Media Inventory Reflection Paper It is very hard to think that about twenty-five years ago people did not have the types of technology that we have today. While doing this experiment it really opened up my eyes to how much time I waste by sitting in front of the television or computer. It is in some way embarrassing to actually see how much time is wasted when I could have been outside hanging out with friends. When I am watching a show on TV or on the computer I am most of the time alone. Sometimes I will watch a show with a friend or my sister so I have someone to talk to. I play the computer game Sims a lot, to the point where some of my friends think I am addicted to it, and it is a game that you cannot play with other people, it is more of a one person game. I look for entertainment when I watch TV or am on the computer, because that is what is most interesting to me. People look for what interests them, if it doesn’t catch their attention then they will not read about it. My time seeking entertainment does not even compare to how much I seek just information about something in the world. When I get ready in the morning before school I have the TV on in the background and I listen to the news for about an hour and that’s all the news I consume in a day unless someone tells me. It is more interesting to listen to things going on in celebrities’ lives then our own because in a way it makes our life better knowing that their lives are not perfect. When I get ready in the morning I have the TV on Fox 9 news and I listen to that for about a half hour and then I change the channel to ABC Morning News. Fox 9 has more news that is closer to what is happening around my county and then ABC Morning News tells me more about the bigger stories that are happening around the world. Those are the only two channels that I watch about news because I can check their information between the two and get more of the story, because each news station reports the news in a different ways. That can be a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. Since the news stations give the news in different ways then that can be bias and turn the viewer to feel how the news station wants you to feel. Since I only watch an hour a day of actual news I really only know a little bit about what is going on in the world. When my friends are talking about something that happened that they heard on the news, a lot of times I cannot comment on it because I don’t know anything about it. The most technology I use a day would be the computer. I go on Facebook to talk to people and see what is going on in other peoples’ lives. Then I also play the game Sims on the computer. I can spend multiple hours playing Sims, I lose track of time so easily. Sitting in the last hour of the day in school is hard because I just want to go home and play the game before I have to go to work again. My friends think I should really take a break from the game but saying that I will is one thing and then actually doing it is another. As time goes on and people come up with new technology it is very easy to fall into a routine of getting up in the morning, watching TV, checking email, going to school, using computers there, coming home, checking Facebook and watching TV. This is a world of technology, not a lot of people are okay with going through the day without knowing what is going on in the world or what is going on with their friends or favorite celebrities. Weather you know if the information is true or not that is hard to say. Many people know which of the shows are credible and which are not. It is the same with magazines, there are tabloids that are just entertaining with false facts and then there is real magazines that give you real stories. Although I do not watch or read a lot of actual news I would not say that I avoid getting the information, it just simply doesn’t interest me. If it doesn’t happen to someone that I know or to me then I really do not need to know about it. If the information is very important I will hear about it from someone that does pay attention to the news. In order for me to become better informed I would have to change my routine of technology. I would need to watch more news channels that only report hard news and also I would have to read more news in the paper. To be honest I will probably not change the way I use technology that much. It has opened my eyes a lot on how much time I waste when I could have been getting other things done but in this day and age if the technology is there people are just going to get worse about using and abusing it. When you walk down the street and you see 5th graders playing outside, but then something catches your eye, one of them has a cell phone. Is that becoming the norm' Younger and younger kids are getting their hands on technology. How do we stop that' It is a very large circle and it starts when some new big technology gadget comes out into the world. People need to stop and think do they really need to know what is hot and new right then and there. What is going to happen when we do not have those abilities anymore' Just like alcohol and drugs, I think people need to be aware of how they are using technology. We need to know the right way to use it and to not abuse it.
