played with her emotions as if they were a measly toy, like a yo-yo perhaps or a seesaw. She knows of his wrongdoings, yet she crawls back. I don’t understand. I give her a rose holding my affections for her. She lets the delicate flower fall upon the ground with such force and abomination as she runs into the arms of Demi Campbell. Hate is not the word that describes the relationship between my thoughts and him; it is more extreme than what it is.
My walks from school are normally pleasant, unless I spot Adair and Demi or watching kids looking at me funny, then I’m just neutral. Self-esteem is overrated. I have none.
I notice the same woodsy, mysterious scene every day. Large trees with mounds of brush and wild flowers border it. It must be a forbidden place to go. I’ve never seen anyone approach the forest. My curiosity overcomes me one day and I venture into this uncharted woodland. Humph, it doesn’t appear to be any different than all the other ones. There’s the poison ivy lining the bark of the large never-ending trees, the uplifting roots from the ground haunting your every step, the sound of the critters that create chills down your spine. Typical, I like it. This will be my true home. This will be where I belong.
I spend most of my precious time exploring these new grounds. I made my own pathways leading to unknown places. I’ve found peculiar things that were only seen in books. Made discoveries and living my childhood like it should be lived. No one bothered me, and I was alone. I was happy. The animals were my friends, the only ones I got along with. In the midst of all this was one pond.
The pond was mucky with the algae. It had one spot clear enough for the beasts of the forest to drink. It had one spot clear enough to make my mind go crazy. I could not put my finger on it, but I saw this face that was hovered near the pool. I found him every time I came near the pond, like a stalker of some sort. He was a younger boy like me with a pale face and piercing blue eyes. When I asked him his name, he just stared back into my eyes with a dispassionate sentiment. I gave him the name Rowley.
Rowley was my best friend. I spoke to him every day and when I came looking for him at the pond, there he was. He laughed at all my jokes, and cried about the same issues we faced. He never disappointed me when I needed someone to talk to. He experienced the same troubles, emotions I did. He knew Adair and Demi, my mother, my father, my brothers, my neighbors. It was strange, it’s like he understood everything I was telling him. He was simple to locate and it became even easier to find to him during the fall. He was just like me in almost every single way. Like I said, he was my best friend.
The leaves began to fall and created charming combination of colors all over the community. When I made my daily visits to Rowley, I noticed the leaves were falling upon the pond, which disrupted our conversations. I envied the leaves. They lived on a tree growing a vibrant green in the spring and summer, faded to a brown, red, or orange later in the fall, and then fell gracefully upon the pool and floated on the top. No worries, no nothing. I wanted to be like them, the leaves. Both I and Rowley wanted to be like them. We wanted to swim with them.
The next day was the day we dedicated to swimming with the leaves. When I looked in the pond, I noticed Rowley was already floating with the leaves. It was my turn to jump in. The icy water penetrated through my skin and into my bones. I couldn’t swim. I flailed my hands yelling for Rowley. “Help, help” But he didn’t help me. My lungs were filled with the unclean, wintry water. I felt myself stop breathing and slowing start sinking.
What happened to floating amid the leaves with my best friend' What did happen to my friend that I adored' I never saw him. The ripples in the water along with the large amount of leaves limited my view of him. We died and I sank to the very bottom on the pond. I assumed that Rowley fell with me, but I’m not sure. Who knows what my parents did. I don’t think they came out looking for me. Who needs them' I’m dead anyways right'
