Week 7 Assignment: Test Your Leadership Skills
MGT/210
This exercise was interesting, I showed that I am 84 percent leader and 16 percent supervisor. That results were not very surprising because I am typically very caring of others. I do not have the mind set of just thinking of ways to promote show my worth to others in hopes of furthering my career. My expectations of a company is to take notice of how well I handle difficult situations, and promote me because of the good I have done for the company. The questions asked seemed biased, it seemed as if the questions were directed towards whether I was caring of others, or caring of only doing things to make myself look good. I think of myself as a mixture of being a leader and a supervisor. I care about the good of others, but I also care about following company policies, and promoting good behavior from others by the actions I take at work. I believe in promoting fairness and patience, and I also believe that finding new ways to approach difficult situations is important. The supervisory strengths that I believe would be most important are demonstrating communication and improving productivity. I feel that I think as a supervisor when promoting good behavior, but I think as a leader when caring for the well-being of others within the workplace.
It is difficult to think of myself as only being a leader, not that being a leader is bad, I just prefer to think of myself as a caring person who has supervisory skills. I depend on the company to take notice in how I handle situations, such as communicating with others, and always remaining ethical when in the workplace. Working as a leader for a company takes honor, respect, and swift decisions that will always benefit the company. It is important to always put trust in each person to complete their daily tasks in a timely manner. Being a leader is kind of like being the captain of a ship, the captain should always think of the safety of others, and always be the first to enter, and the last to leave. The captain will always look to ensure that all waters are being navigated efficiently.
I would project strengths in into two responsibilities by making sure all employees are treated with fairness and integrity. There are many laws in place to help prevent employees from being treated unfairly, but my personal goal as leader or supervisor would be to ensure that each employee is treated with dignity. When employees are not treated fairly, they begin showing signs of low self-esteem. When employees show low self-esteem they begin making mistakes, and I want to avoid mistakes made in my department. I will encourage each employee to stay focused, and check all their work before moving on to their next task. When associates make mistakes, I will explain the mistake, and give examples of how the employee can further avoid making the same mistakes. I would remain caring with associates, and look for the best workers for possible promotions, but I will remain firm in what I believe is best for the company. Each employee needs to have a strong understanding of what is expected of them, and if associates disregard company policies, they will be disciplined for their actions. Leading a group of people is not an easy task, but remaining firm and fair must be a daily routine for any leader or supervisor.
Although this test did seem biased with most of the questions asked, I still enjoyed reading the results of the test. I did feel as if I have strong leadership and supervisory skills, but learning my strengths and weaknesses was very interesting. I learned that I can be a supervisor, but still maintain leadership skills. I do care about what the company thinks of my performance, but I do not care to only do things to make myself look good as a supervisor. Comparing a supervisor to a captain is very helpful in explaining the roles of a supervisor. The supervisor must act as a captain through ensuring that everyone is completing all their tasks to keep the ship sailing. If the ship sails with little to no discrepancies, the captain or supervisor will begin gaining respect from all others.
