When Miami School district announced that in the upcoming year school boundaries will be redraw because of overwhelming and unexpected increases in enrollment, raised major concerns among students, parents, and other parties. Schools plans upsets many students because they could not stay at current location. Parents raised their opinion against school’s proposed plans . Parents are concerned about the quality of education that their children will receive, additional travel time to new location, crossing economical and cultural boundaries, and overall social affects on children. In this paper a developed plan to address stakeholder’s concern as well as styles of negotiation strategies, tactics to support the strategy, and how ethics and culture affect the decisions will be addressed.
The key stakeholders in this case are school district, students , and their parents. Other stakeholders in this scenario are third party experts involved in redrawing the plan, local community, and vendors associated with the school.
The first step will be to identify the basic interest and concerns of each parties involved. Describing the issues or conflicts in details will help to determine the course of negotiations to reach the desired outcome. School board should be more realistic and openly try to identify and understand the main interests of the parents. Parents believe that re zoning the school will reduce the quality of education because of unknown mix environment that children’s are going to route to. By using school bus or parents simply drive them will add travel time to the are which is going to be far away to their residence. Wealthier parents may look at other alternatives such as private school rather to blend their children with lower economic grade students. In other hand, many other parents are also concerned about lower class students may affect the child’ capability to study as well as security concerns that may come up. In the meantime, this issue takes the place of how children deal with diversity and communicates with others. It is impossible to determine how this would affect the kids. Inside many situations, a rezoning of the schools can have both a positive or negative effect on the property standards of the influence region. this issue takes the place of how children deal with diversity and communicates with others. It is impossible to determine how this would affect the kids.
Inside many situations, a rezoning of the schools can have both a positive or negative effect on the property standards of the influence region. Meanwhile, if the lines are redrawn to produce wealthier region into lower economic region however, there will be several of growth within the property standards. Even though conflict can occur within the higher market standards homes, it can decrease in value as lower profits homes that are part of the region. School districts needs to figure out why parents feel the way they do and raining all these concerns.
When addressing the concerns of stakeholders, parents should consider what is the best for their children by priority list. Using negotiation tactics such as collaboration will bring parties closer together as a team and will bring teamwork to the equation to deal with proposed plan by school district. Integrative negotiations will be the ultimate style to be used in this scenario. Parties need to collaborate to find a win-win solution to their dispute. However, parents will be very emotional about re zoning issue so it will be no surprise that they will be aggressive during the negotiation. Assumption is that school will go with this plan regardless of outcome, but what concessions and commitments school can agree to adjust on their plan is the key for this negotiations. It is critical for parents committee decide on priority of interest and rank them properly. The more that school district can understand the needs, values, and the issues from parent’s point of view, the better the chances on reaching agreement on priority list. Not too many alternatives for parents committee in this situation. Using tactics such as discovering school’s points, and what really drives the proposed plan will help the direction of negotiations.
Miami school district will be be well prepared using negotiation planning guide( Lewicki, Saunder, and Barry, negotiations fifth edition) in order to organize the key and important points of their negotiations to cover. Where the school stands on all the issues , where the BATNA is, and what would be the reasonable solutions for all parties involved. School is going to deal with diverse set of opinions from parents related to this issue.
Ethics and culture play an important role in decision. School is for the benefit of socitey as learning institution. It is required for the district to consider all ethical and cultural concerns about rezoning. Within this negotiation procedure, the concern of cultural and inexpensive boundaries and their influence on the student’s could be regard as an unethical concern. Meanwhile the district has to stand their ground and not give in to the authority maintained through those of great financial condition. Please keep in mind this benefit every child not just the one who is wealthy. Every parent has to recognize how different schools may help their child grow. Student has to recognize that this change can help them to understand one another. By understanding, the diverse cultures can assist them respond to resolution that leaner’s has regarding others. It is in the hands of the school district to employ the authority at their disposal to comply with the parents
