Statistical Analysis of Belle Isle Leslie Washington, Kelly Lizyness, Ruth Sims, Harold Lang, Willie A. Thompson IV QNT561 March 25, 2013 Jerry Weyand Statistical Analysis of Belle Isle The current financial state of Belle Isle prevents the city from maintaining the normal operations that the park was developed to provide. Team B has set out to gather statistical information that could potentially lead to an increase of attendance and revenue the city needs to improve the park’s attractions. The following document contains information on how Team B will survey people in the Detroit Metropolitan area, rank the information they collect, and classify their findings. Survey Development Mailing surveys is an effective method of data collecting. Team B’s survey that they will use to gather input from the residents of Detroit and surrounding cities to determine what it will take to get people to come out more often. The questions that the survey contains are as follows: 1. Within how many miles of Belle Isle do you live' Knowing where the potential or current resident live will allow team b to see if the challenge is the visitor or potential visitor lives too far. This question will also assist team B in suggesting things that will draw new visitors such as providing transportation (e.g., bus or shuttle) to those wanting to visit Belle Isle without transportation. 2. How often do you visit Belle Isle' This question is very important because it will allow team B to see whom and how often people are visiting Belle Isle. It will also help Team B see what the barriers are for individuals who are not visiting Belle Isle so Team B can try to eliminate the barriers. This question would also help Team B understand who the new visitors are and what they expect from visiting Belle Isle. Team B wants to address the problems visitors have in terms of transportation and other problems. These questions on the survey will allow team B to get a better understanding of what potential visitors want and need in order to visit Belle Isle. 3. Would you visit Belle Isle more often if it had a concert venue' A potential way to get residents to frequent the park is to develop a concert venue. One measure that Team B can use is the outcome from an upcoming music festival that will be on Belle Isle. One of the groups headlining the festival is Metallica. The results from this festival, and research from other concerts in the Detroit area, will provide data to give the city an idea of how much a concert venue can potentially produce for the park. 4. What would be your preferred method of paying to visit Belle Isle' Providing payments options could be the option that the city needs to address the concerns of people not willing to pay a lump sum to frequent the island. Some people may not visit the park enough to want to pay a one-time fee to visit Belle Isle. This question will provide a better scope on what people think is most reasonable for park access. This could also indicate if the fee will prevent people from visiting the park all together. 5. Would you visit Belle Isle more often if it had a permanent police presence' Crime is a major problem for the city of Detroit. According to Christie (2013), there were 342 murders in Detroit and they had the highest rate of assaults of the major US cities. This question looks to address the concern of crime in the city. Team B wants to figure out if a constant police presence will attract more visitors. 6. Would you use a shuttle that offers service to and from Belle Isle from select locations' The idea of incorporating shuttle transportation can be a key feature as well as an asset to generating more revenue not only for Belle Isle Park but the city of Detroit as well. These features will not only enhance the revenue and the look of Belle Isle Park but generate employment opportunities within the city and what the park and city have to offer. The option of the shuttle will come with information, attained upon registration, on which locations the shuttle transporters will be picking up groups to take to the park. In addition to offering shuttle services to Belle Isle and from allocated locations, special services of transportation to registered residence with disabilities and senior citizens will also be available. 7. What type of activities would you participate in at Belle Isle' With the City of Detroit struggling with its budget woes, and fighting the Governor of the State of Michigan about a possible takeover of the City’s assets, are including Belle Isle. The City needs to consider more investment into income streams that already exist or new ones for Belle Isle. Belle Isle offers, such destination points on the Island such as the Detroit Yacht Club, and The Belle Isle Casino, both of which could be use more for Weddings, Reunions, Private functions, and Business Meetings. The Island already has the landscape for a Formula One Race Track, and the roads could be upgraded to attract more Formula One Indy Car and other Car races as well. With both a football field and softball fields already located on the Island, Belle Isle could become home to renewed location for semi-pro football teams and softball team’s league and championship play as well. With nature trails already in existence, the city could upgrade the picnic areas with more sheltered areas for seating and outside cooking. The City could also add an outside amphitheater with vendor and seating locations for a weekly concert series, which could become a draw annually to the Isle for citizens all around the metro area. There is the Aquarium and a 9-hole golf course, all of which could use upgrades and would become renewed attraction and destination points for the Island’s revenue stream. The City could also consider placing a Drive-In Movie Theatre on the Isle as an additional draw while charging a small fee for entrance. Using the Ford/Wyoming theatre as a model of success, this idea could offer an additional income option. Regarding other new ideas for grow and development for the Island, there is the thought of adding residential living such as houses and condo’s on the Island, along with adding Casino’s and entertainment venues such as restaurants and night clubs. These additional projects will generate an enormous amount of steady income stream for the City of Detroit in tax revenue. Conclusion The information that Team B collects from the surveys will allow them to make better decisions that will benefit the city and the residents. The survey results will expand on the ideas of Team B and develop a new direction for Belle Isle. Enhancements such as a concert venue, transportation, and a police presence could produce the increase of attendance and revenue that Detroit needs to bring Belle Isle back to its glory.
