Final Paper PHI200: Mind and Machine Final Paper Instructor: Zummuna Davis March, 7, 2011 Final Paper Rough Draft What do you think when hear gay marriage' Do you think gay marriage is a joke' Or is it fair that they can get married…. Do you think that gay marriage is a sin to be gay' Why did they make gay marriage legal' What if you were gay and wanted to get married to your love of your life. What does marriage prove it’s just a piece of paper saying you’re together and you can change your last name to your spouse’s last name but being in a relationship already prove you are with someone and every one already knows it.. How important is it for gay people to get married' Do you think that people have the right to be happy' Gay people can’t have kids. Don’t you think that if God meant for people to be gay he would of created Adam and Steve not Adam and Eve' I grew up in a small country town where it was not accepted by the farmers and people who lived in that county. I never seen or been around gay people before or at least as far as I knew it. I now live in a small city now and still are not friends or around gay people. As a straight woman in my opinion I was raised to think that being gay was not okay and that it is a sin and you would burn in hell if you are gay. But as I was growing up I thought it was gross and that people should not to be allowed to be like that and that they weren’t okay in the head or as my grandmother would say “they had some loose screws in their head”. But now I think that people should be allowed to be happy everyone is entitled to be happy don’t you think so. I also think that if you are gay you should keep it behind closed doors because know one wants to see two gay people kissing and holding hands in public they need to be respectful of others and others need to be respectful to them. I don’t see the point in gay marriage. It says that marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. That is what the law states. It has been said that same-sex couples aren’t the optimum environment in which to raise children. They can’t have kids together and they shouldn’t because they are a couple and it would be like one was cheating on the other if they were to have children because they wouldn’t be able to impregnate the other. If two females want to have a baby how do they have a child together that they both produced' Females do not have sperm and men do not have eggs or uterus’s so how is it not cheating it you have someone else’s baby. I guess it is like unfertile women and men who adopt or find sperm. But they are straight and have tried to make one of their own and they just can’t conceive. Marriage is also for ensuring the continuation of our species for reproduction and making more humans. We are actually overpopulating our planet with humans and anarchy is increasing from it. Then again who is it going to hurt' It’s not going to hurt or bother me every day. And I don’t have to look at it. And like I said they should be happy everyone deserves it. Is it a sin to be gay' In the bible it says “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination” (Leviticus 18:22; see also Leviticus 20:13). Gay relationships are immoral and violate the sacred institution of marriage the bible says. What if it’s a sin' How is this sin different from any other sin like stealing or lying it’s all a sin in the end' In some religions like Buddhism it is okay to be gay and also allowed them to celebrate gay relationships freely and would like to have the authority to make them legal marriages. How is it a sin for men to be with men and women to be with women and even multiple sex partners' How is that different' Here are some reasons it should be allowed gay marriage should be allowed because Gay marriage wouldn’t hurt anybody besides the people getting married and possible the family members of the people getting married they would be the only one effected to the marriage. They'll all tell you they're in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. Just name the situation, and ask. They'll all say, yes, gays should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, equal protection of the law. "The institution of marriage conveys dignity and respect towards a couple that make a lifetime commitment to support each other. "Same-sex couples deserve this dignity and respect." Also the state and religion are two separate things and should not have influence on one another because they are separate in the U.S. In the end if people think it’s a sin it doesn’t affect them they are not in the relationship so it is not there sin. Same-sex marriages were legal in California before Proposition 8 passed in November 2008. The initiative supported by 52 percent of voters amended the state Constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman. In the constitution of the United States it says “all men are created equal” so wouldn’t this include gays. If you think that gays shouldn’t be able to get married because they can’t have children then what about all the unfertile women and men who can’t have children. They are still allowed to get married. So why can’t gays. Also what if your love of your life was on life support and your spouse was the one to say whether or not to keep them on it or not wouldn’t you want to have that choice if you were gay and wanted that person not to suffer or give them more time. Being gay is not a choice you can just decide on its just who you are like being straight. The values that such gay couples exhibit in their daily lives are often indistinguishable from those of their straight neighbors. They're loyal to their mates, are monogamous, devoted partners. They value and participate in family life, are committed to making their neighborhoods and communities safer and better places to live, and honor and abide by the law. Many make valuable contributions to their communities, serving on school boards, volunteering in community charities, and trying to be good citizens. In doing so, they take full advantage of their relationship to make not only their own lives better, but those of their neighbors as well. So why is gay marriage legal' Denying marriage to same-sex couples removes from one group a fundamental, important human right the right to marry the person that one loves and to whom one has made a commitment. That is unfair and unjust in a democracy. There are two sexual orientations, though: heterosexual and homosexual. The 1956 research of Dr. Evelyn Hooker, which has been independently verified by numerous experts in Psychology, found that homosexuality isn't a disorder. That means that gay people are just as good as heterosexuals. It means all forms of discrimination against gay people are unscientific. So what we're really talking about here is whether or not heterosexuals should be the only ones allowed to marry. Obviously, if you're a rational person who accepts reality, the answer is "of course not". Marriage is marriage. Gay people marry each other, whether the government or heterosexuals recognize that or not. It's time to end the unnecessary discrimination and follow the Constitution which clearly provides the same rights for gay Americans as are given to heterosexual Americans. In the United States, although same-sex marriages are not recognized federally, same-sex couples can marry in five states and one district (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and the District of Columbia) and receive state-level benefits. The states of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Rhode Island do not facilitate same-sex marriages, but do recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. Additionally, several states offer civil unions or domestic partnerships, granting all or part of the state-level rights and responsibilities of marriage. Thirty-one states have constitutional restrictions limiting marriage to one woman and one man. As we have seen, the arguments against gay marriage don't hold up to close scrutiny. Neither the arguments traditionally raised nor the real feelings of the opponents make much sense when held up to the light of reason. So let's get on with it. Let's get over our aversion to what we oppose for silly, irrational reasons, based on ignorance and faulty assumptions, and make ours a more just and honorable society, finally honoring that last phrase from the Pledge of Allegiance; "With liberty and justice for all."
